I dunno how much to trust your opinion after having implied you think R2 is better than R4...

 

Trying to decide between Viktor Frankenstein and The Night Before but I'm feeling like my money is going to poorly spent either way, considering the movies that are coming out next month.

 

Good news for all those worried about Leo while he was filming 'The Revenant'.

 

Go watch Creed or Hunger Games and don't put money down on a Max Landis script.

 

I know I'm like a billion months late to the party, but I finally got to see Spectre a few days ago.

On one hand, it felt a bit less impactful, more forgettable than the other films (Quantum excluded, the fuck was that even about?). The villain's claim to have orchestrated all of Bond's misfortune so far is stretching credibility a bit too much even for a Bond film. Even if I accept his claim, that undermines all of Bond's accomplishments so far. I also had very mixed feelings (though mostly negative) about the fact that apparently Bond retired. It felt nice from a storytelling perspective. It was a good, deserved end to Craig's character, but it didn't feel very much like Bond.
As for Spectre, for such a supposedly elite and all-powerful shadow group that everyone spent the first half of the movie warning Bond away from, they sure went down easy. I think it only took a single bullet on a gas tank to make the whole operation go sky high. A bit disappointing, but the Bond vs All feeling has been much missed during Craig's tenure, and I was glad to see it back.

In a similar way, it's probably the movie I enjoyed best. The action was up several notches from Casino and Quantum's muted, semi-realistic action scenes and while Skyfall came close, Spectre felt like a true Bond movie, in action as well as the scale of its plot.

No small amount of issues, to be sure, but I enjoyed watching it. Perhaps, though, the final movie wasn't the best place to so drastically change the tone?

 

I can't help feeling it was deliberate.

at one point he goes to the bad guy's lair, where he pets a white cat and is tortured by a device that slowly advances on him while he's bound and mostly helpless.

At that point I was like 'Oh, they're clearly taking the piss.' lol
