I watched the trailer about half a dozen times and realised what's bothering me about it. The humour. Not only is it not that funny, but it's so forced. The characters seem to be combative with each other, whereas in the original you could tell they were friends, complementing each other.

I mean, could you imagine Murray or Aykroyd thinking that slap scene was funny?

Too much comedy. The original wasn't a comedy, it just had actors great at comedic improv - and that's why it worked. Which, now that I think about it, may be impossible to recreate.

Seriously though, kinda with the crowd here. It's just... not that funny. I'll probably keep my hopes up a bit since Kate McKinnon has the uncanny ability to make me laugh for like, no reason. But yeah, definitely underwhelming. I thought the soft piano theme at the beginning was neat - evoking nostalgia without being in your face - but the characters just, meh.

 

I am not looking forward to the new Ghostbusters. Although I understand that studios want to make money and choosing to make a sequel means the movie has already been vetted in a sense, it will likely tarnish my memories of the originals.

 

I knew this would be awful from the get-go. On top of being a completely uninspired rehash of the original plot, none of these women are even remotely funny.

Also, only three of the original crew were scientists, damn it.

So, two things happened recently regarding the new Ghostbusters.

One: known feminist website TheMarySue started complaining that not all Ghostbusters are scientists (even though it was like that in the original movies too).



BUT THEN, the actress playing the non-scientist Ghostbuster actually responded, defending the choice of not making her a scientist.



I gotta say, I was not going to see this movie at the theater (and I still won't), but now I think I will at least rent it when it comes out on dvd.

Keanu Reeves is apparently training for the next John Wick film.

 

I know that nearly everything in cinema is scripted, but it doesn't have to feel like it is. A good film should make you forget you're watching a bunch of rich people pretending to be something, but instead should feel like watching through a window (missing some of the creepier connotations). On top of that, a trailer is nearly always designed to showcase the best of the film, to get it rattling around inside your head.

A lot of the Ghostbusters trailer seems instead like they're trying for memetic marketing - "the POWER of PATTY COMPELS YOU!", for example. If Patty is a religious person, why would she invoke her own name here? If she's not religious, she'd either use the line as a quote from a film, or not at all; she wouldn't actually be invoking Christ, but wise-cracking to keep sane. Ish.

I'm not going to pay to go and see it. If someone else pays to take me, I won't refuse the ticket, but I'm not going off my own back.

RE:John Wick 2, I'm excited. I only caught the first one last weekend as it was on Sky, and one of the guys in my DnD group was raving about it. But it was a brilliant film, mostly because it was so daft. I hope they don't lose it for the second film.
I mean, is the Triad going to kill his goldfish or something?

Speaking of daft films: Hardcore Henry. All shot in first person, this looks like it'll be either a massive trendsetter or an incredible flop. Given that there was a three way bidding war between studios over who got distribution (?) rights to it, I think it might well be the first.

Meh. I refrain from premptively judging Ghostbusters. It wasn't a great trailer, no, but it could end up surprising me.

The thing I'm afraid of most is that it will end up being just another cringe humor Feig movie. I fucking hate cringe humor and gender has nothing to do with it. Borat, Bridesmaids, American Pie, just different sides of the same shit coin.

 

Trailer was eh. Didn't thrill me at all, but it didn't inspire the anger or disgust it has in others.
Xandrel: I think you've misinterpreted that Mary Sue article a little. It's not complaining that there's a non-scientist character in the film; it's pointing out the Unfortunate Implications of the one character (apparently) not in possession of a PhD being the only non-white character.

 

Well it was like that in the original: Winston was just a guy who looked for a job and the Ghostbusters hired him.

So what if he's black? It'd be worse if it was an all-white team.

 

If you think that's bad hop on to Cracked, they already have multiple articles up about how the only reason you could dislike the trailer is that it has female stars and we're all sexist.

 

Oh, I know all about the shitfest that is Cracked.

Just to clarify, I'm not saying I agree, necessarily (I can see the point they're making, but I suspect this is a classic over-reaction), I'm simply trying to clarify your original post, which suggests that the Mary Sue's issue is a character who isn't a scientist, when they're actually questioning the specific character who isn't a scientist.

 

I'm still willing to stick it out for the rare gems it spits out, basically anything Seanbaby, Brockway or Bucholz write. I used to include Luke Mckinney on the list but over the past couple of years he's produced a mountain of breathtakingly condescending articles about sexism that have just completely turned me off his writing. The only funny part about them are the mountain of actual feminists in the comments section begging him to shut the fuck up and stop making them look bad.
