Use of Flitwick?

I was just wondering what you lot thought of using Flitwick as a relatively round character in fics? Or, for that matter, any other interesting looking but flat character in canon?

I have seen Flitwick used in fics, but he has never really passed "smart short dude" status. I think I would find a Harry Flitwick story interesting. Harry has been put with Snape as an adoptive parent (*shudders*), with McGonagall, I've even seen him with Moody as an adoptive parent, but I don't see him with many flat characters.

Your opinions? Yes or no to use of Flitwick?

It's been done before, multiple times. Most of the times the "dueling champion" reference in canon is used, by the way. A Clock in the Face of Hell is a good example for a Harry/Flitwick relationship.

I can give you other titles, but this is the best fic where Flitwick is a main character - though he is prominent, as mentioned, in many other good fics.

I've written a fic where Flitwick grooms Hermione and then kinda sorta date-rapes her. It was great fun to write, and I got major lulz out of it. Will definitely use him in the future.

Post it. Or a link. And do it now. :awesome

On topic: Flitwick is almost a blank slate in canon, save for a number of eccentricities and interesting characteristics. There are hundreds of ways to use him well, and he's very, VERY underused. Go for it.

    This:

    The Point
Filius Flitwick has had his fill of giving the same "Wingardium Leviosa" speech every year. When he left The Dueling Circuit, he did so to teach, not to instruct. He finds someone to pass his knowledge of magic to in Harry Potter.

    Need I say more?

Hopefully more interest will provoke Calz into ACTUALLY UPDATING YOU WHORE.

I have to agree; Flitwick is a sorely underused character with excellent potential.

It's hard to think of many others one could use in the same capacity - I've seen a few things done with Sprout, all utter shit; writers tend to focus too heavily on aspects that make her very one-dimensional, such as being obsessed with plants or being kind. (or strict for that matter) What might work well is a reversal of those commonly-applied traits.

Trelawny has also had a bit of mileage in fanfiction, such as in one of Jbern's stories - again, she's always been shit. Especially in her characterisation by Jbern. I can picture her working well in a story where it's revealed, just as everything hinges on her pulling through for them, that the prophecy was completely made up - and in reality, Trelawny is a conniving bitch who has faked every aspect of her abilities. That might seem the obvious route to go down, but it has definite story potential.

But you know who I'd like to see done well in a story? Filch.

Sure; he's been done before. But I don't want to see all of that 'BAAWWW I'M A SQUIB' angsty fuckery. I'd love to see an intelligent, jaded man overcome his crippling magical ability and contribute something worthwhile to a storyline.

That would be awesome, and I don't think I've ever seen that before. Still, it's plausible; after all, he's dealt with both the Marauders (was he there for them?) and the Weasley twins, plus he has to have an incredible array of trinkets he's confiscated over the years, so he's got to have some tricks up his sleeve.

If I remember correctly, Flitwick was an important character in the Unsung Hero series, though we all know how that went from a fic that promised to be one of the best to something nearly as bad as A second chance at life.

I think The Santi is developing a rather nice Flitwick character in The Boy Who Lived, though he isnt a main personality.

    Ahem.

What is this story you speak of, and how did my name come to be on it, I must ask.

/hides the multitude of pages of this particular story, and especially Flitwick training Harry that has been on his hard drive for months on end, buried just below Sanya II and above the conclusion of Ambient.

On topic - I think a lot of people shy away from Flitwick because of the canon issues he has, physically, as a character. I mean, when people go out of their way to have Harry jog over the summer and suddenly be 6'5 with Michael Phelps' body, and suddenly not need glasses anymore and have perfect hair, do you really think they want to write anything about a character that they can't find a way to make normal?

There's no way to make Filius a suave, debonair model-type guy who wrecks everyone's shit on the circuit in the morning and fucks their bitches at night like some kind of magical James Bond. Well... let me correct that. There's no way to convince any fic authors to do it in any kind of way where he remains the same character. It was something I planned to write a short for and started a long long time ago, that maybe will be unearthed. But that's the issue. Most fic authors don't want to write about someone with an problem that makes them, from the jump, "less than." They'd rather just make OCs that come from a dueling background and exist in plot specifically to train Harry. If people looked at it the right way though, they'd see it as a challenge.

Give me a day to think about this, and I may take up the mantle once more, specifically because it needs to be done. For Glory! For Honor! For righteousness! For Filius Motherfucker Flitwick!

tl;dr: All you people with OCs made to train Harry in Dueling: Step your game up, son.

The story being discussed here, The Point, is quite good so far actually.

I actually like Flitwick stories. There is enough there to give background and character information but little enough to twist it however you want.

Was Flitwick such a champion dueller because he had to prove to all the people who made fun of him that he has better? Was he simply a natural who laughed his way through it? Goblin ancestry give him a significant edge? Came from a family of duellers who expected it from him but he got out of it ASAP? And so on -- there are any number of ways to twist it.

And since we rarely see Flitwick when he isn't being jovial it means that when writing his more serious side authors have some leeway in how they want to portray him.

I think he's a great character. There's tons of potential there that has been left mostly untapped. I'd love to see something where Flitwick takes on a mentor-type role with Harry early on, in first year perhaps, and where it could go from there.

If I wasn't convinced that I couldn't do the idea justice I might try it myself.

The Point is interesting so far. I'd love to see it continued.

My story is here. Flitwick actually makes an appearance only at the end, although it's a memorable one.

Fitwick? Sprout? Filch? You guys are thinking too small! There's one professor who is the absolute boss.

That's right: Professor Cuthbert Binns. Hell yeah, motherfucker.

You mean Cuthbert "Goblinslayer" Binns? Veteran of Goblin Rebellion? The guy who singlehanded took out a whole legion in the Battle of Hogsmeade Village? Yes, he is quite a badass. ;)

I have to disagree. Ron will never ever beat Flitwick. Period. The story's bullshit in my opinion. I skipped most of it due to it being lame.
