Vampires portrayed by Joss Whedon, as long as they have their protective blankie to shield them from the sun they can operate in the day.

If any of you know the system of Vampire The Masquerade by White Wolf I think that is as close to a really thought out system for vampires around.

I prefer to stick with the Anne Rice vampires... Sunlight or fire can kill them. Otherwise, they only get stronger with age. The Elders, or thousands-year-old vampires, have developed to the point where they can have fairly strong telekinetic powers. On the other hand, blood is also important- the older their bloodline (meaning untainted- a vampire must bequeath their blood into a pratically drained human to turn another. Therefore, the more you turn people, the less powerful your blood becomes) This is why, Lestat, after drinking Akasha (the original vampire)'s blood, he goes day-walker for a short time.

But, I agree, the partying nightlife style of living doesn't suit vampires on a day-by-day basis. Maybe the occasional visit, but... no, doesn't work.

I think that the 'vampires with magic' thing is just a way for authors to give the 'magic' feel into the HP fanfic. I mean, seriously, if Harry can't use magic, what's the point of writing the flipping story!? It's about a young wizard boy who happens to be the saviour of the world when he's not a complete fucking pansy! He's EXPECTED to have magical powuhz.

Just go read Anne Rice's Vampire Chronicles... preferably The Interview with the Vampire and The Vampire Lestat, as those are the two books that establish the main characters and have the most explanations. Besides, TVL is sorta my favorite of the series anyhow.

Next question- the whole garlic thing. What's up with that? I honestly can't remember if that started with the whold Dracula thing or bleh.

Yeah, Bram's Dracula uses Garlic flowers - though his Vampires are also part Werewolf so...

Overall I think the problem is that vampires and Snape are too closely connected. Even if they manage to avoid Slash, it usually ends up being a Snape sires Harry or Snape's daughter and Harry get together. And then you are just asking for a redeemed nice Snape. The only non-Snape related vampire fic I have read ended up being H/G.

Anne Rice has created a new vampire myth. A lot of people now think of her vampires when they imagine how vampires would be, but every society has a different vampire myth. The Greeks believed that people with red hair and blue eyes were vampires. Eastern european vampires were shambling goons a lot of the time. The Dracula type of vampire is purely from Bram Stokers imagination, a hodge podge of different vampire lore mixed into one character.

And vampireHarry sucks. I've yet to read a good vampireHarry story.

I read a good vamp!harry that was pretty close to Bram's. Though it was H/H which you probably won't like but I thought it was good anyways. He was turned by some ancient vampire and then he started tormenting Hermione making her crazy by whispering in her ear and when she turned around he wasn't there. He soon gets found out and Dumbledore traps him in some sort of box. He starts slamming himself against the walls at super speed trying to find a weakness, while McGonnagal rants that Dumbledore's spells are perfect. When he hits the floor he notices something and begins rapping on the stone floor. McGonnagal and Dumbledore stare wondering what he's doing, then sigh when he starts to do the same thing over again, they then notice he's flying head first into the stone floor but right before he hits he turns into mist. Air was still seeping through the cracks. It was all pretty cool. I'll check if I saved it on my HD.

I think Vampires are normal people with different metabolisms, kind of like diabetics. Attitude-wise, that is. As to the powers? I say make it like wizard magic, that is to say, make it do whatever you want/need it to do at the time. As long as it makes sense in the fic, go nuts. If werewolves can still do magic then why can't vampires, if you want them to. This is all from a fictional/theoretical point of view though. I personally also avoid vamp!harry fics, because, like draco, vampires attract rabid slash fangirls who write to try and fulfill their own pitiful fantasies/delusions.

I've read like 3 good Vamp!harry fics. One of them is in the romance section, the name was complicated I can't remember it. The best one I've read was the one I talked about before.

Britain may be a good option for vampires, as there is a large concentration of people on one small island, whereas a country like russia has people more spread out, Britain allows Vamps to move easily to large concentraitions, picking off their pray, and then moving on without picking up suspicion
