Great update; I posted over there as well, but the author actually made the power of love, or at least human understanding and kindness work in a horror/sci-fi setting which is quite impressive. Very glad this part didn't drag out like the current Spiderman arc has.

I'm still not sure why I'm keeping up to date with this honestly. This interlude worked alright but I'm just sort of...fatigued I guess. MJ is brilliant as usual but, I'm going to disagree with Mutton a bit here, I didn't really like the whole kiss thing. I get that the point is how Peter's willing to do pretty much anything to keep her safe...but I was kind of hoping to have him pull through force of personalit(ies).

I'm also still not seeing how this is going to end. Peter takes down Jessica. Eliminates Hydra, to whatever extent that's possible. Then he...what fades into the background? I'm just interested in seeing what the aftermath is going to be like at this point. I don't really doubt that Peter's going to take Jessica down. I'm just not sure exactly how it's going to happen.

Part of me wants Peter to discover he is the last living heir to the Russian royal family, so when he ends the threat of the virus, he will then attempt to restore his family rule over all of Russia.
All Hail Czar Peter Benjamin Parker Romanov. He could hire the surviving thunderbolts to act as his personal guard as he retakes his kingdom.

Kind of an interlude chapter, but just as high quality as the rest of the fic. Eagerly awaiting more.

My favorite ongoing fic, but author should either update more often or write longer chapters, because these constant endings just before the escalation are killing me.

I wasn't familiar with Prototype at all but still enjoyed it immensely. Peter is completely IC in it even as he wrestles with his new... appetites.

    Full marks for now.

This last chapter reached the whole new level of epicness.

No one's posted in this thread for awhile, but there's been a bunch of updates since 2013- here's the most recent one, chapter 70.

It's a really good fic, and easily one of my favorite currently updating stories... but it seems to be dragging on. It feels like we've been in the endgame since chapter 50~, and it just keeps going. Mind you, I like where it's been going. Every update since the Hank debacle has been good.

The most recent arc was fantastic, and I honestly thought that we'd finally hit story's end... and that was about three chapters ago. I really do think that this arc will be the last one, though. The story's almost 300K, but Scriviner just keeps on pumping updates out every few months or so.

    Latest chapter spoiler:

Norman nodded to Peter. "I can think of at least one person who could have had access to everything, but I couldn't imagine him being the one doing any of this."

It was Peter's turn to frown, then sigh as the man continued to grin at him. "Enough dramatic build up."

Norman opened his mouth to speak once more, but then Peter's phone rang.

    ...

I hope this isn't used for drama, as in Oh noes Norman is dead who was he talking about. That's just annoying. Especially given how Norman made a point of saying let's just get it out there.

I'm totally necro'ing here, but this is so worth it. NO SPOILER REVIEW AHEAD

This is one of the best goddamn stories I've ever read. It starts in a weird place, Spiderman/Prototype, you say, hopelessly confused. Yes, and it works beautifully.

It's such an out there mix that it comes back around to being epic. So, review time.

The writing and mechanics and jazz are fine, nothing to write home about, which is a good thing as far as I'm concerned.

The action is a nonstop rollercoaster of "Ohshitthesky'sfallingwatdo" and it's great. This story has such awesome energy and atmosphere that you can't put it down, and at over 300,000 words, it's plenty to not put down.

It takes the familiar story of Peter Parker and twists everything ever-so-slightly on its axis. It feels like I'm reading some Marvel Universe Else-Worlds thing, it's that good. The entire universe of Marvel is put through the twisted lens of Prototype and what comes out is a masterpiece. The way everything in the story seems familiar but also different is such a chilling feeling, the minute you think you understand what's going on, the world tilts again and you're back in free fall. Glorious.

The author, scriviner, does and excellent job in the characterization department. Peter, Gwen, MJ, Aunt May, the whole cast is done flawlessly. Everyone is, on the surface, the same as the general Marvel characters, but under the hood, we see how this different world shapes them differently. It's so subtle that you don't even notice the characters are different, until you go, 'Wait, wasn't Peter supposed to be a superhero or something, nah, I'm probably just crazy.' It's mind-bending in it's awesomeness.

I can't sing enough praises for this story, do yourself a favor and go read it.

Well, it updated. Kind of a short chapter, but im just glad to see it back from the dead. The chances of this thing finishing are pretty high considering how close to the end it is.

I noticed a distinct lack of proper proofreading for this chapter. Maybe the author's beta was out, or maybe he didn't want to spend as much time editing and just wanted it out there.

Well, it looks like the end is here- there'll probably be one more chapter wrapping everything up but otherwise the story has finally been finished.

The epilogue to this story has finally been posted. Scriviner has said there might be more epilogues/different povs, but considering this one took 5 years I wouldnt hold my breath lol.

I enjoyed the Epilogue. I think the original story holds up on its own, but it added a nice little addition.

if you haven’t checked this story out before, now is the perfect time. One of the best Spiderman fics out there.

Very sad update, but someone announced on another of Scriviner’s stories that he passed away this weekend after a long battle with cancer.

I think Variant Strain might be the seminal spiderman fanfic, and I really loved his most recent story (linked below) that he was updating up until last week. Really nice guy from our limited online interactions, and it’s sad to know he was struggling for so long.

    RIP, Scriviner
