Hi all!

I've been looking for some fics in which Harry is doing things out of sheer vengeance and hatred. Sort of like The Last Dinosaur's Roar (amazing fic, 11k words oneshot).

I'm looking for something a bit longer and drawn out (novel length+ preferable), but something that retains a dark, vengeful Harry who has been wronged in some way. The more AU the better!

 

Vengeance? I wish I could shamelessly self-advertise here, but alas, my fic is only 20k words in so far, no vengeance in sight yet...

 

Escape to Darkness (FanFiction.Net) has a darker Harry who is out for revenge. I don't know if it's anything like 'The Last Dinosaur's Roar' though, as I haven't read that story (yet).

Features Harry with VERY valid reasons to hate Dumbledore and . Though his needs of vengeance slowly turn into a desire to change the Wizardling world, it results in the carnage making Grindewald and Voldemort look like hopeless amateurs.

 

I barely made it a few hundred words in before hitting that x-button in disgust, Vulcan. Harpy!Hermione, Ron and the Weasleys are apparently bad people, whereas racist, cowardly scum like Malfoy are now forgiven?

Fuck that. The writing is technically sound, but other than that, it feels like any other really shitty indy!Harry fic.

 

Rise of the Wizards does one thing very well, and that's Harry and Dumbledore's relationship.

It begins as a fairly typical indy!Harry affair, but it's clear from the start that Harry's idea of Dumbledore has been tainted by anger and is not accurate. Over time, as sixth year progresses, they begin to reconcile and Harry comes to really regret his vow to Malfoy.

Then a believable miscommunication happens, completely undoing that reconciliation, and Harry does something irreversible. There's a great sense of loss in that sequence, a believable sense of how people clouded with emotion can make extremely bad decisions. Further, while we as the reader know this, Harry never learns of it and so holds onto that anger afterwards.

So bravo to the author for that.

Unfortunately the plot completely falls apart after sixth year is over, probably because the author no longer has the scaffolding of canon to build upon. The setting also becomes increasingly absurd, as does the politics/power dynamics.

 

Two major problem I had with RotW are:
1) it goes over the top after Harry's sixth year,
2) I find the idea that muggles can do anything to magicals so stupid it's not even funny. Sure, they may surprise one, but you can't surprise a whole nation, or the whole world - as is the case in this fic.

 

Betrayed has a vengeful Harry, and it's done pretty well. By Katydidnt or whatever she has her name as.
