Offering someone a ride on your magic carpet just took on a whole new meaning.

Especially if the person asked shows you her 'landing strip.'

    Eat that, Aladdin.

I don't think there is a way you can logically explain it. Maybe it's a new spell, maybe not.

J.K. didn't feel the need to explain it, so why do we need to figure out how he was flying?

Because this is a Harry Potter forum? With people really interested in the plot and its devices? With people who might even use the flying-thing in their own stories?

Err ... if you have the urge to ask this question, do you feel you are ok with us discussing anything Harry-Potterish? If not you should consider to look for something else than a Harry Potter related internet-board.

"Voldemort can fly without support, defying the law of magic that states only objects can fly through use of a flying charm. Voldemort first exhibits the ability to fly while in pursuit of Harry Potter over Little Whinging".

That's from Wikipedia. No proper source is given though. Is there really a Law stating that? Like it's theoretically impossible? Because if there is, we must ignore the possibility of hitherto undiscovered spells and move on to... you guessed it... the various supah powahs of Lord Anagram...

By the way, even though it may no longer be relevant, who is to say that somebody cannot merely 'coast' through the wards? Just stop the propelled motion, and let yourself blast through the warded barrier-area. You may start to drop, but just go damn fast before that...once past the no-fly zone, you can feel free to start your invasion.

Depends how we define flying charm, or whether it means self-charmed.
Mobilicorpus allows people to float, though examples we have seen has someone other than the floater casting the charm. Same goes for 'Accio Hagrid'.

Not flying charms per se, but for a period had the same effect.

Question: Could you cast the flying charms such as those on a broom on your boots? Seems like it'd makes things a lot simpler all around.

As you say, they only look like flying charms for a period. But to me, a true flying charm means maneuverability. Accio works in only one direction once the charm is cast. A broom, on the other hand, changes direction/speed in response to the touch.

On the boots? What about balance? Voldemort flies, sweeping down, then reaches forward to grab Harry and... loses his balance. :D That's funny.
Same for charmed robes, I think. A broom is solid. You can sit on a broom. Feeling you're being hoisted up in the air by your clothes won't be any sort of comfortable.

And would a broom feel any better beating you in the crotch? They have charms to make the broom comfortable, and I bet that could easily be applied to a vest or a tight full body type outfit under the robes. You put the same charms as you have on a broom on that and you have what Voldemort did in the books.

Of course, he most likely just somehow defied all magical laws because JKR, being the crack addict that she is, decided it would be cooler- just like pairing Firebush-sue with Harry and having Snape be a good guy.....

What I meant is that the broom is a solid big rod that can be used as a... sitting platform... whatever. I'd imagine something like a cushioning charm would do the job for a broom. How'd that work for clothes? The charm has to have a mechanism, you know. What works on a broom won't necessarily work on a wizard's robes.
