Hey, I was re-reading OoTP for the fic I'm writing and something came up that seemed really off considering the new info on wands we go from DH.

During the DA sessions they practiced stunning and disarming eachother. This seems to be quite the crappy idea if you look at it from a wand perspective. I remember Hermione losing her wand to Neville once and I'm sure Luna disarmed someone. Would that mean they can now use their wands just as effectively as their own?

No. They were practicing, they didn't have the intent.

Yeah, it's not so much about the disarming as it is about the act of defeating someone. If you're just practicing there's no defeat involved.

Ahh, that explains it. Cheers for clearing that up, seemed like a really large plot hole when I thought of it.

What about, say, classroom demonstrations, or the duelling club in second year? If people with a rivalry like Harry and Malfoy had actually used disarming spells in those circumstances then surely they'd have the intent necessary to win the wands?

Classroom demonstations I'm doubtful of, since it's a controlled situation, but yes, I should imagine duelling competition would count as a defeat.

    Snape vs. Lockhart, anyone?

    Right.

So I say we can all officially call bullshit on and disregard the concept of wand ownership presented in DH.

    At least for fanfiction.

I don't think so. I'm thinking that the wand would only change allegiances in a dire situation. That schoolboy fight was hardy dire, compared to like the fights you see in Hallows.

What I want to know is what happens when you win a wand, but it gets back into the hands of its former owner. You know like the fight at the end of OOTP. Like what if Mad Eye had lost his wand to Lucius, but Lucius ended up dropping it trying to escape?

Or at least the magic does.

Or it could reek of bullshit; you know, one of the two. :?: I'm so torn.

If it's the action of defeating someone, then what of the scene in HBP in which Draco and Harry fight and Harry defeats Draco with Sectumsempra? According to what I understood, Malfoy's wand oughtn't work properly from that point on, but this does not seem to be the case.

So I think that all that wand-ownership stuff was just one JKR's many plot devices that are used for steering one particular situation into the direction that Rowling wants it to go, without properly thinking about whether this contradicts something else in the story.

She made the wand-owning bullshit up post-OOtP, hence fucking this sort of stuff up.

Remember guys, this is why you plan your stories out before you start writing. What is this, amateur hour?;)
