    I always thought it was used more as a focal point, so you could put more power into the spells, using the cores as the focal point. Voldemort/Dumbledore both used wands, so it doesn't sound right that his parents could do wandless magic.

    Well, maybe it was more of a training wand? You know, like to get them used to casting magic, and then getting a more powerful wand so that they can cast harder spells.
