I'ma post this as a challenge when I've got it all fleshed out.

    Basic premise: Fallout Crossover

Main Idea: Harry attempts to kill Voldemort just prior to his seventh year. He isn't ready. Voldemort easily defeats him, and in a moment of caution, decapitates Harry rather than using the Killing Curse. Harry is killed, but in the normal cluster-fuck, Fate decides Voldemort's been cheating. It decides to reincarnate Harry in the future to destroy the bastard Riddle. However, before Harry is reborn, Voldemort begins his attack on the Muggle world. The war goes poorly for the Muggles, and desperate world leaders decide to take the Wizards with them to Hell. They fire nuclear missiles at every lost area, and every contested area, and in the end at the entire Earth. The few survivors eke out a horrible living on the irradiated and ruined planet. Mutated creatures prowl the wastelands, and toxic radiation infests much of the food and water supplies. However, Voldemort has survived. He dwells in his ruined citadel, eternally bound by his Horcruxes to the blackened halls. The remains of government hide beneath the surface in specially constructed Vaults. They act as self-contained worlds for the dwellers. In one of these Vaults, Harry Potter is reborn.

That's all I have right now. Any suggestions, or ideas?

    Fate is a bitch.

She doesn't want anything to do with us mortals.

In fact, she goes out of her way to make sure she is not involved in mortal affairs.

Often you'd find her propositioning Death and Time and Destiny to ensure that they too, do not meddle with the affairs of mortals.

    _=_

That kinda sums up my thoughts about Fate.

Try another plot device to archive what Fate does. :)

    Other than that,

    ...

As of yet, there has been little to nil connon evidence that VoldieShorts had much presence on the international stage. For what you are suggesting, US needs to agree.

So, meh. Not that interesting to me.

I've had a similar idea a while back.

    Problems with this one:

    1) Time-frame. This would happen 7-8 years after the Cold War is over. A single nuclear detonation wouldn't cause a chain reaction.

    2) Fate steps in? Come on, you can do better than that. Harry drinks a draught of living dead, gets petrified, goes into hiding, gets frozen in fucking carbonite. Anything but fate steps in and fixes everything up.

Well, the problem is I need to get him into a Vault. I like the frozen idea... Maybe he's damaged to the point of requiring magical stasis?

And FB: We're talking a looooooooooong time. Long enough for Voldie to become an international problem. Well, that applies to IP too. The nukes could come fifty years after Harry is stasis-ified.

Basically, a crossover with Fallout and Harry Potter? It does set the backdrop, but what actually happens when Harry is reborn? Does Voldemort have a body, or is it vaporized in the attack? I assume there are few to none wizards/witches remaining?

I also suggest a fanatic cult devoted to Voldemort, and possibly a rival cult that firmly believes in Harry's rebirth.

The entire Muggle world's desperation thing is kind of off-putting. I'd like to see some Voldemort going all out, wiping out his magical resistance, so that that his ability to defeat billions of Muggles is vindicated.

Stasis...how will he get out of it? Why hasn't it been done before?

If you want to be really inventive, and plausible, try thinking about using some Muggle technique along with magic to archive a Stasis. That would take care of why it hadn't been used before.

Now comes...Why? He doesn't gain anything from the stasis... Voldie becomes more powerful and the world deteriorates into chaos. Why would Harry want to be in stasis and effectively fast forward decades and awaken to a bleaker battlefield?

Concerning Voldemort as an internation problem:

Taking into account the speed and ease with which Voldemort took over the British Ministry, and the fact that after doing so he will have even more resources to use, it wouldn't take long to become an international problem. Just a few well-placed imperius curses is all it takes really.

Andro: Excellent idea. Voldemort remains sans body, but is able to use a cult of followers who believe he is a god to wreak havoc on the devastated world. No group for Harry, though. Harry wants to kill Voldie more than ever, but first must locate him.

FB: The stasis idea is mainly that: an idea. But I very much doubt that he would have a choice of being put in stasis. How about this: Instead of dying, Harry is crippled by Voldemort. He enters a coma, and is simply kept alive by the Order. After, say, a decade, he is captured by Muggles, wo turn him over to one of the agencies created to combat wizards. They place him in a cryogenic freezer deep in the bowels of the facility that would become the vault. Maybe 30 years after the destruction, he is located by some more humanitarian Vault-dwellers, and is restored by futuristic medicine. After all, science would advance in fifty years.:D After his body is restored, his magic kick-starts his mind.

Details be damned; if Harry gets the Chaingun from Fallout this story = teh win.

    /end pointless post

    Edit:

Okay, on a helpful note: this fic could end up well, but the details around how the world went from Harry vs. Voldemort to Nuke vs. Voldemort would have to be very solid. Plot holes in the backstory for a fic like this could kill it before it ever got off the ground.

The idea of the muggles capturing Harry and sticking him in status comes the closest to working. Keep fleshing things out and you'll get there.
