These threads tend to be absolute hell for me as a music critic... but, what the hell:

'Mesmerize' by Temples - psychedelic rock
'Gitanjali' by Cynic - prog metal/jazz fusion
'Turn Away' by Beck - alternative rock
'Hell Of A Night' by Schoolboy Q - gangsta rap
'Home' by American Authors - pop rock
'Bring Me All Your Loves' by St. Vincent - baroque pop (although seriously, it's been the entire album, with a focus on 'Psychopath' and 'Severed Crossed Fingers')
'These Days' by Sundy Best - country
'Interference Fits' by Perfect Pussy - lo-fi punk (I'm not kidding when I say it's lo-fi and abrasive)
'Red Eyes' by The War On Drugs - indie rock (although seriously, just listen to the entire album, it's fucking wonderful)
'Shame' by Freddie Gibbs & Madlib - hip-hop (although, once again, listen to the whole album, best hip-hop album of the year thus far)
'Oklahoma Lottery' by Karen Jonas - country
'Die & Rise' by Lacuna Coil - goth metal
'Feel What I Feel' by Gotthard - hard rock (although, once again, the whole album is fucking awesome)
'All Must Die' by The Oath - heavy metal
'Broken Again' by Pharoahe Monch - hip-hop
'Change Your Life' by Iggy Azalea ft. T.I. - hip-hop
'Canal' by Ratking - alternative hip-hop
'These Streets' by Frankmusik - synthpop
'Roundtable Rival' by Lindsey Stirling - classical dubstep fusion
'Gunshot' by Lykke Li - indie pop (although, once again, the whole album is phenomenal)

so many recommendations, i'll try them out one at a time

    right now i'm listening to
witchcraft by pendulum which would come under alternative rock/drum and bass and i would highly recommend. it probably comes under one of my all time favorites.

another one which i've been listening to a fair bit is
houdini by foster the people which would be indie i guess. again it's a definite would recommend

A friend introduced me to Girl Talk today, which was surprisingly good.

I've been listening to some older Jay-Z stuff; 22 Twos, Feelin' It and basically the entire Black Album.

Also Dvorak's 9th symphony since that's what I'm supposed to be learning right now, even if I'm too lazy to actually practice.

Anything with Kendrick Lamar in it. Particularly Backseat Freestyle http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EZW7et3tPuQ

Although, as a I just found out, I See Fire is a great song for when writing papers and studying.

Just listened to the brand new Epica album (out this week). It was pretty sweet. I'm too lazy to bump the metal thread, but it's defenitly worth a listen. The first few songs are quite heavy, and there's a sequel to Kingdom of Heaven.

I mostly consume music by the album, will link highlight tracks and name albums.

Swans - Soundtracks for the Blind ( highlight track: The Sound) post-rock-like, takes a bit of effort to get in to
Hop Along - Get Disowned ( highlight track: Tibetan Pop Stars) indie rock, female vocalist, accessible
DJ Shadow - Endtroducing.. ( highlight track:The Number Song) mostly instrumental hip-hop, consists almost completely of samples, very accessible and fun album
Young Fathers - Tape One ( highlight track: Deadline) British hip hop, tribal vibe, very soulful at moments
Joanna Newsom - Have One on Me ( highlight track: Jackrabbits)
folk, very pretty voice, harps and pianos featured
    King Krule - Rock Bottom
    English indie rock, jazzy
Spiritualized - Ladies And Gentlemen We Are Floating In Space ( highlight track: Ladies And Gentlemen We Are Floating In Space )
    space-rock
The Knife - The Knife ( highlight track: Kino ) synth-pop
Reno Dakota - Popularity ( highlight track: The Fine Art Of Small Talk) math-rock
Kapitan Korsakov - Stuff and Such ( highlight track: Cancer)
    noise-rock
    DFA 1979 - You're A Woman, I'm A Machine ( highlight track: Black History Month)
dance-punk, only a drummer and a bassist who occasionally plays synths
Mount Eerie - No Flashlight: Songs of the Fulfilled Night ( highlight track: I Hold Nothing)
    noisy indie rock
Drudkh - Eternal Turn Of The Wheel ( highlight track: When Gods Leave Their Emerald Halls) black metal

Pretty hyped for the new Swans album, 'To Be Kind' coming May 12. Any albums/singles you guys are looking forward to?

QFT, I went to a concert of his when he came down to Sydney and he played most of GKMC. He's really good live as well, was not disappointed.

As for what I've been listening to lately:
Mike Posner- Delta 1406, Smoke & Drive
T.I- Trap Back Jumpin, The Way We Ride
    Ritz-Switch Lanes
Kendrick Lamar - The Recipe, Detox This
The Weeknd- High for This, Coming Down
Big Sean- It's Time, Switch Up
    Nelly ft T.I- IDGAF
Machine Gun Kelly- Breaking News, Street Dreams
2Pac- 2 of Amerikaz Most Wanted, Ambitionz Az A Ridah, Thug Style
    ASAP Rocky- Long Live ASAP
Zedd- Follow You Down (Keys n Krates Remix)
Drake- The Motion, Come Thru, Uptown, Say What's Real
    Fabolous - Foreigners

No hyperlinks since I'm typing this on my phone, but YouTube should have all of them nonetheless.

Itsbynne Reel, composed by Michael Brecker, arranged by Chuck Owen. It's, er, sort of an Irish Jig/Progressive Jazz fusion, and it's bonkers. We're playing it in my big band - I'm the screamer - and it has the distinction of being one of the hardest pieces I've ever tried to play.

Word of warning: it's a mite long (11 mins, not too bad), and you might struggle to like it the first time round. It's very cool, though and certainly pushes... some kind of boundaries.

"All of the Above" by Transatlantic. Love me some half hour prog epics by two of my favourite musicians (Mike Portnoy and Neal Morse) :D

You lucky ox, had/have the opportunity to see NMH at a festival later this year, but unfortunately my exams are just a bit too close for comfort, so I'll have to miss their reunion tour.
