    I think I'll give it a go too, just for kicks. Probably have to be a oneshot though, since I'm terrible at keeping interested in a fic.

    I am likely to submit something too. I have an idea for a longish one-shot that I've wanted to write for a while. I'll probably submit that.

    It's unfortunate that the deadline is so short; I won't be participating (too many demands on my time in January).

    Yeah, annoying how close the damned deadline is. Hoped they'd do a quarterly thing or something. Just going to submit as much as I can.

    Damn, only sixteen days? :(

    Fuck. No chance we could push the deadline into February a bit?

    I don't know if I'll make it or not, but I'll try anyway. Probably end up being a three-part one-shot just so I can get something submitted. Hate doing things on the fly, but if this is the only chance I'll get at this genre....

    I'm not much of a romance or humor writer - I'd get my ass kicked a thousand times over in most of the other Library categories.

    Meh, I've already put in that request on the other thread. Hopefully there's some sort of clemency. I'm fairly certain I won't win, but 'm worried about submissions. The aim of this is to get people writing again. The more who can't handle the deadlines and so jump into judging, the less new fics we'll see.

    Exactly. It would be a much better idea if we did the contest in February. That would leave people with sixteen days to plan and a month to write. The Mods would have the time to draw up a schedule, organize entries, etc.

    Be better all around really.

    Or you can use January for what it is; a trial run, and put more effort into next month.

    I think people are more concerned about Dark Arts (as a category) being wasted.

    Alrighty then and fair enough. Competition will be fun anyway, no doubt, and everyone is grateful to you guys for putting it together.

    * * *

    So, back on topic, this still leaves us with the problem of;

    ...as in, a lack of new, decent Dark Arts fics; the necessity of a reinvigoration of the genre and to a lesser extent the fandom; the want for more overall interest and quantity in the writing of these fics; the responsibility to live up to the DLP name by delivering a better quality - a competitive quality, if you will - within said new Dark Arts fanfic; a board-wide effort to achieve this slew of new writing and to achieve bringing people like Pers back from original fiction... etc.

    Yeah, I hear that. This won't be the last time we do Dark Arts and I think you'll like the next few [We don't know the order yet, but I would bet safely on Indy, Alternates and maybe General (mish-mash of all categories) and Humor followed by another run of Dark Arts].

    I'm obviously really interested in getting more Dark Arts fics going, but I'm most concerned with making the competition structured in a sustainable way, such that the staff can actually get it handled month in-month out and still provide a fair platform for people to earn some major bragging rights. There is a large caliber of competition around here, so if someone relatively unknown sweeps a main category like Dark Arts it says a lot about their promise as an author.

    Are we allowed to use ideas from the plot bunny thread?

    Yup. So long as the writing is your own.

    And credit (eg, a line saying "Original Idea by <Name> on Dark Lord Potter.net") in an author's note?

    I don't think one is allowed to lift ideas from the plot bunny thread without at first seeking the permission of the poster. Plot bunny is meant for seeking critique and thoughts on one's story ideas. Unless the poster specifies that anyone can write them, I don't think that you are allowed to use them as long as the idea is not generic.

    Exactly this. It also helps to limit the doubling of ideas. I have permission from the original poster for one I elaborated on.

    Plain courtesy, even if it wasn't theft.

    What does "general" mean in this context? Does it mean a fic that can be anything you want genre you want? Or does it mean something that just doesn't fit in any other category?

    What happened to the Award Submission section? It's February, and I have the first chapter of my Dark Arts story complete.
