What is wrong with my iTunes?

DLP, I call upon your considerable technical expertise.

When I tried to sync my iPod today I got a pop-up telling me: itunes was not installed properly, please reinstall itunes (Error 7 Windows error 999). So I did, I uninstalled itunes and quicktime and bonjour and all the other apple-crap that was installed on my computer, I even cleared it off the registry (I think, my expertise is not all that). When I re-installed I got the same message. So I googled it, and found out there's apparently a browser plug-in(itunes application detector) that can cause this, but I don't have it on my computer anyway. I also tried updating my .Net framework, to no avail. Apparently the Data Execution Prevention security feature is what's preventing me from opening the program, and it won't let me turn it off for itunes.

I'd appreciate help if anyone knows what's going on here. I'd also welcome recommendations for different programs. I know iTunes is not great, it was just convenient. I tried Songbird (the only other program I know) but it won't sync my iPod.

Probably relevant: I have Vista and an 80 gig video iPod. 70 gigs of which is full of music. I need my iPod.

That's what I use for my iPod classic. Just download the file, put in on your iPod's HDD and add songs from any computer you're connected to.

Hmm, that works. Kind of. When I tried to add a file robocopy kept failing, every couple of seconds. I'm not sure what to make of that. It did eventually get done. Thanks for the suggestion, I apparently need to figure out whatever is going on with my laptop. It's nice to have a workable solution in the meantime.
