Same here Nuke, I thought it was so epic at the time... even if the angst level was skyhigh. I remember re-reading it as well... and skipping lots of parts due to all the angst. I don't think I could possibly re-read it now. Empath!Ginny.. Dragonriding!Harry... and the angst...

I think as firsts go, you could go way worse tho.

Some Kingdom Hearts fic, before the second game came out. I don't remember much about it. But I started watching the Justice League cartoon a little while later and remembered the site it was on. I started looking up fanfiction for that (didn't find much, by the way). Then I got into Harry Potter, Teen Titans and Star Wars fanfiction, and... here I am.

I think it was Genesis, a digimon fic, written by logan. It was an interesting start and well it was better than season 2 so it got me to look into fanfiction more and I eventually made my way here.

Like JWH, my first fanfic ever was Naruto. If I'm correct it was Chunin Exam Day, and I've recently gone back and checked up on it to find it's still going strong.

My first Harry Potter fanfic was Oh God Not Again!

    Yeah...

First fic I remember reading was a kill!fic pokemon story when I was about 14. It scarred me for life. I can still vividly recall a scene where Togepi got killed by some knives being dropped on it from above while the heroes tried to save it. I often wonder whether this has had an effect on my current personality :p.

First Harry Potter fanfic was some crappy H/Hr romance fic over at mugglenet. Before I found here.

Harry Potter and the Attack of the Clones was the first I actually read after a few false starts with shitty self-inserts.

For those who read my intro, you know of the fail that was my first fanfic experience. It only spurred me to find better stuff.

First good thing I read: Of Ballet and Bullets.

The first fanfic I read was either LT2000's Dakaath: Prince of Darkness or Midknight's Traitor's Within.

First fanfic I read was some retarded Hermione/Snape shit. It was novel length and extremely well written, but the plot was kind of dumb and the romance, obviously, was disgusting. It was enough, however, to get me hooked, and I soon found HPFF, then Portkey, FFnet, and finally the glory of DLP and PC.

First fic was a Pokemon one. Don't remember the specifics, but I know it was located somewhere at Serebii Forums Fan Fic section. First Harry Potter one came after DH came out and I stumbled onto a fluffy fic where Harry and Ginny got back together, and I think I liked it...

At least now I know better.

EDIT: Just thought that I'd add that in my early weeks, I never encountered a fic with slash in it. Never. Seriously, I never accidentally stumbled onto one, for which I'm a little proud. I did not get scarred!

Pokemon Master was my first fanfic, and after that I dived straight into other Pokemon works and Ranma 1/2 fanfics.

I can't remember exactly which HP fanfic was my first, but one of the earliest ones I do remember reading was Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix II by Miranda Flairgold.
It still exists on the net, and apears to have had a makeover at some point. I don't know how active it is these days though.

Like many people on this site, my first fanfic was Barb's The Psychic Serpent; a fic which is certainly worth reading - even now. For those of you that aren't familiar, it went on to become a couple hundred thousand word trilogy. I found it through Limewire when I was looking for leaks of the fifth book (which hadn't been named at the time) and I can vividly recall trying to convince my girlfriend that Harry and Hermione having sex did not mean that it wasn't really the fifth book.

From there I suppose I started searching for others to read. I often perused that awful Harry/Ginny site that Perspicacity posted Pathos and Hallows on (SIYE?) before I found FFN. It was years later that I signed up here, but I'm pretty sure I found DLP through reading Bungle in the Jungle.

Ah, the memories. If I would have taken all the time I've spent reading fanfiction and used it on scanning my college textbooks, perhaps I would have a degree in something. But then again, who can resist the allure of a well-written Independent!Harry?

    My very first fanfic...

I was eight, and it was Ruroni Kenshin slash. With graphic smut. I found it accidentally, and at the time, I didn't really know what fanfiction was. Even while I was reading it I didn't know what fanfiction was, I just kept wondering why I hadn't seen this episode, and why Kenshin was being tied down by his friend.

I am almost certain that the BDSM butsecks scarred me for life.

Barbs first book under false advertising for me too. I didn't even really know something like fanfiction existed at the time, but I became kind of suspicious when the author went to great length describing how Harry worked out and got a summer job, etc.
    Didn't sound like Rowling.

False advertising for me, too. OotP as well. I knew pretty much straight away it wasn't real, but I think I read two chapters or so before skipping ahead and stopping. It wasn't that long, and incomplete. I remember the end of the first chapter involved an attack on a restaurant (I think it was attack, but essentially...) leading to Dudley finding out he was a wizard and ended up going to Hogwarts. The only other thing I remember was some card competition that was going on, and Dudley might've been Harry's opponent in the final...

Yeah. Wasn't great. I didn't actually start reading until after HBP when a friend introduced me. Her idea of a good fic, unfortunately, was Supernatural slash. I started looking around FF.net, saw HP had a ton of fics and took a look. Viridian's would've been one of the first, but not the.

Joe's trilogy was the first for me. It was freakin' mindblowing, since I was 12 at the time and all soft and malleable. I stumbled upon FF.net as soon as I finished that, and I haven't looked back since.

Now that I'm thinking about it, it's kinda freaky; who else remembers searching for HP stories with more than 100,000 words and getting 2 pages?

MY first fanfic was very good actually. It was superHary! Nicholas Flamel is his mentor. in his 6. year. Harry is a part of a group of super powerful Wizards. -DD and Flamel as well- Story was Turkish -my mother language- but author forgot the disclaimer and rowling sued him.
I would give 3,5/5 right now, it was that good. (Harry/Susan Bones pure win)

I was very sad when author didn't write 7. book:wall:

it would be better than canon at least

I'm in the same boat as Kensington; the first fanfic I ever read was Frank Verderosa's FFVII internet series, one that I liked so much (and found so hard to find recently) that I uploaded it on my FF.net account. It hasn't aged as well, but it's still one of my favorite, particularly The Mind Slayers.

Yeah, I tried to re-read it a few months ago and I just couldn't get into it. That said, I do have fond memories of the series. I was either in 6th or 7th grade when I stumbled upon the series and it took me far too long to realize that "The Search for Aeris" was not a walkthrough on how to resurrect Aeris. Damn you Sephiroth!
