I'm curious as to what will happen to Harry Potter fanfiction if the 7th book has a definite and closing ending. Do you think it will decrease in popularity? Increase? Or remain the same?

Since a lot of the stories follow cannon and are the writers' own interpretations of Harry's defeat of Voldemort, I believe that a definitive ending will result in the dying out of the current craze over Harry Potter fan fiction.

    What do you guys think?

This was already asked a long time ago, so I'll just say basically the same thing. It'll be even more popular, if anything. People will come up with many ways to continue it. A definite ending will just be an easy subject to base continuations off of.

Given my post experience in the field of fanfiction, I feel entirely safe in saying that about 5 years after the final book comes out, people may start slowing down somewhat. Fandom will start slowing at about ten years out, though.

Have no fear, there'll be plenty of time to write more Dark Lord Potter

Oh. If you could give me the link to that thread, it'd be great.

Do you really think it'll become more popular? I don't see that happening unless Rowling has a really controversial ending. It seems like the Star Wars and LOTR fandoms are still going strong, although the extent of HP craze has really reached another level.

Maybe you're right. Maybe the HP universe/fandom has evolved to a point where it no longer needs cannon. Hopefully, that is the case.

There ya go. It's old, though, responding to it would likely be considered necromancy.

.....It isn't necroing if the reply is a thought out and insightful piece. People only get pissed when people Necro with things which don't even need to be said, such as 'I think it'll die out' as an example for this type of thread.

Yeah, but when have you ever seen an intelligent response months later? It seems to be a rule that a "necro" response is stupid and adds nothing.
