There's a right shift key? Wow.

I usually just map shit to it for gaming, other than that I never use it.

I wish I could change my answer now. I've been writing a good deal to test it out, and I've found I never ever use the left shift unless I'm on a keyboard without a numpad and need to use a number. I can, but it's just more natural for me to use the right one, I think.

Even when I do force myself to click the left shift key, I find my right pinky already went to the right shift. I am American, though, so I've grown up on computers with big right shifts. Snarf, I believe, has an oddly placed right shift on the net book he got recently, and it kills me whenever I try to use it.

I use the right shift key, but that's mainly because the left shift key on the keyboard I learned to type on was broken.

One more for the dual-shifting brigade here, thanks to the wonders of touch typing instruction. The breakdown in my case is:

*Left shift for N, H, Y, and every key to the right of those
*Right shift for some but not all of the keys to the left of NHY.

Until I tried it out now, I thought that it was a perfectly even division between left and right based on the key layout, but it seems that I do have a moderate left bias.

left probably about 90% of the time. Partially due to gaming with left hand keyboard + right hand mouse, but also do to extensive use of 3D modelling programs which use the same practice.

Bumping this because, four years later, I may have unlocked the mystery.

On pretty much every keyboard I've used, the right shift has been over twice as wide as the left one and just plain easier to reach. The left key seems to be smaller to accommodate the \ key. I'm assuming this is just a regional difference, as Ghostthree's is different (http://www.duckychannel.com.tw/en/images/products/DK9008S/DK9008S_08.jpg)

    Left shift: https://i.imgur.com/pgTDwwM.jpg
    Right shift: https://i.imgur.com/xXphKhc.jpg

His return key is shaped differently and the \ key is placed there instead.

    I'm not a mutant! Hah!

Man that looks weird. My keyboards have always had wider right shifts.

I learned how to type in elementary school on a computer where only the left shift key worked. So that's how I still type today.

Incidentally, on my laptop the right shift key is the smaller one, to make space for the four arrow keys.

For typing text, I use the right shift. Then again, I also play racing games with only two fingers on the arrowkeys.

Mmm, my Shift keys have (almost?) always been the same size on my keyboards, although like others, I mostly do use the left shift due to Mouse + Keyboard gaming usage, as far as frequency is concerned. Otherwise, I mix it up fairly evenly when typing depending on the position of a given letter.

I was thinking about this and realised I've very much almost never used the right shift key. Maybe it comes from having small hands. How's my hand meant to get all the way over there?

Yeah, I've seen laptops set up like that (though never owned one). I'm from New Zealand, so maybe it's a Pacific thing?
