Neville is just plain better, Ron is a whiney kid who wants the bigger toy always (like Pig).

 

Ron's a stupid prat. Neville rules. That's it, plain and simple.

Welll, both have good characteristics, but I would prefer Neville. Compare the way they met.

Ron blurts out if he's really Harry Poter and asks about an uncomfotable subject.

Neville just asks if he's seen his toad.

Well one thing we can all agree on, Ron and Hermione should be killed in the next book, that would be enjoyable.

Ron has problems with his Aunt Muriel's mouth-searing kisses. And with Ginny in the Weasley household...you can't get more genuine problems than that.

I chose Neville. There's some character development for him, at least he isn't as pathetic as he used to be. Ron remains...stupid.

 

Well, unlike many other people I'd like to stick with Ron in this one. I mean, Ron's an important character in Potter books, if not for any other reason than Harry having a male best friend. Sure Ron has lots of bad traits in him, like being jealous and distraction for Harry, but he is a teenager and so it'd be rather ridiculous to expect him to behave all mature.

On the other hand Ron has been a fairly good friend to Harry. He went with Harry and Hermione for PS and has often been on Harry's side when encountering Draco Malfoy. Plus he's(in my opinion) good chess player and at least decent keeper(and Harry hasn't been any little angel either with all that bitching he did in OotP).

Also, Ron has accused for not doing anything to make his ambitions true. He may be lazy lots of time, but at least Quidditch's something that he's ready to put effort to, like when in OotP he sneaked out to practice for Keeper's position.

All in all, I'd definitely choose Ron over Neville, as to me Neville appears to too much of clutch to be in front line of things. But preferably both of them should keep out of Harry's way when he's dealing with serious stuff like Deatheaters and Voldemort(of course this kind of scenario doesn't stand well with Canon!Harry, but as I seem to have some kind of lone hero complex, it's what hope for).

 

I don't think it matters. J.K Rowling created Ron as a sidekick to Harry, and Neville as a potential side hero.

The comparisons between harry and Neville are a lot. They are both practically orphans, live with relatives, and they both try hard at what they do. (Neville just sucks at what he does) I think of Neville as a side character with no real importance except as a potential Voldemort destroyer.

 

Wow you've really dumbed yourself down, have you even thought about what you wrote? I agree with fantasyduck. Besides one fight in their fourth year harry and ron have been inseperable where Neville isn't even an established character. Neville is a chubby pussy who FF authors write up as being an extremly loyal, powerful character. When in all reality Neville has done nothing to make us believe this. Ron atleast has been brave and extremly loyal, jealous at times yes, but loyal. The defining moment for me came in CoS when he followed harry into the chamber too save his sister. That scene shows importance too me.
1. Family matters too him above all else (even if he was saving ginslut).
2. He wanted to help his friend.
3. The retard has balls, first the whole chess game in PS/SS now this, followed by PoA and the DoM fight.
Neville has been brave yes, most notably the DoM and trying to stand up to the trio in PS/SS but he has done nothing else in the series, and to me resembles Peter Pettigrew in his hanging out with more powerful friends and having not too many talents. I feel that if anyone is going to betray the trio/order by choice or by torture, it will be Neville i don't think some instantaneous fire will be lit under his ass b/c of Bella torturing his parents , i feel that he will crumble and give in before being tortured until he pisses himself.

Got to choose Neville over Ron. Unlike Ron he has grown and changed. Besides Neville can easily kick ass. I remember a quote from a reviewer or author somewhere. "Ron is an asshole, you can clean him up but he will always be an asshole. That said you can't do without him." Neville was originally comic relief but had evolved into a decent guy. Sad thing is that he's just about Harry's equal and Harry supposed to be the chosen one.' Ron on the other hand has not changed and is a horrible character to interact with to begin with. Its true that he has a few good points but his bad points outnumber the good and when entering fandom he can only go three ways.

One Ron remains the same and the characters dance around each other in a massive love dodecahedron.

Two we play up Ron's anxieties, his jealousy and his greed = traitor Ron.

Three we assume that being good a chess alone trasnlatas directly into the small group tactics that wizards would use in combat. We give him Hermione and they fall in love with different people with no hard feelings from anyone and... well most authors get bored at this point and the story wraps up twenty chapters of characters development in a five paragraph final battle.

I'm going to have to say Neville. Why I really have nothing aganist Ron, I just like Neville more as a character. Plus it would have taken him alot of guts to stand up to Harry in the first book and that I can respect.

 

Well both characters have their good and bad traits but i think Ron is more annyoing because yes he may be a teenager but come on after everything those three have been through, you would think that not just Ron but Harry and Hermione would all smarten up. Rowling seems to be mocking the whole death threat hanging over their heads. Neville had alot of potential, character wise, and if Rowling was a good writer she would have developed his character more than she has. Neville as Harry's friend and not ron.

Holly crap that is so true the last paragraph especially. Thats how every author writes Ron and Hermione fics. Ron becomes the general and using his awsome chess powers tells the DA what to do using strategy. Harry and ron become closer and the author typically uses some corny speech right before the final battle about ron saying that he will go all the way with Harry till the end then they will have some flashbacks of things that never happened, then they share a few tears and battle for like 5 minutes before the DA amazingly defeats the death eaters and Harry finishes off voldemort with his love for his friends. lol i think i got all of it.

 

Neville kicks ass. I love a good Ron!bashing story.

 

exactly ron just seems like the person who would take the easy route to get his fame and attention.

plus neville is so similiar to harry, if the story was more realistic harry would of came to the magical world acting like neville because of being raised by the dursleys.

Ron and Neville are both losers but at least the latter character can be recycled.

 

I would pick Neville over Ron any day. Ron's childishness is what I dislike most about him, he is well aware that there is a war going on but he does not do anything other then talk about Quiddith or play Chess. (not that harry was better in HBP but still)

Neville works hard to improve which is more then you can say about Ron
