I spam that button harder than my F5. Makes it easier for me to see new threads emerging and respond rapidly [by reading and lurking].

I don't use it much, primarily because I only follow certain subforums. It's easier to just go in there and see what updated. There was a point where I used it (shortly after a thread/IRC discussion similar to this one, IIRC) but not anymore.

New Posts is the way I like the threads organised. Use it all the time.

Also, this. I think I mentioned that occasionally as well. And furthermore, it's also the reason why I wondered in the improvement thread if it was possible to have a function that excluded threads where the only new post was from someone you ignored. It's kinda useless to be led to a thread, only to find out you won't read the post anyway.

Yeah, I don't use it. Though it does seem convenient. Two things that annoy me about it however is that there's no easy way to just mark a thread as read. Like how you can on the main page by double clicking the red lightning bolt thing on the left. Secondly, there's no way to directly link to the first unread post, as you can by clicking the Thread title under the "Last Post" heading on the right side of the main page.

If you could do those two things easily from the "new posts" thing I'd use it every day with love and abandon.

Edit: I'm gonna feel stupid if there is some way to do that. :/

Ditto. Two life-saving links imo. :v

    EDIT: Ellisande, you can.

And the second thing you want is the black arrow left to the thread name. Go to New Post is pretty much the only way I look at threads.

I seriously think people don't even know about the forums >_>

I rarely use New Posts. The main reason being that when I'm browsing I generally have an idea of the type of threads I'm going to look at.

I always start by checking UserCP for any updates to subscribed threads and/or my Groups. If nothing is there then I either (1) go to the Multimedia sub-forum if I'm in the mood for amusement and check the latest posts in Funny Pictures, etc. plus any random threads that look interesting, (2) Check out the Dresden Files sub-forum if I'm in a Dresden state of mind, or (3) go have a look in For Review and WbA for anything new to read if I'm in the mood for that.

If I've exhausted all of those options and I still want to kill time, then I will either (1) use New Posts or (2) Show latest posts by CheddarTrek and look for replies to things I've been posting in lately. If neither of those things sates my appetite for DLP then I will randomly browse around the site manually (this often results in the most interesting DLP sessions).

So I do use New Posts but not all that often. It's a great tool though if it's your thing.

Edit: @Sesc -- yeah, the 'Black Go-to-New-Post Arrow' button is probably my favorite button.

Well, one mystery solved. Who wants to make my day and give me an easy way to mark as read?

Like KrzaQ, I have it as my DLP bookmark, complete with keyboard shortcut. I used to do the browsing thing, but this is just streamlined much better, and I don't miss things like I used to occasionally by just viewing by forum. It's just the best way to do it for me.

I had no idea what it was before I saw this thread but it seems like I'll be using it from now on.

Can't say that I even noticed it before as, with few exceptions, I visit the same sub-forums every time. After having clicked on it, it does seem like it could come in handy.

[Edit: Since visiting this thread earlier, I have been using it consistently... so I ticked "Yes".]

Another vote for main browsing method, unless I'm looking for something specific.

Same here - it's a hell of a lot easier than looking through all the different sub-forums, which there is a hell of a lot of.

Almost exclusive New Posts user here. The only time I don't use it is when I'm searching for a specific thread and use the search bar instead.
I also abuse the View First New Post in each thread too.

    Precisely this.

As far as I'm concerned, New Post is the only efficient way to know what's going on around here, and the suggestions itt about how to improve the function seem pretty constructive.

    Also in my bookmark, btw.

Jon: Fair warning, this link will mark everything as having been read.

    Tried this?

GODDAMMIT OZ! I thought you were linking to this and now I don't know what posts I haven't read yet. D:

At least I already had my New Posts tab open, so I can scroll back to the last post I (think I) read.

Just to illustrate what I'm talking about:

These are both non-HP fics, but in case of the bottom one, there's no way to tell, because Revlis didn't add a tag.

And this is how a HP fic looks like:

    Notice the difference? I don't.
