The monarchy is a ceremonial historical thing with no real value other than tourism and a sense of history and culture.

It is and it kind of has to be. Despite how arrogant and excessively patriotic we seem, America still is still arguably the most diverse country in the world and therefore potentially the most divided nation in the world.

See, we don't have/can't have (for better or for worse) the same kind of nationalism or nationalistic ideas many other countries have to unite its people. We have no common history or heritage, no common language (not really, given how prevalent foreign languages are spoken at home), no common ideology, culture, culture...etc. I mean, seriously, what would the US be if not for artifices like the flag and pledge.

The general idea is that so many have died to preserve this country's general "freedom" that it is to be respected.

 

What IS the pledge though, what does it mean? Who says it? Why do the say it?

And am I right in saying that because America has a diverse culture without a long history that the flag is a symbol of unity?
