Before i toss this idea out ther i wanna give some quick backround info so you can "see" why i belive this works for cases like me.

If you have ever been to a party im sure youve met the people that look like fine normal people, but they tend to not talk alot. In fact they often seem nervous to talk alot and you cant get them to open up for the life of you until theyve been around you enough to feel comfortable. Once they know you and feel comfortable theyere just like anyone else.

I am that kind of person. As i have alot of older friends i tend to be at alot of parties with alchohol, and even around my house grabbing a beer or two isnt really a big deal. guess that comes with the terrirtory of working hard. My dad feels ive earned my right to drink a few beers becuase im a contractor like him and work my ass off.

anyways i notice that at these parties if a drink 2 or 3 beers ill completely open up and not be afraid of that first introduction. Im not at all drunk, and still completely have my mind.
So i thought why not try writing after drinking a couple beers? I found that if i do this ideas tend to flow much more easily and im not afraid to write that first paragraph to the chapter that always tends to be the hardest part to get out, afterwords everything else just flows behind it.

So i figured id share that. If you tend to not be able to get that first start off to a chapter down on paper, or come to a stump where writing gets harder try knocking back a beer or so and see if it helps (assuming your parents arent gunna fillet you alive if you do, or your over 21)

I can't remember who, but I seem to recall one of the fanfic authors I follow claiming that he or she tried writing while drunk and got something like thirty pages written while lit only to discover when he\she woke up the next day that they'd written everything in the wrong tense...

lmao, bummah. But as i said, i dont get drunk, infact i only drink a couple beers for this technique and i can barely feel the effects of it. More of a subconcious thing really.

Its really only for the effect of lessening your fear, or insecurities, or whatever it is that holds you back.

Generally when writing i have a bunch of stuff in my head that i cant get on paper. Couple beers down and i have no problem writing something down which i can then alter to perfection instead of perfecting it in my head first which is harder.

9th grade at my boarding school I had a World History exam.

I got drunk studying for it the night before.

I woke up the next morning thinking "Goddammit I am sooooo fucked... Meh, why the hell not?" And I had a few more.

I went to take my exam and it was 10 questions, all essays. I got the highest grade out of anyone taking the exam. When I got it back, it had a comment at the top:

"Was the tangent of why the Chinese (who were stressed from their exams) should have just gotten piss drunk really needed?"

    ROTFLMAO, Gio!

You couldn't have handed them a bigger clue if you'd given them a few whacks with a clue-by-four! --and they still missed it!

--bornagainpenguin (who'd loved to have read those essays..)

    EDIT:

The 'n word clue' should have been 'bigger clue' I don't use that word; I work with too many people who are African-American to even think about playing with that particular grenade!

Ack, I don't drink, but you're tempting me there. That's my biggest problem with writing, I just can't transfer it from my imagery in my mind to words and always second guessing my words. Maybe if there was a study done somewhere with proof to back up this phonomenem I'd try it out.

I've actually done this. I wrote near enough a full chapter whilst inebriated only to discover that the whole thing looked like a convulsed pile of crap. Of course my writing practices when sober are not what one would consider normal, for instance the last couple of chapter of my story have been written backwards from the last paragraph threw to the first. It may well work for some, but as much as I would like it to it doesn't work for me.

That sounds fun, writing from finish to start. I've read stories like that, but haven't tried writing that way yet.

For me, alcohol makes me too calm to write. I'm much more likely to curl up in a corner and doze after drinking alcohol. Do you think it depends on the way an individual responds to alcohol?

I usually have to be sleep-deprived and emotionally drained to write anything at all. Or on a caffiene high.

It's the only way to go.

My fic appeared to me when i was a little tipsy a few weeks ago I sat down right there, and wrote half the first chapter out. I checked it out the next day, and i really liked what i wrote, so i undid the sixty-something spelling and grammatical errors and proceeded to continue the fic.

I really think it works...i got a lot of positive feedback on the idea, and i'm working towards getting into that general state tonight and writing the rest of my third chapter.

Try it out, guys...it really helps.
