Yet another burning day.

Hi all, I was just reading a fic and came accross something that's been getting more and more annoying over time. Almost every single time Fawkes is mentionned, for no apparent reason, in Dumbledore's office he appears to be nearing a burning day. Now I love Fawkes, he's a brilliant bird and sometimes a terrific plot device. But I really don't see the point of having him in there at all if his sole purpose is for somebody to look at him and notice he's getting ready to die and be reborn, I really don't. Unless it's supposed to remind us that he can or that this is the magical world, if the former surely we all know he can do it and if the latter... well you'd have to be a bit dim to forget that.

Some people can't think of anything to fill space in an story and thus, they put in Fawkes. He's short, sweet and convenient.

I've seen just as many stories were he is just fine, sitting on his perch, preening. Doesnt really bother me unless the author spends three paragraphs detailing it.

    Then we have a problem.

yeah sayo is right, if its just a small sentence then i don't see why it bothers you. some people put in Fawkes just to fill up small details in their story.

Fawkes is one of my favorite characters in the entire series.

He's the only one who's never been in a slash situation [With the notable exception of one, a Harry/Fawkes, but in that story, Phoenixes are of a single gender, so I guess it doesn't count.]

He's yet to display any annoying quality whatsoever.

Maybe because he's almost nonexistent, but hey, you take what you get.

Plus, he's a bird. A cool fucking one at that.

Might also be because our first introduction to Fawkes in canon was him on a burning day as well so maybe they are copying that.

Mhm. When most of them think Fawkes, they think 'Dumbledore', 'Burning Day', 'Headmasters Office'. Of course, you put them together, you get that same scene most of the time.

Fawkes is cool because he is a fire bird. A pyromaniac would kill to have a bird like that.

Well it's simple why it bothers me:

Burning Day is the equivilent of a Pheonix having it's period. And personally, the last thing I want to read is "Julie Anne had her period today".

On a separate note, why was The Office not mentioned in the discussion of H/Fawkes pairings?

o_O, I forgot about The Office. Granted, the scene wasn't long, but I do remember Harry.....eh, better not.

I wish we could start up The Office 2...

I'd be happy to help :)

Well if you want to... One weekend when there are no fat girls around *shudders* I'll get nice and drunk -- and then suddenly there will be 5,000 words of pure dirty dirty dirty... Well you get the idea.

    Wanna collaborate?

Sure, I got some pent up ideas that need releasing.

I think we should add some cameos and spoofs of other stories.

Do you have a basic premise? Or should this one be a plotless disgustfest?

Fawkes can really be a great plot device to use...if you're writing an Indy!Harry that breaks away from Dumbledore, that is. Since Fawkes can go anywhere, and transport people, that really does make him a viable threat.

I personally had Harry force a burning day on Fawkes for exactly that reason, because it'd be so easy for Dumbledore to get Harry through his bird.

Actually, that could even be a great idea for an Indy!Harry story, with Dumbledore using Fawkes to monitor Harry, like by keeping an eye on him and controlling his movements by having Fawkes flash Harry back to his room. It'd also be funny to see Fawkes flash into a room and accidentally catch something, like the curtains, on fire :p

I don't think Fawkes can find someone that doesn't want to be found by the sender.

If it was that easy, DD would have Fawkes fireteleport Voldemort in his sleep in front of Harry's wand.

Either that, or Fawkes's abilities can be easily circumvented with some sort of charm.

The flame-freezing charm, perhaps? Or a ward version of it... Anyway, I don't really mind seeing Fawkes near burning day. It's usually just a ploy to increase the chapters content by talking about how sickly Fawkes looks. I guess it's just a personal preference thing though.
