Applied Cultural Anthropology is actually really good. Only just finished chapter 3 but liking it so far. If it maintains the quality I think it's library worthy.

 

Gave Applied Cultural Anthropology a go and I love what's been written so far.

Haven't really started any new HP fics for a long time, but this is a somewhat fresh idea and a good execution. I feel the way Hermione deals with everything is spot on. It also doesn't fall into the trap a lot of these Slytherin fics do and go to the extremes of either making the Slytherins heavily misunderstood, or alternatively, acting too much like full grown adults already.

 

This story is really well done, regular updates, original, lack of failures, author have really promising plans, (quotes are from review responses).

But, yes it as far from "Equestria" theme as it is possible, chapters are very short and story is not fast moving (50k words/9 months/18 chapters and they still are before the first year at Hogwarts).

 

Criminal Limit, which updated a few weeks ago, EoS, which hasn't updated in a wile.

Prince of the Dark Kingdom is okay but not the hottest.

 

The Prince Who Was Promised, by cxjenious. Still in the beginning but wonderful is little to describe this fic.

Awaken Sleeper, by WaterMage, that thankfully is back on track!

Those two are my favorites by far, but Hogwarts Battle School by Kwan Li and The Last Avatar by Sorting Cat are also updating favorites and excellent fics overall.

 

Aside from The Prince who was Promised which has been mentioned in almost every post, I forgot Death Wish by APH.

He alerted me on IRC to that, so thought I might add that.

 

"Harry Potter and the Natural 20" (in Library) and "I Fall(out) to Pieces" (very promising start, well done interaction between wide set of characters but there is a big potential for horrific fail) were recently updated.

 

That was a surprisingly fun read. It's more of a crack fic but a very well done one. Reminds me of those old Indy!Harry fics where they go off to start a new school.

 

Circular Reasoning is still updating so I'll throw that in the ring since every other fic I would have picked has been mentioned.

 

"Harry Potter and the Methods of Rationality" was updated (with DLP style events).

Forgive my lack of knowledge of MoR, I tried a couple of chapters years ago and didn't like what I read: After all this time, the 100k+ words, it’s still in First Year?

MoR turned me off at the summary so I never even glanced at the first chapter.

 

500k word and the troll incident happened just now? That has to be some kind of a record.

 

HPMOR have problems but "pointless rehash of canon" is certainly avoided, as troll is not used as method to arrange meeting between Harry, Ron and Hermione it happens significantly later.

On topic, my favorite currently updating fic is probably Traveler by The Straight Elf. It's just been getting so epic lately. ...It's sad how few updating good HP fics there are right now. Most of those are crossovers, too.

 

From what I can recall the story got slightly better than average overall rating in the review section, and that was mostly because alot of people were giving it 1-stars in protest or something because they loathe the author and his constant begging for money to his noble cause. Didn't help when he started holding chapters hostage in exchange for donations and started crying to his reviewers about how DLP as a whole was bullying him. I can understand why people despise him, but that's a silly reason to remove all traces of the fic from the forum.

tl;dr. DLP was split evenly 50/50 on wether it was shit or good.
