I like MoR. Can't say I really give a shit about who wrote it as it's enjoyable to read.

 

It was dead average actually and the people that voted it 1-star were probably counteracted by the people that registered to the site just to vote it 5-stars.

Please don't turn this into a thread about MoR, this discussion has been had a thousand times. It isn't a story, it doesn't belong on DLP.

I'm pretty sure he means like how the bible isn't a story.

I think nmb means it's a story... but only as a vehicle for preachiness.

 

Propaganda and storytelling aren't mutually exclusive, nor does one necessarily diminish the other.

And if it has to be propaganda, wouldn't you rather it be something that teaches people useful things like cognitive science rather than harmful things?

 

To go on a completely different topic, because I'm loath to see the previous one continue:

I rather like A Better Fate. It's a GoT fic with Jon deciding to go down a different path that doesn't end with him at the wall. At times, it can be a cumbersome story, but I like it all the same.

It's a meta fic. Its purpose is not to tell a tale but to be an expose for a pretentious intellectual wank job. I can't stand such dishonest phony fics and I'm truly puzzled how so many readers can't see the fakeness.
How can anybody suspend their disbelief while reading that.

 

Read a book written by an actual cognitive scientist? Plenty of pop-sci books around if you want em. Hell, peruse last year's compilation of Edge if you want something similar, except stripped of the useless pretension of being a story.

The bits and pieces of this story that I read did introduce me to newish concepts, but then, for me, that's not the purpose of reading fiction.

Wouldn't have been a problem if everyone who hated it just stopped posting about it, dunno why people would want to waste their time like that. If you hate it, fine, tell everyone why and what makes the fic shit then go read something else.

And to avoid being a hypocrite I'll stop talking about MoR in here.
