Not much is known about Hermione's family; all we know is that they're married. No names, nothing.

JKR originally meant to have them go through a divorce in Hermione's fifth year, and she was supposed to have a sister (non-magical, I think) - they were trimmed/cut due to timing issues, specifically Hermione's sister being too late a concept.

But seriously - Dan and Emma Granger? Such a thing is only seen in shitty Harmonian fics.

Or authors who lack imagination...but then again, isn't that one and the same?

I hate the cliche where Harry is malnourished and has to take nutrient potions or whatever ridiculous names people come up with.

You know, I've seen the names Dan and Emma Granger so often that I thought they were canon. I honestly thought JKR had named them in some interview or something.

It's usually 'nutrient potions', right? Worst.

A prime case of little bits of fanon being seen as canon, methinks.

Then again, with the way Pottermore is going, I wouldn't be surprised if one of the retarded monkeys, who ghost write for the site, actually make it canon.

Just curious, are you turned off by the name or by the concept. If it wasn't named would you care?

You guys do realize it comes from Harry/Hermione shippers - parents named after Daniel Radcliffe and Emma Watson? You realize that right? RIGHT?

It doesn't explain why Harmony writers think it's so clever. It's really, really not.

It's their deluded version of a foreshadowing event, methinks.

Let's be more exact, is comes from BAD Harry/Hermione writers. I've seen one decently written fic where it was done, sort of, only Mr. Granger was Dan and the wife had some french name so it wasn't as egregious and might've even been unrelated. I've abandoned otherwise ok fics just for this alone because it tends to be indicative of later quality.

Also, is it a cliche that Hermione's dad has some sort of military background? It seems like I've seen more than one fic where he was a former member of the SAS or the like.

I don't think thats a cliche, I've only seen it a couple of times over the years. There seem to be a few semi-common themes to Hermione's background. Sometimes they are ridiculously wealthy, and thats a secret that Hermione just happens to have kept from her friends. Sometimes they are particularly poor, but live beyond their means when Hermione is around so as to give her the best. I've seen it, as you mention above, with one or other of them being former military, and I've seen it with one or both of them being current/former criminals.

But I've not seen any of these often enough for them to really be considered cliche.

If I could have worked it into A Mother-In-Law's Love (where I intentionally overturned as many cliches as I could), I was going to have Hermione's parents be named Dan and Emma, short for Danielle and Emmanuel. Alas, it didn't fit (and nos tres reges covered it anyway).

Hermione's father's military background is alluded to at lot in Harmony stories, most notably Bobmin's work. It's not enough, apparently, that her parents be dentists, but they must also be action heroes--and practicing nudists, to boot.

A pet peeve of mine that I don't think has been mentioned is the exchange: "Are you insane?" "If I was, would I even know it?" I think Jeconais uses it about a hundred times in his stories and others have copied it for some godawful reason. Painful. It's lazy writing and wasn't even funny the first time.

Didn't Santi name Hermione's parents Dan and Emma in his fic? Wonder what that means for its future. :p
