Thanks for the suggestions Perspicacity. I had read Yule Time but I forgot all about it until I started reading it again. I guess that's part of the problem with H/HR (or any pairing really), you forget the good fics after reading them because you've got to wade through heaps of shit to find more good fics.

Another Pet Peeve: Light Harry. Harry anyone read a good light wizard Harry fic? I haven't, though Redemption of the Black Sisters seemed to be going that way. Dark Harry fics are a dime a dozen but good Light Harry, where light magic is well explored and explained, seem to be nonexistent. A couple of fics touch on it, nuhuh's Catharsis and Demon's Feign, Merlin's Pain come to mind, but there doesn't seem to be much more than mentions of it.

Demon's Feign, Merlin's Pain seemed to have less of a 'Light Harry' and more of a psychotic Harry, but maybe that's just me.

That's true but there were also those references to the Cardinal Light I think it was called.

Well... I am somewhat hesitant to recommend it due to slight slash undertones, but Becoming has a Light!Harry in the last quarter of the story or so. Funnily enough, the middle is the best part.

Pet Peeve: Hermione apparently being the only muggleborn in existence in fanfics especially in terms of shipping. Must every other female classmate of Harry's be Pureblood or the very occasional half blood?

All it usually ends up as is the Pureblood/halfblood girl leading Harry around in the Wizarding world.

". . . that word. I do not think it means what you think it means."

I think you're looking for disillusioned, since disenfranchised means:

    1. (a person) to be deprived of the right to vote or other rights of citizenship
    2. (a place) to be deprived of the right to send representatives to an elected body
    3. (a business concern, etc) to be deprived of some privilege or right
    4. (a person, place, etc) to be deprived of any franchise or right
Anyway, sorry for grammar nazi'ing; I think my hackles were already raised by
but that seems more of a typo than the "disenfranchised" did.

    Whatever. >_>

A spell's incantation being the literal description, but in Latin (or whatever). I can't think of any examples off of the top of my head, but you'll have seen them used before - four or five word long incantations.

Like 'Recnac Transfaerso' or 'Animadverto mihi non' (notice-me-not)?

Sometimes it's colorful; other times it disrupts immersion, particularly if it's a silly mush-Latin like 'Smack-downicus!'

I find it arguably better than 'Point Me', but YMMV.

The second one, definitely. Recnac is silly, but nothing like some of the crap I've seen. I can't recall which fic it was in, but Harry is storming Azkaban for some silly reason.

Translated into English (from Spanish, of all languages), his spells were 'mighty hammer of God', 'wands become pigs', 'hot blue lightning' and so on.

"Oργασμός!" Harry snapped. Harry watched in fascination as the pink hued curse ejaculated from his wand tip. Its target, Pansy Parkinson, promptly fell to the ground, screaming in...pleasure?

Harry blinked; why wasn't she silenced? What kind of crappy, Greek spell was this? And...why in God's name was she screaming for "more"?

    Ya'rr. Thread derailment. :awesome

    Stealth omake:

Harry was freaked out; why were the Slytherin and Ravenclaw girls giving him doe eyes? And why in the Hell was Pansy Parkinson, the pug nose bitch of Draco Malfoy, stalking him?!

Well, in canon, there's really not that many muggleborns. I can think of 4 off the top my head (Hermione, Creevy Brothers, Justin). Most are at least halfblood, although there are some we have no background information about (Terry Boot? and I suppose other years that we have no knowledge about). Muggleborns really are not really that common.

Two years of Ancient Greek left me with very little knowledge of the language, but I knew just enough to appreciate that joke. Hurray for education.

I'm sure I read one somewhere were Harry has orgasm!eyes, and 'punishes' Pansy at every opportunity, which backfires as she falls in lust with him. I can't remember anything else about it though...

Google Chrome translates words I double click to English, and Bexis' "Harry Potter and the Fifth Element" (IIRC) has Harry using an orgasm spell on Hermione during practice duels. Or maybe it was another story. I was reading that years ago.

Yep Fifth Element. It wasn't that bad really... but it is extremely long-winded. I forced myself to finish it, but found it to not be one of my favorites because it was just too long.

Good lord, I had forgotten about that. Luckily.

That segues nicely into a pet peeve of mine: When I can see the author leering at his characters off the page. chemprof's fanfics do this for me—I always feel him lingering a little too long on everything Hermione does, and it starts to get really creepy.

Here's one from "When Harry Met Hermione":

The (2), of course, is for a footnote justifying all this awkward business. Something about the way his stories are written makes me think of him writing longhand the next bathroom stall over while Hermione undresses, murmuring "Excellent, Excellent..." It's rough being an H/Hr fan.

It could be worse. It could have been a three-way with Harry, Hermione, and her mother, where the mother is fucked so hard that Harry's sperm injection turns her into a witch.*

*Actual plot from one of Kinsfire's stories.
