    And Poppy Pomfrey/Pomphrey.
I can excuse that, the Zabini/Zambini and the Alastor/Alistair thing because they aren't the main characters, but for fuck's sake, there are nine Weasleys in the story, man. You still get that wrong you should fuck fuck fucking die. :facepalm

Exactly how long have you been reading fanfic? 'Cause if I saw any of that even *hinted* at -- Big Red X

Stop making excuses for these retards.

Heh. I made sure 'twas spelt correctly in a little piece I wrote a while back. Moody is a BAMF.

    Are you serious? :facepalm

    ...

If people can't be damned to spell correctly, I won't be damned to read their (most definitely) crap.

What's one got to do with the other? Zambini & co aggravates me to no end, but of course I have a HP-Word-dictionary for writing, with all the specific words in it -- and for exactly that reason. Making shit harder than it needs to be is stupid.

And for the record, I'm pretty sure I gave the file to Vash once, and he put it up somewhere in a sticky.

Was it created over a long period of writing, with the add-to-dictionary button used really often, Sesc?

No -- I got it from the HP-Lexicon site, I think, with most of the words already in it. The majority of it wasn't my work, in any case. As I said, no need to make it more complicated that necessary.

Actually, 'weasel' is the base word of Weaselly.

Weasley is a word that means "feckless ginger".

:facepalm There are still sites out there that list Ginny's full name as Virginia.

Teachers placing bets on student relationships. So overused that it's not even funny... if it ever were funny, which is doubtful.

    Present tense.
    First person.

Everyone knows Ginny's full name is Vagina. :X

    ...

The humor sort of fell short there.

But present tense is really, really annoying.

    Why present tense?

Generally, it's very badly done and it feels really stilted - and most stories are written third person past, so even if the ratio of good stories to bad stories was the same, there would be far more good stories that aren't in present tense?

I hate it when a fanfic has really long paragraphs. At some point the words just blur and the story becomes less relevant.

    I don't like Harry/Ginny, regardless of context.

Finally, Time Travel fics get boring after the first few chapters.

Basically, what Lungs said. The fact is, present tense is just plain annoying to read unless done by someone who possesses some skill.

    Most fanfic writers do not.

Past tense is far more forgiving. First person is the same deal; it has a tendency to be annoying anyway. So, when coupled with a new/unskilled writer, it can be absolutely intolerable.

Makes me glad I don't read Dresden fic, unless it's a Harry Potter crossover, heavy on the Potter. And there aren't enough non-slash Anita/HP crossovers still updating :)mad:) to fill a shot glass, so the first person thing isn't much of an issue.

IIRC: Vash tried to get together a DLP Dictionary for Word/OpenOffice (LibreOffice). Don't remember what thread it was in...

People who write a crossover but bring the two fandoms together by having a character from each one related to each other e.g. Buffy is Harry's sister

    Phoenix telepathy/speech crap

At least I haven't found a fic where I've liked it.

Also, every SINGLE fucking job has to be a Ministry job, or a job at St. Mungo's. Or else be a Hogwarts Professor.

Long enough to do exactly that most of the time. It's possible I'm a masochist however, because I occasionally skim through a bit to see just how horrible they can get. It also just comes out of no where, sometimes.

The annoying thing is that there isn't anything inherently wrong with the concept, and it could definitely be done at least somewhat interestingly. It just hasn't been - ever, as far as I can tell.

Something I've seen far too often is the inability to distinguish between the words "lightning" and "lightening."

I tried reading a recommended next-gen story just yesterday, and along with that rage-inducing fuck-up, there were about fifteen exclamation points in the first dozen paragraphs, which is in the neighborhood of fourteen too many.

I X'ed out, and felt completely justified in doing so.

For a great number of people, an author making the wrong choice between "lightning" and "lightening" isn't a big deal, and maybe no deal at all, but to quote the (sadly not) immortal Mark Twain:

"The difference between the right word and the almost right word is the difference between lightning and a lightning bug."

Now, try it with the wrong word:

"The difference between the right word and the almost right word is the difference between lightening and a lightening bug."

Just editing the quote to read like that pisses me off.

"Harry cast a Reducto.... blah blah blah"

No! No damn it. He did not cast a "Reducto". He cast a Reductor curse. Reducto is the incantation, not the spell. You do not cast an incantation.

Sorry had to get that off my chest. This story I was reading did it and I died a little inside.
