Congratulations to Entry #6 by bking4!

    Well done, well done indeed!

    Voting rules!
    1. Comment in all the story threads. You don't have to leave 200+ words of feedback this time, so just a minor comment is okay, but feedback is still appreciated.
    2. Vote for your TOP TWO choices.
    3. You cannot vote for yourself - but authors are encouraged to vote.
    4. Just in case something goes wrong with the poll, feel free to give a thumbs up to your top two choices (only) as well, as a fail-safe against polling issues.
    == == == ==
Hey everyone! We're still on the new & different competition wagon train to the stars. Q4 is just too full of holidays to expect/hope for too much so I've broken it up a bit - if it works, and if people like it, we might start making Q2 and Q4 'different' and leave Q1 and Q3 as the 'standard format.' Give me your thoughts in the General Thread on that.

    That said... Welcome to the...

Q4 2019 (Part II) FLASH Competition!

    Topic(s): Magical Fairy Tale

    Word count: 800-1200 words (?!)
There is some debate on what constitutes "Flash Fiction," though most definitions have a hard line of less than 1500 words. Many of them circle around the 1000 mark and quite a few want only a few hundred words. One of the larger online Flash Publishers (here) defines it as "a very short story with a complete character arc written within the confines of 500-1000 words." I took the upper end of that word count and made a small range - though in the future we could always use their exact definition.

    Deadline: December 22nd
The December Solstice! You get the entirety of this day to polish your story. Once you're done send it to @Xiph0 via pm. Authors will be kept anonymous between the two of us, and I will not know who you are until after the competition has ended. Feel free to claim credit for your story if you want it but we'll keep it confidential otherwise.

    Voting: December 23rd - December 30th
Feel free to use beta-readers but don't put your competition entry in WbA until after voting has ended. If you figure out who one of the entrants is then don't tell everyone else.
    Voting Rules
(Pay Attention - these are DIFFERENT for Flash!)
    • Review all entries - there is no word count requirement for Flash fiction competition reviews, so your comments can be brief.
      • Put the bulk of your review into a spoiler tag.
    • After you have read and reviewed ALL entries, VOTE for your TOP TWO choices in the newly available Poll - this does mean that people can 'cheat' and vote when they haven't read, but I'll try to make sure it 'shows' the voters so we can check if they read each story.
A guide on "how to review" in general is available here. We'd prefer that you not bias yourself by reading other reviews before making your own, but that choice is yours. One of the rewards for authors participating in this competition is the feedback, critique, and overall useful commentary on their work. Don't dial it in.

Note2: Got an idea for a future prompt? Put it in this thread!

Note3: I don't bite. If you have an issue with how the competition is run and whether or not it's unfairly biased in some way, PM me.

It says in small text under the poll title - for me it’s Dec 5, 2019 at 9:38 PM.

You can start writing early if you want, just a minor risk the lead choice will change.

Magical Fairy Tale is sounding better and better, like something that actually should be done as a Flash prompt.

I officially hope that one wins now.

I just scrawled an outline and 300 words on this theme while at lunch, so I am likewise hopeful.

Yeah same. I’ve just finished an entry for Magical Fairy Tale after Zombie’s excellent leading from the front.

Heads up that this thread and the forum header contain contradictory information about minimum length.

    Just noticed that.

Minimum length is 800 words, not 1000 words.

Honestly I'm having more difficulty condensing it than anything else. Don't want it to just be a literal description, and my original fairy tale is just that and is 10k words long.
