So, I was browsing through some old threads and came across this post (which is why I say it's not really my challenge), and it seemed a pretty good idea. Since this was the last post in the thread and this guy is gone, I thought I'd bring it to attention:

I'd prefer a 'delivery method' that didn't involve Snape, though, since it would retire conflict potential in the Hogwarts years. Be creative.

 

Filius Flitwick should be the delivery method.

My idea: Flitwick's mother, a Russian, had raised him when his father left, due to Filius' abnormal height defect. When his magic was realized in 1925, the Soviet government sent him off to England for a magical education. He graduated and pursued a Charms Mastery and, after Dumbledore's defeat of Grindelwald, was ordered to take a professorship at Hogwarts to spy on the greatest wizard of the age, sending all the tidbits about the Ministry he overhears as a staff member and AD's personal friend.

When Voldemort falls, he bewitches Hagrid to give Harry to him, and bundles him off to a Soviet training camp, deep in the frozen wastelands of Siberia. Flitwick returns to England and Dumbledore's side, allowing AD to formulate theories about where Harry is and plant counter-intelligence whenever AD gets too close to the truth.

When Harry returns to England, Filius acts as his handler, passing Harry information and assignments as ordered by the remains of the Magical Soviet Government.

 

I've always had a problem with the idea that Magical Governments mirror their muggle counter-parts.

I don't see why the Russian wizards would have been over run by a bunch of Pinkos. The wizarding world has never industrialized, so the basic set up that Marx required for communism hasn't occured.

 

Some muggleborn informed Comrade Ilych, who assembled a force of muggleborns and overthrew the corrupt Russian magical government to bring in a glorious socialist revolution in both the muggle and magical world, after a quick genocide of the pureblood capitalist opressors. :cheers:

Amazing challenge, I just hope someone takes it up! There probably won't be much room for pairings in the plot though, this Harry will have quite a lot on his plate already.

I assume I can take it for granted that they are imperialist oppressors that are seeking to subjugate everyone in the world under the boot-heels of their tyranny?"

"Well... You could look at it that way..."

"And these Generals... They would be the militaristic junta that operates without accountability to the populations they protect, thereby seeking to reinforce the totalitarian regime that gave them birth?"

"I'm not sure if they see it like that, but... If you insist, I suppose..."

"And to take matter back to their most basic, Beryl and her running-dog lackeys are seeking to regress the political advancement of Japan by seeking to impose a feudalistic style of government over the more highly evolved democracy we currently enjoy."

Luna's eyes glazed over that that statements, but she nodded slightly anyway, which was enough for Usagi to continue. "Right. So, other than the actions of any decent, concerned citizen with a modicum of political acumen, where do I fit in?"

I am back from the void.

I'm happy to see the challenge has generated some interest. I hadn't thought of Flitwick being the 'handler', but it makes sense. Short people tend to be underestimated and in the wizarding world, goblins aren't the most social folks (Flitwick is part goblin, if memory serves). Combine these traits and I think he could make a good spy.

I agree it'd be a toss-up between the Gryffindor red and the Hufflepuff egalitarianism. I think also, on reflection, I may have given into a bit of a cliche by saying Harry should uncritically accept what he has been told. Might he not question it, if he spots logical inconsistencies prior to any exposure to Britain? (He might be only nine or ten, but he could be well-educated and keenly observant - both traits handy for spying, but not so handy for keeping ideologically correct all the time)
