I completely agree with vsd2oc. There are some things that bug, but a lot that make it more than up again.
It is just that wizards are not the epitome of mankind. The elves just have to be pissed off to rid the world of humans. Think about it. Then tell again that the vampires have too much power...

And it is really one of the best post HBP I read so far.

Well, that's just the problem, isn't it? It's one thing to be like "OMG, there's a secret world of wizards with cool powers!" and to explore and develope that new world. It's a whole other problem when you start breaking out:

"OMG, there's a whole group of wizards that can totally overpower all of the other wizards we've met so far!"

"OMG, vampires are like way stronger than wizards and can wipe the floor with them!"

"OMG, elves can like destroy the whole world and stuff!"

It just gets silly. And of course it craps all over the universe that I like, that is the whole reason I even read the story to begin with.

I generally don't like it when authors make their OC's "cool" by having them beat the crap out of/show up established cool characters. This story is basically a universe wide version of that cheap trick.

I love this fic. I love the way she characterizes the different races. So wizards aren't the strongest magical beings in the universe. This surprises you how? In the second book Dobby slams the crap out of Lucius Malfoy with one burst of magic. I'm thinking that wizards never were the strongest and thats why they have all of those anti creature rules in the first place. It makes sense that someone who has lived for 5+ centuries would be more powerful and smarter then someone who has only been around for a few decades. Only a complete dumbass could not get smarter after all those years. And someone that dumb couldn't surve anyway. But i digress.

Yes Miranda seems to have made her own little world. But isn't that why we write anyway? That's what fanfiction is for. Its a way to take your favorite character and make him the person you want him to be without those pesky lawsuits. If you don't like it, click the nice button with the arrow on it and go back to the site menu. It's not all that hard. I on the other hand am waiting for the sequel.

  5. Some people have said that some of the characters were ridiculously powerful. Well, that makes it a little more idealistic, IMO. I mean, let's face it... if you go by canon, and you want to write a fic where he actually stands a chance of beating Voldemort then he would have to:

    A) Get powerful uber-fast
    B) Get a large variety of knowledge, uber-fast
    C) Use that knowledge and power to gain
allies and defeat Voldemort's "army," as well as
    defeat the prick.

Either that, or get lucky... seems more likely to happen in canon. The reason that I believe it has to be in a short amount of time, is that, like it or not... Harry is loyal to his friends. One really big liability, when it comes to fanfiction. Because, Harry "I-wuv-my-fwends-foweva" Potter is going to want to get the war over before his posse winds up dying.

So the cure to the solution is to do the aforementioned, or kill off Harry. You know, I have never seen a fic where Harry dies, and the "power of love" is just the love of a martyr. So that could very well be what happens.

The point I'm trying to get to is that, while this story is unplausable, as well as unorthodox in several key points, it's gonna take a miracle for a childish character to actually beat his enemy.

The theory of all the magical underworlds is plausible, to an extent. Everyone who read OOTP saw that with the Unspeakables. They were messing with magics that went above the basic "frog-to-fashionable-hat" parlor tricks of the general populace.

This theory consolidates the "power he knows not" deal. When I first read that, I thought that it was some bull made up by Dumbledore to give Harry the motivation to actively fight Voldemort. If the prophecy is real, my next thought was that, maybe the Unspeakables power was the "power he knows not." Until I read IP82's fic, because I had completely forgotten about Rookwood.

To conclude my rant; magic is intangible. We don't know how deep Rowling's rabbit-hole goes. We only see what she wants us to see, no more and know less. For all we know, this "Blood-magic" or "thread-magic" can be somewhat common. After HBP, we at least know that some of it exists. True, some of those things were never mentioned in canon. Doesn't mean it isn't in the realm of possibility. Just reality.

I am now finished with my rant. :D

It is a rather good sequel, though I cringe at the possibility of Herry/Draco, however brief. But for a story of this quality of writing, I am willing to overlook it, so long as it does not become the focus point.

Sorry I made a mistake with the link in my last post

Correct Link: Changes in a Time of War, Chapter One

I enjoyed the chapter, though I would have liked it to have a bit more to it. but as a first chapter it was reasonable the next chapter should pick up the pase.

DemonDream - I don't think it is headed into HPDM.

    SPOILER
Maria wants Draco, as her slave, to have his mind on track and use him to replace her old assistant and if he does well enough turn him. She asked Rahkesh to help her get what she wants and as he owed her he complied. Rahkesh is going to use Daray to challenge Draco so he withdraws from apathy.

Okay. I edited the first post and included the sequel. I'm sure you've noticed the change in the title of this thread. No point in giving it another thread, it's just a waste of space.

Now, about the story. This went from being one of my favorites to being a story that annoys me when mentioned. Started off well. Very well, in fact. I liked a lot of the ideas used early on, and the different types of magic that have had indepth explanations are great, especially Blood Magic. Other than that, the over powered races do piss me off. Its okay to have them powerful, even stronger than your average wizard, but seriously... it's hard to believe that one of the vampire elders just didnt get pissed off and decided to rip Voldemorts head off for fucking with their culling of the 'weaker' ones. Prophecy... yeah, okay, but they dont know about that shit...

    Meh...

Edit: I also moved the thread. It should be Alternates for damn sure.

Yeaah, i'd abandon this if it turned out to be one of those stories where Harry gets together with Draco and happens to kill Voldemort during one of his relationship angst periods. That would kill it completely.

I like the sequal and also liked the possibility about a part of Harry's soul being in Voldemort.

As long as the slash wont be thrown in my face so do I not care if it has Draco!Slash. But if it becomes Harry/Draco will I stop reading it.

Why are you lot blatently ignoring her statement of "no pairings for this version"?

well, no real pairing for harry, anyway. She does say there are m/m, f/m couplings, or at least hooking up for the secondary (which she's pretty much made main characters...)

eh. i'll read it if the m/m is pretty much nonexistent

well, I think she also said that there would be no permanent relationships....^^ I really hate it when people make Harry gay... it gets really annoying when he suddenly has the hots for his worst enemy/rival.... *sigh*

ANYway...I still have to say that Daray HAS to be my favorite character. He just has this ... cocky badass thing that amuses me to no end....

yes, that was a random comment, but I was just wondering who are other readers' favorites. I'm just weird like that.

Okay. Even though I didn't read the last chapter of 'A Second Chance', I went ahead and tried to read the sequel. I've got to say... that I can't believe I once liked this author. Of course, I hadn't seen her other shit.
