Don't we know that the only reason that students don't get strung up and whipped by Filch anymore is because Dumbledore outlawed the practice?

I always read it as "outlawed within Hogwarts". That is to say he banned his teachers from doing it.

HP/DF xover. Not that good but it is short light hearted story. There is not much of conflict and few clishês but othervise decent time waster.

And legality of things in itself is a moot point when the minister more or less seems to rule by decree in OotP.

Darth Marrs stories biggest problem is how unrelenting the horribleness is. He does not know what the word 'catharsis' means. It's just blow after blow after blow of 'wow it just got worse again', with a brief chapter of 'huh, nothing too terrible happened this chapter, that means we're probably getting a double dose of pure shittitude next one'.

The Firebird universe, as presented, is one that can literally only end with around 70% of the wizarding world getting executed for it to be a good end. Everyone of any sufficient power is blatantly evil, and the way magic works basically forces this to continue no matter what- bonding is a forced slavery, and its implied that if women weren't enslaving the men (via a plotpoint mentioned in I want to say the second book), men would be enslaving the women (lacking that plot point, as they did before Rowena Ravenclaw's time).

Everyone is evil for the sake of being evil, if their name isn't Harry and friends. Like, pointless, over the top, beyond cartoony, beyond disney evil. Theres a group of 'good guys' in the western US, but all they really do is fight off huge marauding groups of women from other countries trying to reenslave the men involved in it.

The worst part is that Darth Marrs mentioned in an authors note somewhere that a lot of the behavior shown in the story is shit that he apparently experienced personally himself, and he's basing the relationships off that, which is even more fucked up. It also explains his inexplicable need to just take a left turn into crazy town at some point in all his fics.

Man why do MRAs feel the need to inject their fetishes into just about everything?

I like myself some Grimdark every now and again, but that's just fucking retarded.

Is this an assumption? I've never read any MRA stuff mentioned in his author's notes, but I could have missed it.

No, I absolutely have no idea, but reading the summary and what people have said about it I'm fairly okay with accusing the author of such.

I mean I've got fuckall to base it on since I've no intention of reading it myself, but you get the point I'm making.

But anyway. This is fanfiction, not politics, and so long as it doesn't get too preachy I'll likely be content.

But really though come on that premise is fucking retarded

I would love to see your reaction to The Wheel of Time series by Robert Jordan, lol.

Frankly, as far as fanfiction goes, its readable. Not nearly as bad as people are making it out to be.

Its just the fact that the subject and context make the people reading it really uncomfortable. It does deserve some merit for being technically good. Frankly, the story telling is not bad, not bad at all.

I'm with Pers on this one. Darth Mars is a competent writer. Not incredible by any means, but I do end up reading some of his works to completion.
Considering the fact that I have a shitton of original actual Fantasy fiction list to read, that is a rare thing.

    Spanking fetish, anyone?

At least she had ginormous tits. Almost makes her neutering of the only decent character in the story tolerable.

    Oh, who am I kidding?

I find it much easier to read as a Feminist work than a MRA work. The problems that Wizards have in the story do not in any way resemble the problems RL men have, but many of them do strongly resemble problems RL women have. Darth Marss says that it is not his intention, but you could read the story as an attempt to shown men how much it sucks to be female by flipping the gender roles.

The feminist reading doesn't hold up to analysis terribly well, but it'd hold up a hell of a lot better than a MRA reading.

I'm not sure what his intention is, but it reads less like an issue of gender roles, and more of a "How can this possibly get worse? Oh, thats how."

It just constantly gets worse. Over and over and over. Sometimes its Voldemort. Sometimes its the women. Sometimes its both. But whoever it is, the moral of the story so far is "if you're Harry Potter, horrible shit is about to happen to you. Again."

It's like watching a train wreck, though. I keep on reading out of morbid curiosity about whats going to go wrong next, and when Harry will finally snap and go full on mass murderer.

To be fair, at least this story decided to go insane early on- It could have been like his story The Lord of Light (https://www.fanfiction.net/s/6859254/1/The-Lord-of-Light), where it went fine the whole way through until the last chapter, when he literally just took a shit on the story and completely destroyed everything about it for no real reason.

It's part of the Wheel of Time drinking game:
    • Every time Min goes on about how much she loves loves loves Rand, take a sip.
    • Every paragraphs-long exposition detailing exactly what a female character is wearing and how it makes her breasts look, take another.
    • Every time a female character "crossed her arms beneath her breasts" (verbatim), take two sips.
    • Every time Nynaeva tugs her braid, down a shot.
    • Every veiled reference to the author's spanking/BDSM fetishes, take another.
    • Etc.

Edit: to make this slightly more topical for the thread, a tepid "almost rec" for the following:

Standing in the Sun by Tsume Yuki.

Reborn after his death in the war, Sasuke knows one thing. He is the older brother to Harry James Potter. And he's going to be the best damn big brother there is. If Petuina is expecting her oldest nephew to bend to her will, she'd got another thing coming.

It's all of 2 chapters in, 6k words, a reincarnation fic told from Sasuke's POV. Not enough there to judge, but two updates in as many days. A pretty silly (if amusing) premise, closer to the lower end of almost readable.

    Title: World War W
    Author: TheWordWarrior
    Link: https://www.fanfiction.net/s/9869655/1/World-War-W
Story Summary:With Dumbledore dead and Harry gone, Voldemort finds his path clear of all obstacles and sets in motion his ultimate plan: Muggle Annihilation. A strong resistance from the Muggles was the last thing he expected. With an all out war looming in sight, it is up to Harry to make a difference. Decepting the Muggles and stealing their technology was never in his plan though. AU

The Wizards vs Muggles is interesting story idea that is rarely get ever done right, this one seems to be at least somewhat decent so far (no glaring cliches except OC Harry that seems to be a bit paranoid and trained to pro level?)
Story seems to be very loosely inspired by world war Z with muggles outmatched by magic and organizing themselves into colonies for better protection and in middle of it Harry waking up after 4 months of coma to find world turned upside down.

Hm, the author only has one completed story longer than 5,000 words. I suspect this will get abandoned.

Don't know if this has already been put out here, but...

In Bad Faith, by Slayer Anderson. An SI in the body of the Malfoy daughter, growing up with Draco and Lucius and Narcissa. Not bad actually, in a fix-it-fic kind of way. But what made the latest chapter for me was this:
