    Narrative Summary

With the fall of Voldemort and dissolution of the Knights of Walpurgis came peace. A true peace – Great Britain needs not fear another rise from the slain Dark Lord. His existence is forfeit, he has passed from the Now to the After.

Years later, Britain has surpassed its former glory. The Aurors have never been so numerous or well-trained. Only the purebloods in Voldemort’s service were issued pardon. The less fortunate werewolves, vampires, troll, goblins, and lesser Death Eaters were all but decimated in the final battle. Enough remain so that the Auror trainees gain valuable combat experience, but not enough remain to pose a threat.

Since its unearthing, the Veil has been the centerpoint of the Ministry. Intrigued by it, the forerunners of wizarding society built their government around its unassuming seven by seven meter frame and fluttering shroud.

It has embraced hundreds throughout the centuries. Dark Wizards, even fledgling Dark Lords, cutthroats, necromancers, madmen – those considered too dangerous for even the remotest chance of escape from Azkaban. None were ever seen again.

When Voldemort’s last servant was tossed through, something on the other side hit critical mass.

Dozen of Dark Wizards and murderers thought to be executed reemerge, nearly overrunning the Ministry and toppling half of its Departments. None look a day older than the moment they stepped through. A quick reaction time and no shortage of personal valor win the day, however, and the outbreak is contained. With a handful of dead and having caused countless wounds among the Aurors, the Dark Wizards retreat, back through the Veil whence they came.

The Department of Mysteries is immediately put under quarantine. War automatons, blessed by the leading enchanters of the day, layers upon layers of Wards, and reinforced by the wands of an Auror battalion surround it, ready for another thrust into their world.

It never came. The passage of time yielded no incursion. Talk in the Wizengamot turned from defensive measures to attack.

Experiments are conducted, scouts are sent, and an assemblage of elite Aurors, a research team of Unspeakables, spearheaded by the legendary archmage Harry Potter and the core ex-members of the Order of the Phoenix launch a campaign to rout them in their own territory.

Interrogations were held behind doors, but the few captured surrendered no information. They launched themselves at their captors with tooth and nail, needful and desperate to kill them. None of them speak, but their eyes revel in their own pain.

Professional Legilimencers scoured their minds, but discern nothing. Unfortunately, it is only after the departure of Harry and his forces that the Legilimencers begin to show the symptoms of uncontrollably violence and agonizing insanity that plagued the prisoners.

There are records, of course. Each criminal sentenced to the Veil is logged. Of the six hundred thrown through it, only forty is believed to have crossed through the Veil. However, the vast difference in numbers is contrued to infighting.

It is not a totally blind plunge.

Or do they only have the illusion of clarity?

    The Challenge

The question: What lies on the other side?

    Rules

1.) The setting must be fantastical and dark. Kind of like Wonderland in American McGee's Alice.

    2.) This can't be a crossover.

If this was to be picked up by an excellent writer it could become an epic fic, something that I know will keep me hooked.

Alas, my writing skills are average at best.

A thought: the criminals from behind the Veil sound a hell of a lot like Reavers from the Serenity movie.

It can't hurt to put out my idea, but my idea was that Mordred, or someone of notoriety, was thrown through. He meets some entity there that allows them to conduct germ warfare, mutating local fauna into beasts and preserving the bodies of the Dark sorcerors and select parts of their brain such as their knowledge of spells, aggression, etc.

This was exactly what I thought when I saw this challenge =D

    OP-Harry v. Magical Reavers

    I'd read it.

That's some fucked up coincidence. Even the creation of second-generation Reavers kind of matches. I rescind the "Must not be crossover" rule. If it's HP/Serenity, then by all means go for it.

Also, what does OP stand for Logrus?

Fuck, this idea has epic potential.

I think only an author very good at action should take this up though, so I won't even offer. But this can become a great fic.

Over-powered looks really obvious in retrospect. :/

My unofficial idea takes the plot further.

Note that I have a bad habit of revealing too much stuff, so...

Harry's task force meets the Dark Wizards/Reavers in a pitched battle. They are confident since they are well-matched in numbers, but the Dark Wizards break the back of the Aurors. Only a small percentage survive and flee, roving through the blasted lands beyond the Veil, avoiding pursuers.

A surviving Unspeakable presents the idea that the Dark Wizards dominated because they were in real time, thus having centuries to train. This, however, conflicts with the unchanged ages of the wizards, deepening the mystery.

While Harry's band and a portion of the Dark Wizards are occupied avoiding and finding each other respectively, the rest of the Dark Wizards launch another attack through the Veil. The army is much larger than the 600 sent through the Veil through generations of breeding.

The Auror battalion stationed around the Veil finds itself vastly outnumbered, but they fight to hold the Quarantine Zone, allowing the rest of the Ministry to be evacuated.

The Legilimencers that have been "corrupted", so to speak, are at the point where they can pass on the disease through Legilimency but are not totally insane. They take vacations prior to the invasion, and begin spreading the condition overseas through Legilimency.

The end result is the entire world being plunged into the warfare in a mass uprising, while Harry and a comparatively small number of outclassed Aurors are stranded on the other side, wondering what the hell to do.

For an overarching thing, there could be a sentience. Everything on the other side of the Veil is technically dead to the world on the other side, and yet is living to the dimension they are in. So, they are a collective. Once a critical mass is reached, an entity is produced. Much like the Gravemind from Halo. It is a purely mental entity, and extends its influence through Legilimency, directing the movements of its thralls. Give it a cool name like the Thrallmaster.

Kind of an eaborate on the spot thinking, but I thought it was cool.

Would anyone hold it against me if I started writing it? It'd be cool if multiple people took it up.

It'll be great if you or another excellent writer picks it up. It would be something that has the potential to become an epic fic, and something I'd definitely read.

If you pick this up, I certainly hope it won't reduce your ability to work on your other fics.

Every time I read/hear that saying, I think of the Mighty Ducks: "Cake-Eater". Lol'z

Back on topic, Andro has served up an awesome plot bunny that I don't think many can rise to.
