I just saw the Chamber of Secrets movie and had an idea for an Independant!Harry challenge.

What if Harry was to late to save Ginny and the young voldemort was brought back to life.

Harry and Ron manage to make it out of the chamber somehow but leave Lockhart to die Harry then swears to never fail anyone again.

What would Harry be like if he focused more on his studies, choose better electives in third year and no longer trusted dumbledore as much because this is the second time harry had to take care of something that dumbledore was supposed to do.

Could take place directly after ginny dies or could take place a few years in the future.

 

Hum...the problem is that it will end up just being the same as any proactive Harry. And there are quite a few such Harry. You would have to find a plot to go with it.

I figured that plot would be young harry against young voldemort. voldemort would be searching for his older self to merge with him to gain all the power and knowledge of his older self while harry would be learning as much as he could so that he could better protect himself and other people from voldemort.

 

This could turn out to be a pretty good story, given that it's written by a good enough writer. The only problem that I have with it is that it could easily delve into the usual Post-OotP pseudoIndy!Harry stories, only with a younger, more immature Harry with no real-world experience on anything. The only way that I could see this really working well would be to have the scene at the end of CoS as a prologue, with Harry vowing to become stronger, and then cut to when he is 16-17, and create the story from there.

 

I think you should let Harry vow to become better in class and learn more, etc. after Ginny died. He also won't trust Dumbledore so easily. Then after 4th year he really starts training. I don't know if it would be a good idea to let the younger Riddle live. I think you could let him merge with the older Voldemort after the Triwizard tournament. But this way they still would need Harry's blood and so you could stick a bit to canon. If you go another way, Harry would have to fight both the older and the younger Voldemort. I think that would be too much. Maybe when both Voldemorts merge the result is a Voldemort more like the younger Tom Riddle (minus snake like appearance, less powerful) than the canon Voldemort. This would give Harry better chances to win without a sudden jump start in power but with a realistic training.
Anyway this is a promising challenge and I would definitively read it.

 

This would probably work as a long oneshot- like a 24esque thriller, race against time sort of fic. Who can get to Voldemort first? HP, or TR? Then there's the Horcruxes to think of...

 

There already are fics like this.

I forget the names, but I remember one of them clearly had Ginny turn dark, and the younger Tom killing the older Voldemort somehow.
