Often times we get too caught up reading about the trials of the main characters who lead lives so unrealistically eventful that we forget the little guys, the background characters. So your challenge today is this:
    • In a oneshot, choose a character who you feel is often overlooked and write their story (autobiography, childhood memory, life after DH, effects of the war on them, or significant incident in their life).
    • This story must make the character real, show depth (3-D), and be interesting!! Although you do not have to follow the canon exactly you can not completely change the personality and the mannerisms of the character.
    • The piece must be well written with little to no grammar and spelling errors.
    • Do NOT make this person suddenly all-powerful, super intelligent, or anything else that would be drastic.
    • All genres are welcome as well.
List of possible characters (do not feel limited by this list):

    • Crabbe/Goyle (together or separately)
    • Pansy
    • Padma/Pavarti (although Pavarti is not that overlooked)
    • Colin Creevy
    • Flitwick
    • House ghosts
    • Sorting Hat
    • Narcissa Malfoy
    • Ernie ...forgot his last name :(
    • Dean and/or Seamus
    • Katie Bell
    • Alicia Spinnet
    • The Dursleys
    • Arabella Figg
    • Cedric Diggory
    • Cho Chang
    • Fleur Delacour
    • Bill/Charlie/Percy Weasley
    • Victor Krum
    • Kingsley
    • etc...
List of Characters that can't be written about:

    • Harry Potter
    • Ron Weasley
    • Ginny Weasley
    • Hermonie Granger
    • Draco Malfoy
    • Albus Dumbledore
    • Lord Voldemort/Tom Riddle
    • Severus Snape
    • Mrs./Mr. Weasley
    • Fred and George Weasley
    • The Marauders
    • Lily Potter
    • Neville Longbottom
    • Luna Lovegood
    • Mad-eye Moody
    • Nymphadora Tonks
    • and any other main character

    Do I sense a contradiction?

This challenge of yours is painfully insipid and stupid.

Your idea of who is a main character blows my mind. The series' name is Harry Potter. Therefore the main character is Harry Potter, not any of those listed below.

This is ridiculously rudimentary thinking, but apparently it is beyond you.

If any writer at DLP had the slightest inclination to write about them, they would, without this challenge.

Go to Muggle net because either way, your challenge does absolutely nothing.

Andromalius, I have to ask, are you writing this from jail? Because, lately, you act as if you have something you don't want being rammed up your asshole...

Now, she said that your shouldn't be limited to what characters she said you COULD write about AND you should not write about the characters she said you shouldn't write about. Simple. Elementary. Apparently too difficult for you.

Now, I do sort of have to agree that the challenge isn't exactly the epitome of fun. We WANT to write about Harry Potter and other characters that we feel some sort of connection to. The only use we have for side characters is to advance side-plots...

Some of the characters in your "side character" list have had far more lines than some of the characters in your "main character" list...

But you do have a sense of what happened in the pasts of all of her 'main characters.' I don't know the past of a single one of the other characters. The challenge does make sense, and it is not something for anyone to spout 'GTFO' over. It just isn't something most people want to write about, because, due to the fact that we don't know their back story, we really don't feel anything for those characters.

Matter goes out of my asshole, not into it. Do you understand my reasoning? You do have a point though. I'm being a sourpuss. Did you know, Puss in Boots ranks right after the Roadrunner?

What irked me was that this wasn't really a challenge. Just an entreaty for a writer to write about a character that isn't among the, oh, 15ish that the challenger listed. The fellow's not stimulating the mind of someone that potentially accepts the challenge with any original plot details.

My point was that if a writer was interested in the characters and would write about them, they would do so. If they aren't interested, then they won't.

It's just useless in either situation regardless because it doesn't affect the writer's thought process at all.

Something that always irks me is when people making challenges word them as orders. "Do this, do this, don't you fucking dare do this or you'll be dragged into the street and shot in the mouth". If someone takes your challenge, they're taking the idea that you were too fucking lazy to write and doing it for you, and I just know you're going to take some of the credit for it. Trying to boss them around isn't going to endear you to them.

That said, your entire damn challenge can be summed up by the words 'minor character centric that isn't shit'. Seriously, little to no grammar or spelling errors? Did you think that typing that would magically make any submissions beta read, edited, and ready for publication?

I'm with Andro. This would be better received over at Mugglenet.com.

However, I will oblige with two autobiographies!

Vernon Dursley died of a heart attack on Nov. 22, 2001 after realizing he had crushed his wife to death during an act of lovemaking.

They were survived by their son, Dudley, who died on Aug. 9, 2004, from an unidentified STI caught from his childhood friend and bum buddy Piers Polkiss.

Hermonie Granger is the little-known twin sister of Hermione Granger. Unlike her twin she possesses no magical talent, but has the inexplicable ability to travel at will through time. During one of her frequent journeys into the future to withdraw interest from Swiss bank accounts, she ran into Harry Potter. They then proceeded to fuck each other senseless. Harry instantly divorced his wife and escaped with his new girlfriend to Barbados, where they proceeded to have many NC-17 smut-filled sex scenes.

Why are we not allowed to do an autobiography of Lily Potter. I would love to read her post DH story

I really appreciate the positive feedback...obviously most of you seem to love the challenge and love me even more. After all the point of posting a challenge is to have people insult your intelligence...is it not? I mean to assume I'm a writer, even a lazy one? Wow, I'm really flattered, but truthfully I'm simply an avid fanfiction reader. Furthermore, I love how you, Tehan, seemed to think that I would take credit for someone else's work. Obviously, after reading a few hundred words that I have written, you can be an accurate judge of my character and the type of person I am.

Now on a more serious note, I don't mind feedback about whatever I write because I have a very limited experience with writing. If you are, however, going to be rude about it then don't comment at all.

Sidenotes: Randeemy, when I originally wrote the list of characters I felt that there were already too many fics about the marauders and Lily, but if you want to feel free to write her post DH story. The Doctor, thanks for actually contributing to the challenge :).

*The point of this challenge is read about the histories of characters that are not really elaborated on. I didn't offer plot lines to follow because I thought that would limit people too much but if you would prefer that then you can post a reply. Also, writing the history of characters helps in developing the character later if you actually write a fic about them.*

To be honest, I don't think it is a bad challenge, your stipulations include important DLP qualities too. But we like Harry-centric fics here, and challenges with a bit more meat to them

This goes against the basis of DLP: constructive criticism. If we think something is crap, we'll say so, and we'll say exactly why. No feelings are spared. If you can't handle it, you're in the wrong place.

This "challenge" is crap because there is in fact no challenge at all. All you've said is "write a story about one of these minor characters". That's just one step away from saying "Hey guys, I have an idea! Wouldn't it be cool to write a story set in the Harry Potter world?". The "challenge" is far too broad.

    Have to agree with Taure.

This is not a challenge. Maybe you should define some rules? or outline a plot?

Taure, I understand what you're saying about no feelings being spared, but perhaps I worded that incorrectly. What I meant was if you have something to say, then say it but don't resort to trying to demean me...implying that I'm going to steal someone else's work or that I have a pea sized brain is not going to change anything. If instead someone offers suggestions as to what I can do to change the challenge then I'd be happy to listen. As far as the challenge being too broad I see what you mean now that I look back onto it and I'm working on changing it right now.

New and Improved Challenge...I would edit the first one post but for some reason I'm not able to see the edit button

In a one shot, elaborate on the life of a minor character in the canon story and explain what caused them to be who they are today. The fic should include at least one other character of your own choice and how they influenced your main character. (This character can be anyone, from a canon character to one of your own imagination as long as they had a significant impact on your "main" character).

Use one or more of the following phrases:
    • "...he was dropped on his head as a baby."
    • "I always knew he was different, ever since the time..."
    • "Has he always been like this?...Yep, ever since he walked in on..."
    • "Have you been raiding Snape's underwear drawer again?"
    • "God damn it, that's the fifth time this week!"
    • "...is that a mask, or is that your real face?"
Or answer one or more of the following questions:
    • In general: What was their family and family life like? (brothers/sister, how close were they?, etc.) Do they or do they not like Harry Potter? Why or why not? How do they contribute to society after DH? What lasting affect did the final battle have on them?
    • If muggleborn: How did their family take the news of them being magical? What affects did discovering the wizarding world have on them? Did or did they not have to overcome prejudice?
    • If born to a magical family: What is the families' view on blood supremacy? Does your character support it? What are their views on Hogwarts? Are Voldemort's ideals good, bad, or conflicting?
Any other suggestions would be appreciated...I know it's not much...

That's definitely a more interesting challenge. I may try a Poppy Pomfrey + "Snape's underwear drawer" fic in a week or so. (I'm under threat of letter bomb from one of my early readers to finish my H/F fic before I get distracted again).

    [Edit: fixed a typo.]
