Dark but Lightsided is the lamest cop out of a genre ever. None of that lame toeing the line shit, he should just be fucking evil. To Hell with all of those sheep in the wizarding world and his so-called friends. They're LACKEYS in my fic, not equals.

Here, here! I quite agree. I loathe dark but light fics. Its a cop out, its contradiction, its bullshit. If you touh the dark arts, you ae evil, the wizarding world will hate you, that's the end of it. I hate the self rightous 'I'm doin what needs to be done by murdering countless human beings, but im not evil' Harry.

Dark doesnt mean evil but yeah, if he's killing people, even Death Eaters, he's pretty hardcore.

How do you figure? The fact that something is dark rather than light, by definition, is something on the negitive end of the spectrum. If its dark, someone somewhere considers it evil. Evil is an opinion of course, but anything dark is considered evil. I'm not saying light cant be used for evil, or dark used for good, but the spell itself i still dark/negative/evil, or light/positive/good. Using the crucio curse to stop a murder might be noble, but the spell remains firmly under the 'evil' label, aka dark aka negative. A pain curse is by its very nature destructive and inherantly evil. Conversely, a levitation charm can be used to kill someone, but the charm itself is not evil because of this fact. The judgmental connotation of the word evil is the problem, as some who are happy to consider themselves dark can't bear to accept the fact that some rihtly consider them evil as well. They are different words for the same thing with different social connotations. I have yet to see one 'dark but not evil' fic whrein the authr wasn't going out of their way to convince the reader there was a difference. They are delusional and in denial.

Why don't you guys skip the foreplay and just say what you're thinking:
'If you can use magic and you're not killing somebody, you're a pussy.'

Well that's your opinion. Dark magic to me is just another branch that is destructive, yes, but still just another branch. Of course, if everyone thought like that then there wouldnt be dark and light magic, it'd all just be called magic. Meh.

we DONT say it because we DONT think it and its exactly this sort of idiocy that turns me off to a LOT of stories

not true and you see that in nature... magentism is the only example i come up with off the top of my head... the arctic and antarctice being positive and negative respectively of the earth's magnetic field...how IM perceiving what your saying is that we should consider one good and the other evil... seems kind of foolish to me...

The Dark/Light thing in the Potter books is ridiculous. Those filthy muggles and muggle-lovers deserve death. They're contaminating our gene pool! Not to kill them would be to allow wizardkind to die in their stead!

no need to kill them all actually.... just a good portion of them so we out number them... then we enslave them.... that is a MUCH better solution

I like dark but lightsided harry fics... But not the cop out ones. I like the ones where he just straight up pimps the wizarding world via some creative way of saying "fuck off" like in Lord of Azkaban by Padfootjr...

But Dark! Harry who is still boys with Ron and Dumblefuck annoys the hell outta me.

    And its true.

What many people fail to understand about the world is that there is no pure good or evil, but there ARE infinite shades of grey in between the two...

JKR goes to great lengths to make her readers think that the distinction is critically improtant and rigidly defined. She freaking goes as far as to say GOOD and EVIL is IN YOUR BLOOD. Wft is that? If I didn't know better, I'd totally think that JKR was an Aryan supremacist.

If you look too hard you quickly get annoyed by the racial messages and political bullshit she's instilled in her books. Too tired atm to write it all out, but there was a good breakdown on one of the major sites last year

That's nt what i'm saying, I'm saying evil is a concept used to describe the negative AKA dark. Rather than extending evil to include the negative pole of earth, and saying 'thats silly', you should instead reverse it and realize I'm saying the very wod is sily, but such as it is, the word evil applies to all that is dark and that making the distinction between dark and evil is sily, needless, and only aplies when you've moved the characters moral code part way down the negative end, but won't go all the way because of not the characters 'views', but rather, because the author draws certain moral lines personally and decides to bind the character to this regardless of what readers want, or even despite what may be realistic.

DS- Dark magic being a branch does not negate the fact that the word evil applies (in he context of magic, HP or otherwise) to it by someones definition, and the fact is that as an author, you are not labelling the fic for your own amusement, you are labelling it for the convinience of the reader. Specifying Dark but not evil is not acceptable as a label because it assumes and indeed forces your the author's) definition of what is evil or not evil. Evil is a subjective moral opinion, and if you do label it such, you stand the large risk o it being mislabelled. If your character uses dark magic, they might also use light magic, but they are dark wizards (or one of the various combintion titles, like sorcerer).
This is slightly different from the dark but not evil issue, dark but light is simply a factual error, or misrepresentation. Dark but not evil can run the slim chance of hitting the mark with every reader by not crossing their moral lines, but Dark but light/sided is just incorrect.

Back to evil, as i said, dark certainly is a branch, i dont disagree, and it is certainly a valid branch to use, but the fact remains that that entire branch with no exception will contain magic that is by someones definition 'evil'. A light spell, equally valid, is without exception considerd by someone to be 'good'. No dark wizard, opposed to light magic though they may be, will label a light spell 'evil', nor will anyone, no matter the way is used, call a dark spell 'good'. Not even the dark wizard would. The dark wizard would certainly find it a valid magic to use, but he/she would not call it 'good' (in the moral sense).

I'm not sure if that clarified or confused my stance on the issue, but I reject any claim that this is simply 'my view'. I came to this stance by rying to be objective, I have no bias towards any branch, everything is valid to me, with no excepions. Whatever gets the job done, labels are unimportant. Being stubborn in an attempt to reject the label evil because you don't like what it represents to you (or others) merely clouds your perception of the matter, and you fail to see things as they are and as they are percieved by others. All opinions are equally wrong. There is only the big picture, and there is only magic. Everyone who sees otherwise isn't seeing everything. Hoever, knowing how to properly use labels like evil when dealing ith fic labels is crtainly all of the mislabellers ou there should learn how to do. As well as stopping the self insertion...

I hope that all made sense, I'm jus posting that as is.

Actually, it just says Dark!Harry for my story not Dark but Lightsided even though he is on the side of the light. The only morals my Harry has that if they throw a killing curse at him, he has the right to throw one right back.
