I've read all of his 23 posts and the thread "tao's tao thread". I'm not good with poetry/vague philosophy but I think I could beat,

    "Tao doesn't have a name.
    Names are for ordinary things."

The "How do I make an outline" thread of his doesn't help me since I already have a clear idea of what's going to happen. I did read all the advice threads and stuff on how to write dialogue etc, which was very helpful considering that Vernon actually smiled words at people.

Mine was a weird, abstract, tragic romance between the giant squid and the Ford Anglia.

Mine first own work was a Fire Emblem insert that I based on a sorta fanfic that I also contributed some stuff too that was on gamefaqs.

The whole ordeal was pretty convoluted. I keep the story around in case I ever want to go back and finish it.

    A Four Letter Word

I had literally no idea this was still around. I will have to reread it, but I'm pretty sure Harry was supposed to find out that every time he takes a girl's virginity he receives more magical power. McGonagall was going to explain this revelation to him in the second chapter, and he was going to inevitably start banging everyone from canon.

There were probably others, but I do vividly remember this being my "first".

Oh, man, I wish I could still access it. I wrote really terrible self-insert Yu Yu Hakusho fanfiction on Quizilla. I've tried to find it for the lolz but no such luck. Did anyone else use that website back in the day? It was a terrible format for fanfiction, but for some reason I read a lot of (really poorly written) stuff there...

I think my first was a Pokemon/Power-Ranger crossover. And James Bond was involved...somehow.

Heh - some Perry Rhodan (German scifi, some say the original from which Roddenberry took most of his ideas) self insert, back when I was 12 or so.

    Hmm...
I guess, in a way, I started one in middle school. My friends and I were TMNT fans and I had come up with a pretty detailed plot, but I wanted to do it as a comic (or it might be more accurate to say I never saw it as anything but a comic). I can't draw, so my friend was going to do the panels. I think we all know how most collaborations among teens work out, so I need not say any more about that. It never even occurred to me that I could, you know, write it the fuck down in lieu of doing it in comic form.

I had no computer at the time, my handwriting (cursive, printed, you name it - it's so bad even my fingerprints come out illegible) looks like garbage, and writing anything longer than an addressed envelope really bothers my hand for some reason. Thus, even if writing it out (even in script format) had occurred to me, I would not have relished attempting to do so. It wasn't until... probably right before Doom came out that the family got a PC.

That was long before I knew fanfic was actually a fairly common thing... I didn't read fanzines, and there was no real internet where people with neither shame nor dignity could share what they'd written. ;)

    After that?

In the early 2000s, I was writing my first legit fanfic, Harry Potter of course. It had one thing in common with all of my other stories: It's not published.

The 5th book came out while I was still fiddling with it, so it was changed to be a post-OoTP fic, and had McGonagall contacting an old acquaintance in the U.S., behind Dumbledore's back, in order to secretly send Harry, a few close friends, and one unexpected tag-along (Pansy) to an unusual boarding school in the states, a sort of magical military academy, for some real training.

It reached approximately 81,579 words of disjointed, out of order, scenes before my brain woke up and said, "Wow... this behemoth is quite a big pile of shit." Many key points in the story have since become HP clichés that I'm probably better off not having contributed to.

On some level I was probably aware it wasn't exactly a masterpiece, given that (despite the story being serious) I gave it multiple endings, with each one being deliberately more outlandish than the last.

For better or worse, the only dubious pieces of fiction I've actually made public are on this forum.*

Edit: This might be the longest post in this thread about a fanfic no one ever saw.

(*Or told to people, in person, in the form of well-crafted -if casual- lies.)

My first fanfic was an other boy who lived story where Voldemort used a bonding spell to mark Harry's twin as the prophecised one after sensing Harry was more powerful. Too many cliches so I abandoned it. Since then I haven't had anything go beyond initial planning.

Hmm, first fanfiction.. This takes me back to 17 years ago when I was a wee sprog, only 9 years old. In school we were given the task to write a short story. I wrote a Heroes of Might and Magic 3 story that was horribly shitty.

My first fanfic was something I actually never posted online, so it probably doesn't count. It was supposed to be about Future Trunks crashing his time machine in the real world and saving it from an incoming nuclear war.

The very first thing I ever wrote was a wonderfully sappy fix of the Cho kissing scene in OotP. Because, yes, I was Harry/Cho shipper before it was cool. Since PoA, in fact. Take that, hipsters.

I kind of lost that file though, and it was never posted. Other than that, I started writing and was awesome, so I see no reason at all to delete my very first posted attempts (H/G romance).

Well yes, because a German doesn't put ink to paper without knowing it is grammatically spotless and has enough plot structure to withstand a battery of 100mm howitworks.

There’s the first fanfiction I ever wrote and then there’s the first fanfiction I ever published.

The first one started as a sort of fancomic in the back of my school notebooks, eventually degenerating into the sort of script-writing idiotic 13-year-olds like to post in FFNet. It was about Yu-Gi-Oh/Yu-Gi-Oh GX, an OC who was Atem’s wife and Bandit King Bakura’s sister, who later hooked-up with Judai in a really serious relationship. The amazing thing is, despite such a ridiculous premise, it actually did made a twisted amount of sense. I think maybe because I put so much work into the backstory. It doesn’t make it any less cliché or Mary Sue-ish, though. And I was nine.

The first fanfic I ever published is a Naruto fanfiction. I was thirteen-years-old, and it was about the tried and true Naruto-is-abducted-into-ANBU-and-gets-turned-into-a-weapon plot. It was surprisingly popular, mind you, and I pumped out 8k and 10k chapters a week when I could be bothered to write. My stroke of genius was writing it in Spanish since I don’t think I’ve seen that plot used in my fandom anywhere else, and making Shikamaru the protagonist who tries to get Naruto out of that shitty place via ill-defined political bullshit. Oh, and the fight scenes. I’ve always been very good with fight scenes, and those were always my best parts, and they never EVER were less than 1k words.

You know, the plot and foreshadowing were actually good enough I’m currently re-writing it (very, very slowly), and will simply replace and update the fic when I’m done. My main problem was too much ambition, high concepts, and not enough writing ability. It’s actually rather embarrassing the absolute GULF of difference there is between my just-turned-13 chapters, and my nearly-16-years-old chapters. The lack of consistency hurts.

    It's here: http://archiveofourown.org/works/3839626

I literally wrote it for Avatar Kinkmeme. It's a foot-fetish smutfic featuring Aang and Toph and you can read it to see how awful it is and how awful my writing was.

The first fanfic I worked on was a rewrite of the Star Wars prequels that would follow a more Greek Tragedy sort of path- Anakin truly being a great man and sympathetic character but falling to the deceptions of much smarter, evil men. Then the cartoons ended up doing that for me.

The second was an inter-movie Star Wars tv-show idea about a family of speeder/starship mechanics who join up with a robotics manufacturing guy whose family was wiped out by the Empire, and how they end up joining the Rebellion.

The first fanfiction I wrote and posted... is still out there.

A HP-OS about why Peter Pettigrew went dark. 14-year-old me had some strange ideas and it's got more telling than can be good for anything, but yeah.. Someday I'm goint to rewrite it.

My very first one was one I wrote for my local library's creative writing competition. It involved my friends and I becoming Power Rangers (Though we were all red rangers) and we were all apparently Ninjas as well. Suffice it to say, I didn't win.

My first official one that I put on the internet was Harry joining Britain's Got Talent after being kicked out of The Wizarding World. It's probably still on my MySpace (If only I knew my login details). Funny thing is though that due to the release of the Now You See Me 2 trailer, I'm actually half tempted to work on it and make it some sort of crossover.
