She's right though. I was rereading my copy of the HPB and came across this. Looking back, I have to admire her subtlety.

"Harry, lean into the pensive. Don't fall in now, easy does it. That's right...bend over...bend over. Perfect! Now tip your head in and lose yourself to the memory."

    Ding ding Ding!!! Another winnah!

Yes, that's precisely what it was.

One has to question her timing and placement in this announcement.

Imagine if she'd made this "groundbreaking" announcement at a Scholastic event where hundreds of parents and their children were in attendance. Somehow I don't think she'd have gotten all that warm a response.

JKR:Oh, and I'd like to announce something. Dumbledore is Gay
    Audience:*dead silence*
Parent in Audience: Ex-excuse me... did you say Dumbledore is Gay?
JKR:Oh yes... goodness imagine the fanfiction.
Audience:*starts throwing her books at her*

NOOOO.. instead she makes it at a university where she's guaranteed a captive audience that are too indoctrinated in Political correctness to do anything except applaud her. If anyone had spoken out against her they'd be drummed off the campus calling them a homophobe. (god forbid you not LIKE homosexuals and their lifestyles instead of just tolerating them)

I'd have had more respect for her announcement if she wasn't acting like a total fucking coward on this matter.

Let her go before PARENTS and try and sell it. The fact is... this makes all that private tutoring with Dumbledore and all the favoritism and special favors that Dumbledore pulled off pretty suspect... especially with that comment about him becoming infatuated.

    I want to slap her.

This series had some tangible literary merit to it – just enough (just like Beowulf has some merit for being the epitome of the "superhero story", like Star Wars and LttR)!

With all this bullshit now... it's no better than watching television. Disgusting. "Think of the fanfiction" comment just makes it seem like she just wanted to fuck with us. She may as well have said Voldemort was really James under a polyjuice.

The thing that bugs me most now is that all the "dumbles is not gay" all sound like Homo-phobes because they are at odds with Rowlings view of the character. I don't consider him gay, when you read the 2000+ pages of a Magical Victorian England setting. It's natural to assume that like every other guy in that time period. Did anyone actually see this coming, other then wishful thinking? No. Considering that one of the major issues in the books is racial purity and such, it comes out of left-field to bring in a gay character, especially when it has nothing to do with the plot of the story. And really how gay is dumbledore if he only had a few thoughts about GG, that doesn't make him gay, just bi.

Of course it's no surprise that all the gay-rights advocate groups are applauding Rowlings "courage" to out a major character.

    *kills self laughing*

If for no other reason than the innuendo-humor I'll have to re-read the books with this in mind.

The one thing that drives me nuts, though, are the people who say things like this:

And this would be different, how, if Harry was a girl and Dumbledore was straight?

This automatic assumption that homosexuals in education can't be trusted around children is more than a little suspect in terms of its foundation. This would be like assuming that electricity from a hydroelectric dam is what makes the water fall.

Am I one of the only legit HP fans who's excited about this?

I compare it to when Brokeback Mountain was released. I didn't care for the movie, just like I don't care for the Dumbledore pairing, but doesn't this new "fact" (because she's the author, I still hold that what she says is God's Word) open up other doors for our favourite slash pairings? Maybe slash isn't that popular on this site...I have lurked for long. Anyway, since Brokeback Mountain was made, it's opened up the floodgate for other homoerotic movies, proving that it can be done. Yupee!

Anyway, because she's acknowledged gay people in her world, that means they exist and other pairings are less far-fetched, which is great for me, I think.

I think Tolkien could have taken a page out of her book...

    And I know she's a mediawhore...her motives aren't important to me.

Sadly, this could've been a good post if you didn't sound so excited about it. You're right, it does add more validity to gay pairings in a way. The wizarding world isn't without homosexuality. But, I can never see Harry and Draco together. Your "favorite slash pairings" are not, and never will be a reality. Dumbledore may be gay, but I doubt many other characters are, if any. I think I'd have to peg Neville or Seamus if anyone as gay.

I banned you because we dislike obvious slashers who love to slap their views in our face. Quiet slashers, like Hana, are accepted. Intelligence is also a key to this.

Perhaps if you hadn't said you were a long time lurker I would've let you off with a warning instead.

Hmm I had yet to hear the words Brokeback Mountain, yupee, homoerotic floodgate, and Tolkien in a single sentence before so kudos I guess, though I'm fairly certain what you just stated made Tolkien's decomposed corpse (or dust) shudder.

Yes but only to use as toilet paper with which to wipe his ass.

I don't know if the theory has been stated yet but I am almost positive that somewhere between the 4th and 5th HP book, Rowling was abducted and replaced with some sort of identical (but shittier) clone. For what purpose? I don't know but I do know that she has gone bat shit crazy.

Why did she feel the need to make Dumbledore gay? It doesn't make any sense other than media-whoring. If she wanted to make some big pro-homosexuality message, then why didn't she include a gay character in her book directly? Why did she decide to throw this information (which was pointless, and did not aid in the evolution of the series at all) now, months after the books are finished.
The only logical answer is either, she was afraid of repercussions, or she didn't plan it out, and just answered the kids question with the first thing that came to mind and then tried to justify it.
I imagine the scene something like this

Kid- So did Dumbledore ever love someone?
Rowling- No you little twit that bugger was gay.
    Kid- (Stares)
Rowling- Er I mean yes well I planned it from the beginning you see I even talked with the director of HP because he coincidentally asked me this question out of the blue one day, for no apparent reason, and I told him that Dumbledore was gay and loved his archnemesis. So you see I'm not making this up, it was all planned out because I am that badass.

Kid- You could be making that up as well.
Rowling- You could be living in a cardboard box after I sue you for libel.
    Kid (walks away)

In all honesty though I'm not pissed that Dumbledore is gay, I'm pissed that she is changing events from books to suit her publicity, when she has in fact shown no literal evidence of Dumbledore's sexuality. If she wanted to say all these things why not actually write them in? First the extended prologue which she tells what everyone is doing, but states she didn't want to write because it took away from the mood, and now this.

My second peeve was already stated and its that she turned Dumbledore from one of the few characters with substance into a cliche. He went from being the flamboyant eccentric wizard to a gay wizard. Whereas before I attributed his odd choice of robes to his mental stability, I now am forced to consider the other option with no written proof to support it.

After this, nothing this lady says will surprise me. Don't be surprised when 3 months from now, when HP sales drop a bit, the shocking secret of Hermione's sex change operation will come to light. Or should I say HERMAN!! Dum Dum Dum.

Edit: Now I'm fairly new around here so I got to ask: was that the fastest banning on DLP?

 Damn, one under a minute and this bitch after a single post, is there another purge in the makeing?

Anyway, this all has gotten me thinking: How would Dumbles react to this? (If he were a real person, and living at that.)

    Rowling: Dumbldore . . . your gay.
Dumbledore: I believe I have said it is healthy to have a joval attitude. <twinkle>
Rowling: No, I mean you like to suck a dong.
Dumbledore: Bong, my dear. And I don't have to be a legilimens to know you do so more than I ever did in the 60's. Not the healthest of habits, my dear author.
Rowling: No, you see I have decided that you shall have the distinction of being the first headmaster *snicker* of Hogwarts to come out of the closet.
Dumbledore: . . . Many headmasters have been in and out of closets at Howarts. They are great places for coats, my emergency supply of lemon drops and, unfortunately, hormonal students. I've had to burn my share of unfortunate coats . . .
Rowling: No, I mean you're gay. As in homosexual. You would drop the soap in prison and might just enjoy it.
    Dumbledore: . . . What?!
Rowling: Just think, you'll be an insperation for members of the gay and lesbian wanting to teach our young children everywhere . . .
    Dumbledore: . . .
Rowling: You're so happy your speachless!!!
    Dumbledore: . . . AVADA KEDAVRA!
    *Thud*
    Dumbledore: Stupid muggle.
Harry: Headmaster, you won't believe what there saying about you in . . . oh bugger.
    Dumbledore: Harry?
    Harry: Uh, yes Professor?
Dumbledore: Are you wearing an armored butteplate taken from a suit in the hallway over your robes?
    Harry: . . . Maybe?

    LOL Good one.

Deviating a little from the topic (cause we are repeating ourselves now), I personally thought Dumbledore was asexual, ie uninterested in sex with anything. All that mattered to him was his quest. Its the same way that I view Voldermort. Both rose in power at the expense of all other pursuits.

If JKR had done that I would have given her some respect. Instead I'm now wondering if she's going to bring Voldermort out of the closet as well...

I had a dream last night where I saw Dumbledore kissing Lupin's hand. This whole business is starting to rub off on me, apparently :)

I agree with Dumbledore being asexual, though I thought of him being far more outgoing in his youth. Defeater of Dark Lords, powerful Wizard, he would have had witches at his feet. I imagined he grew tired of it and relegated himself to steering the Wizarding World in which direction he thought best.

Voldemort though-for all his thoughts being bent on world domination-I thought he had something for Bellatrix.
