I haven't seen a Visual Map of the Harry Potter Fan Fiction Community, so I decided to draw one.

I'm sure I have missed quite a few sites, so feel free to update or edit the map.

A nice start. I hope you don't mind a few comments:

Spatial representations are most interesting if there's a notion of size and connectivity. (Otherwise, a table or list is a better format). Here, you mostly just link a bunch of things back to the center, which isn't as useful as it could be. Grouping archive sites according to themes (pairings, say) might be more productive. Also, perhaps you could have the sizes of the boxes reflect something, e.g., the logarithm of the number of stories in the archives or the weekly activity of the forum.

I think you mean it to be "fanficauthors.net"; it has an (informally) affiliated forum http://ladyimmortal.net/harrypotter/index.php that grew out of the now-defunct fanficauthors.net forum.

If you're going to include yahoo groups, then you might want to consider various LiveJournal fanfic alliances (I'm thinking the group with Ella/Deadwoodpecker, Kezzabear, and a handful of other H/G writers; another is the various writers in the Sober Universe), some of which are as active in the aggregate as CaerAzkeban.

http://www.phoenixsong.net/ is a notable absence from your list.

You might want to consider Potterfic Weekly (http://www.potterficweekly.com/) and its associated forum as part of the fanfic landscape. They have a popular fanfic-associated podcast.

As far as HP is concerned, Spacebattles.com is just a few inactive story discussion threads and a solitary "recommendations" thread, which is largely just a discussion thread for one user's fics (the twat can't be bothered to make his own story discussion thread). Its contribution to the fandom doesn't warrant listing next to, say, DLP.

    Alpha Fight Club?

Thanks for the suggestions. I've never even heard of Phoenixsong.net. I'll do as you suggested, taking in mind the size and the pairings.

I've purposely placed DLP and and Ginny Potter on the opposite sides of the map, and intended to create a background of black fading to pink, but I don't know how with paintbrush.

I know there are tons of Livejournal communities around, but they usually have notorious reputations (for me) for having long bouts of inactivity, or suddenly being taken off Live journal without warning. The reason mostly is because of the written content in their stories, usually smut.

I also forgot astronomytower.org, which has a similar format with portkey.

Yeah, fictionalley once was or perhaps still is one of the most important fanfiction and fanart communities solely dedicated to Harry Potter.

    Other large sites are
    http://thequidditchpitch.org/
    http://www.fanfictionworld.net/hparchive/ aka hpff

Smaller sites, dedicated to certain pairings or settings or only partially dedicated to Harry Potter:
    http://www.phoenixsong.net/index.php
    http://owl.tauri.org/
    http://www.hpfanfic.net/
http://sycophanthex.com/ - its subsites are still active
    http://checkmated.com/
http://www.veritaserum.com/ - Forums and Fanfiction archive
    http://archive.skyehawke.com/main.php?list=2

I have twenty or more sites on my list which aren't active anymore. If you are intending to go for a "complete" chart, I suggest this http://forums.darklordpotter.net/showthread.php?t=1031 as a source. And you'll still miss all the slash-only sites...

Also, you misspelled PatronusCharm. You can use things like the alexa rankings and member counts as initial ways to gauge relative sizes of these sites and communities.

Also, don't forget about livejournal and TheFanfictionForum (TFF).

Try GIMP or a trial of Paint Shop Pro.

Astronomy Tower is just one subsection of Fiction Alley, under which also lie Schnoogle, The Dark Arts, and Riddikulus.

There are a lot more, of course, but most of them are defunct due to lack of stories. Maybe not ones devoted to (multiple) major pairings, like Portkey, and, sadly, abominations like Ashwinder, but I've seen two or three Harry/Pansy sites/groups pretty much die from starvation.

LOL, in my search for MOAR sources of HP fic, I even ran across a site devoted to triofic, and I think I can see its ribs...

On the other hand, I just checked Just As Sane As I Am and it's definitely still alive.

Pointless? Nah, pointlessness is in the eye (and free time) of the beholder.

Nah, I don't think it's pointless. I have lots of free time, and I'm curious if there are stories out there that are worth reading.

Maybe there's another HP/Dresden Files fic out there that's at least as good as Shezz's Denarian Trilogy, or there might be author with the same caliber as Joe, Nuhuh or Vlad. (My expectations are very, very low)

Another purpose for creating this map is so that new authors will know where they can post their stories aside from fanfiction.net and reach out to new readers.

Shame on me for not linking to it when I mentioned it, even if it is mostly dead... and, perhaps, mostly scary.

Heh, I didn't see your edit before I made my post. Great minds?

EDIT: And that's because I beat you by a minute. Booya!

Actually, you didn't. Look again. :D

I'm bad about making multiple edits.

But sometimes I just can't help adding more to a post.

And if you do it quickly enough, sometimes it doesn't even show up at all.

But, as you can see, that's not the case this time.

Oh Warlocke... don't play dumb. I happen to know you're into that kind of stuff. :p

That was the second Link I posted. Just another url.

I didn't read anything on there for years either. I once started to submit something to that site, and they rejected a chapter, because I quoted the prophecy - and they only allow two lines of quoted text per chapter.

At the same time they didn't care for grammar and spelling and hosted stuff almost as atrocious as "My Immortal".

Meh. I found that site back in the day and even then it was dead on its feet. I read one story there, but it hasn't updated.

I wouldn't mind triofic so much, if Ron were a worthier person - and that takes a good writer with a complete disregard for canon. As it is, I'd have to take ViagRon to really get into it, because that feckless ginger putz makes me limp.

And now go figure out if I'm serious... :p

You have lots of free time? 12-11-09 is an important date don't you think? Why if only that date could be somehow related to something you could do that would help you get rid of your free time while simultaneously helping me get rid of some of my free time....

Interesting labor you've done there, aaltwal. If you still want to make fanfiction charts when you're done, I think it'd be interesting to do one showing the relation between HP fanfiction themes, pairings, topics, etc.

In other words, something sort of like that sexual fetish chart from years back, but more related to fanfic.

Though come to think of it, a distressing number of those fetishes do appear in HP fanfic... :awesome
