As a huge fan of Dexter (both the Showtime series and the books), I want to see a SerialKiller!Harry fic where his character is modelled on Dexter Morgan. It can be a crossover, or just a variant of the insane!Harry category; I don't really care which.

P.S. I know this is the challenge board, not the Fanfic search, but if anyone knows of such a fic already in existence, I would appreciate a heads-up.

One way to make it work would be to go with the Harry Moody idea, just obviously a lot darker than usual. Instead of learning to shout "constant vigilance" all the time, Harry gets trained by Moody to clean up all the messes ignored by the corrupt Ministry that forced him into retirement, etc.

The challenge would be to avoid just making Harry into Dexter+magic, the characters are pretty different.

There are a lot of stories out there where Harry kills the fuck out of a bunch of Death Eaters. I can only think of a couple where he does it behind a nice facade, and I neither one was very good.

ETA: Whoops, this has been posted a couple of times, and the Moody suggestions made by others as well. I don't think anything ever came of it (unless there are some real surprises coming in Lost Time), it's just a tough fit.

 

I started to write one, basic premise was that Dexter found out about the Dursleys treatment of Harry, set 'em up to get his special variety of treatment. Problem was he made one mistake - Harry'd gotten locked in the cupboard and he (somehow) saw what Dexter did to Vernon and Petunia

So, basically Dexter was stuck with a witness (gotta kill) who was the *reason* why he killed the Dursleys in the first place.

General idea was that Harry would pick up Dexter's 'Code,' and instead of having a blood fetish picked up a blood magic fetish (gotta love those stupidly powerful blood wards) later on in life. Lots of 'I'm not getting caught' death and destruction, etc.

And then I realized that what I had sucked, and I gave up.

*shrugs*

 

Is the story saved on your PC? It could make a decent one-shot.

I had this idea last night while going to bed. Seems there's really no such thing as an original idea these days. I also thought it would be funny that Dexter could teach Harry 'The code of Harry'

 

Intersting idea. I too am a fan of the Dexter universe. It's interesting how such a sick person can be so lovable.

 

You know that is one cross I frankly never considered. Hmmm, but I do love Dexter. Actually I'd be interested in reading the fic described above where Harry witnesses the Dursley's deaths....that really has some promise. A good beta and that could be very entertaining. As as said, perhaps a dark oneshot with some vision into the future. (it might be interesting if Dex chooses to give his same speech to Harry as he did to the kid in season one, a somewhat incomplete idea of a code...and where Harry might take it.)

I am rather curious about how a cross would work with Harry stumbling upon Dexter and how he might view the man's curious code. As per end of season two, if Dexter does have a dark angel on his side, it might not be best if Harry were to try and upset the homicidal Dexter's plans.

I did read a Dexter/ CSI cross once which was entertaining...but it was only a one shot.

 

I know there is a BTVS/Dexter crossover or three lurking on TTH fanfics, one where Xander is Dexter, but I read it a long time ago when my standards were much lower.

Never seen a HP/Dexter except Malicious Intent, and I haven't seen an update for that in a while.

 

The only way I see this working is if Harry/Dexter does not only kill death eaters because that just gets boring real quick.

The reason Dexter is such a good show is that in the premise he is brutally "fair" about who he kills. The challenge would be to write such characters on the "light" side.

It might even be interesting to write this post-Voldemort where a Harry who has seen too much lives to rid the world of injustice or some BS in that trend. Of course this doesn't stop him killing people from the "dark side" as well I'm just proposing he does not do it exclusively.

This way you can actually create some conflict where his friends are hunting him, for example make Neville a respected auror like his dad. This way you could even set up a twist where Neville goes to Harry for help, either immediate help with the case or just a soundingboard.

This is something I'd really like to see done sometime but done well.

 

The Code of Harry is in WBA, and looks like a good start, if anyone is curious.

Personally, one of my favourite parts of Dexter was Doakes' reaction to the 'creep' and how everyone else loved him, so if there was a Harry/Dexter fic I would want to see either Doakes or similar.

 

I have to agree Doakes was always an interesting character.

"Why is it in a building full of cops Doakes in the only one who gets the creeps from me."

And I agree with the Post-Volde, Neville as Auror angle...and of course they'd try to rope in Harry, savior and chosen one, to try and help them track this new evil-doer.

And you're right, only killing Death Eaters would get old. It'd be nice to see Harry attack some of the hypocrisy, perhaps strike back a people who allowed themselves to 'profit' off the war with Voldemort. (Not war profiteers mind you but perhaps people who used the war as cover for their own misdeeds.) You see that in wars and other natural periods of destruction.

Post Voldemort also allows for a Harry that may be a little jaded. He sacrificed to 'save the wizarding world' and he lives to see the same mistakes being continued.

On another thread I think they were discussing, or challenging rather, to see a fic that contains the idea from Dark Knight, "You either die a hero or live to see yourself become the villain." I think that this sort of Dexter concept scenario expresses that perfectly.

 

Could someone post the link to Malicious Intent and the Code of Harry? I tried to search for them on the forum, but came up empty handed.
