Not sure what to call this, but I was surfing around FF.net and I found some stories that were about a Harry who had been trained from a young age to be a fighter coming to Hogwarts for some reason after defeating Voldemort.

Now, the first chapters of these are usually fairly interesting, but then a few things happen:

First, it usually becomes a power trip where Harry goes around defeating everyone who fights him without any effort, he's in top condition, brilliant genius, etc. It's sort of the counter Angsty-Emo! Harry.

Second, he's usually socially awkward; he's bad at smiling, he uses military lingo strictly, and doesn't know jack about girls.

Thirdly, almost ALL of these were H/G, and the romance goes somewhat like this.
Ginny: "Hi! Oh my god you're Harry Potter! I fantasize about you!"
Harry: "Really? You're the first girl I've ever seen, I guess I love you!

Then it just becomes pitiful. I got the feeling they got so sick of those angsty Harry/Snape stories that they made a superpower Harry who can and does hurt Snape, badly.

But this could actually be an okay idea if it were written without these kind of stupid faults. Some guidelines I thought up:

    1. Harry was trained to help defeat Voldemort.
    2. Voldemort is preferably weakened, as is Harry, and Harry is going to hogwarts to be in an environment where there is lots of magic to help him recover. Also, he has a mission at Hogwarts.
    3. Harry does not become friends with Ron/Hermione/Ginny on the train; in fact, it would be sort of interesting if he accidentally made them mad.

Some Ideas that could be used:
    1. Harry has some sort of handicap; not allowed to defend himself/use magic because of being weakened; constantly sleepy because of low magic, yadda, yadda.
    2. A Progidy in one or two fields of magic but not necessarily all-powerful.

    As for the plot...
Idea #1: There's a spy/recruitment network of Death Eater students which Harry has been designated to track down. (Sort of mystery...)

Idea #2: Something has been attacking students, and the Aurors/Army/Whoever decide to kill two birds with one stone by having Harry recover at Hogwarts/ Defend the students.

First challenge so criticism is appreciated, as are ideas.

Its feasable for Harry Potter, trained for a decade to defeat Voldemort, to go to Hogwarts. He wouldn't learn anything, it would be pointless. More than that though, with it being public knowledge that he's defeated Voldemort nobody with any sense would believe that he was just going to Hogwarts to "finish his schooling", or "to meet his own age group" or even "to be in an environment where there is lots of magic to help him recover." The ministry would have its own places for its Aurors to recover.

How can Harry defend the sutdents whe he's not allowed to defend himself/use magic because of being weakened? Or would you want this fic to become a pile of utter shite and have him use swords because they're teh shiz or perhaps guns because no wizard can create a shield that will block a bullet. Will he use martial arts because one should never just rely on magic?

In general, its not a particularly good challenge. The idea of taking this plot, not making H/G and actually him having a purpose at Hogwarts is actually quite good. But its just not good enough to actually be anywhere near realistic.

Trained!Baby Harry always seemed like a somewhat more complicated way of character bashing to me, which, while sometimes amusing, does not make an interesting read after a while. It could be interesting if Harry was a dark lord/third side who was trained from birth and has never been to Hogwarts, but has a network of spies in Hogwarts to look after OotP, but that type of plot needs a justifying end. Without Harry having some sort of goal or the story having some sort of underlying plot, all it is is a generic WIP that will get abandoned after 5-6 chapters.

I am still waiting for the one story where Harry is sick of all the military stuff and refuses the challenges that he gets set. He goes to Hogwarts for some mission and takes it as a holiday. It could be a great humor fic, where everyone expects him to save the day and he constantly wriggles out of the situation. Like selling polyjuice with his hair to other students, so that nobody knows which Harry is the real one and he can't get blamed for anything.

    No link and no story.

The challenge just made me think about how the cliche military Harry sickens me, the Harry that has some super abilities and weapons always sits around and flaunts his coolness for the fanfic-girls, finally flirting with the weaslet and being her puppy. Therefore I thought this might be a better idea for a trained Harry that doesn't get any action anyway.

How about a slight change to the original plot. Instead of a Military!Harry why not a Mercenary!Harry.

-Merc!Harry is trained from a young age as a Mercenary, not to defeat Voldemort
-Dumbledore hires a group of mercenaries (which includes Harry) to protect the school

He's not there for classes, or to recover but to help protect the castle and students from outside threats, Death Eater, Ministry take your pick.

Thanks for the link. That is somewhat similar to what I was talking about. But I was envisioning a more calculating Harry, not worried by things like dying innocents. In other words he much more colder, calculating and distant. Not all that powerful but a lot more skilled and inventive in a dual, and has no qualms about using any trick in the book to win. Socially he's very cold and distant. Any one threating him would be calmly and ruthlessly 'discouraged'.

The only reason for him to fight Voldie is to protect the castle or students if Voldie attacks.
