KenderCleric’s Challenge #7 – Untainted Magic

Summary:

Harry Potter, Ron Weasley, and Hermione Granger had delivered a devastating blow to Lord Voldemort. Now, with his horcruxes destroyed and his soul too tattered to create another the Dark Lord’s options were limited. The “Golden Trio” had grown far stronger than he would have ever suspected and given the right circumstances his life could truly be in danger.

Emboldened by Voldemort’s once again mortal condition the Order of the Phoenix along with Harry, Ron, and Hermione began a devastating campaign against the Death Eaters. The Dark Lord’s forces suffer defeat after defeat and their numbers dwindled to a mere handful compared to their former might. Everyone knew the next battle would be the last.

Yet, the final battle never came. Voldemort and his forces seemed to have vanished. Harry grew restless as he wondered what the Dark Lord was up to. Hermione went into a frenzy of research and Ron, well Ron just tried to stay out of her way. It wasn’t until McGonagall arrived at Grimmauld Place that the Order had their first break. Sibyll Trelawney had made her third true prophecy.

With a clue as to Voldemort’s whereabouts and intentions the Order flew into a frenzy of research. Contacts throughout the magical world were nearly interrogated for any information that would help make sense of the latest prophecy. It came as a shock when the break they had been hoping for appeared in the form of a tattered old journal procured from a muggle library.

It had been a total fluke that Remus had been directed to the nondescript book. In truth, he couldn’t recall exactly what he had said to his friend in the small bookstore in Seattle. All he knew was that his friend had been reminded of this strange journal in a library on the other side of the country. No one among the Order was going to look a gift horse in the mouth though.

The journal had read like fiction at first. It spoke of a shipwreck’s only two survivors and their journey through a land that time had forgotten. The author, a windowed father who had been marooned with his son, had painstakingly recorded their journey and discoveries on the island. According to the book the island was a continent unto itself and was inhabited by both man and, unbelievable though it may seem, Dinosaurs.

The near-utopian society the journal described had many doubtful as to its existence. It wasn’t until obscure references to a similar society were found in a musty tome amid the Hogwarts Library than anyone took it seriously. The tome omitted any reference to Dinosaurs, but did speak of a utopian society where “Magic remained untainted, and powerful beyond modern wizard’s comprehension”. Considering the tome was dated at nearly 800 years old the Order could only imagine the nature of this untainted magic now.

Suddenly everyone was all too convinced the island was indeed the destination of the Dark Lord referenced in the new prophecy. Harry, Ron, Hermione, and the Order wasted no time in making preparations to find the island and hopefully halt Voldemort’s attempt to claim the Untainted Magic.


The Challenge:

Write a crossover fiction between Harry Potter and the original book Dinotopia. The story should begin sometime near the summer of ’98 as most of ’97 (Harry’s 7th year) would have been used for the horcrux hunt. The basic story should revolve around Voldemort seeking out the island in an attempt to claim “the Untainted Magic” found there. This magic can be an artifact, some ritual that can only be performed there, whatever.


Rules:

• Only 6 “outsiders” from the HP world are allowed to make it to Dinotopia – 3 from each faction. Harry and Voldemort must be among them.
• The “Untainted Magic”, whatever you choose to make it, will be exceedingly hard to locate/use/etc.
• Using magic on the island should lead to unexpected results. You decide what and how severe they may be.
• The “Final Battle” should take place on the island.
