KenderCleric’s Challenge #5 – Way Away (One-Shot)

Summary:

Harry Potter’s life has not been what he would call acceptable. In the wake of Sirius’ death and the revelation of the Prophecy he finally opens his eyes. He doesn’t believe in the idea that a Prophecy rules his life. The idea that a boy is meant to defeat a wizard like Voldemort is absurd in his eyes. Dumbledore’s goals might not be clear, but it has become all too obvious to Harry that his life means little to the Headmaster as anything other than a tool.

So, as his fifth year comes to an end Harry makes a decision. His life in the magical world is over and he’s finally going to live for himself. No more Dursley’s, no more Hogwarts, and no more Dumbledore. He’ll miss his few friends, but in the long run he knows he’ll be happier just striking out on his own and forgetting the nightmare of the past five years.

The Challenge:

Write a one-shot fic in which Harry leaves the wizarding world and the Dursleys based on the song Way Away by Yellowcard. The fic should focus on the memories and thoughts that lead Harry to his decision to leave and subsequent preparations and departure.

The Rules:

• Do NOT use the Lyrics of the song in the fic except as possible dialog when/if appropriate.
• The fic should begin sometime after the confrontation in Dumbledore’s office after the DoM event and end with a “walking into the sunset” type moment as Harry leaves behind the life that has cost him so much.
• Try to use events from the books that would provide imagery that corresponds with the lyrics of the song. It should be surprisingly easy.
• This is NOT a song-fic. It is a one-shot inspired by a song.

The concept for this challenge came to me as I was working on my own story. I was typing away and listening to some music when the playlist hit Way Away. I’ve always liked the song, but this time as I listened I began to consider the lyrics in relation to the Harry Potter story. It amazed me how easily I came up with certain scenes or visual ideas from HP that fit the song. After trying, and failing horribly, a couple times on my own to write this one-shot I figured I’d make a challenge of it.
