I always figured they were an undead/construct, using inferi and lethifolds. They likely are hive minded or mentally linked, able to share energy. So long as even one still exists, it is able to generate more of its own kind, as long as it can feed.
If my guess that they are a mix of inferi and lethifold, I wonder if a mix of the patronus and fire magic, could a spell to destroy them be made.

People think fiendfyre can kill dementors, so what about other forms of dark magic. I am simply thinking that the flames drive them away, potentially contain them. If the AK could kill dementors it would be more known of.
WHat about a transformed werewolf? IT's bite has dark magic, and it is is in a feral rage, any bad memories will simply make it angry. An animagus is able to keep their mind when transformed so a werewolf would be less affected.

I had this idea that dementors could harm horocrux, but what i demetors could be harmed be harmed by horocrux. if they are such an abomination, it might lead to mutual harm/destruction. If they are all linked, what would happen if they were fed multiple soul pieces? I like the idea with Tpm's death, it would drasticly reduce their numbers as tom is banished to limbo, they are sent with him.

Harry was protected from the dementors by the shades of his parents, so i wonder if ghost can help deal with dementors. THey have no soul to loose.

From the wiki, it implies there is no way to destroy them, but able to limit their numbers, and that they would eventually reduce. So if unable to feed, they will slowly die out. So if horocrux are like poison to them, feeding them a bunch, could help reduce their numbers.

the Veil would send them elsewhere, so great solution for dementors.

I wonder about phoenix tears and unicorns blood, any chance they would work.

I remember a fic in which the only way a dementor could be killed was through another dementor's kiss.

I like the idea that as destroying body of Dementor is not really hard (Fiendfyre, overpowered shredding either using magic or explosives, things like chlorine trifluoride (AKA thing that ignites wet sand) etc).

But it only results in angry Dementor happily regenerating its physical manifestation within weeks and hunting down whoever harmed him.

Also, it would explain why Dementors are not encased in something and kept in storage - they may drop their physical forms and regenerate elsewhere.

As Veil in DoM seems that something that would work I am unsure whatever doing this is a good idea, nobody would want Dementor 2.0.

I have no idea why feeding really happy people to Dementor would be supposed to kill it - it seems to be based on the idea that world is somehow fair what is a deeply flawed assumption.

It's based on the idea of a patronus. A patronus is a manifestation of pure happiness in the form of a protective spirit. The dementors are unable to stand pure happiness, and are driven away.

Eating the soul of a person who only had happy memories would be like eating a Patronus. They would have imbued their anti-force.

IS that right? Correct me if I am wrong but I remember reading something about how Dementors was drawn to Quiddict pitch in 3rd book because the collective exciment of the students was like a buffet to them.

Yeah, it's a complex thing. It's kinda contradictory, until you remember that it's true of a lot of substances that ingestion in moderation is nutritious and ingestion in excess is toxic.

Happy memories that are sucked out of a normal person with a mix of happy and sad memories feed a dementor. A manifestation of pure happiness drives them away.

Actually Taure, don't Dementors feed on happy memories? Giving them someone with only happy memories would be like giving them the Super Meal Deluxe.

THey should test and test those abominations looking for ways to harm, control and destroy them

Boggarts change to what ever causes the most fear, so what would a dementor get? Can they harm dementors as even they can have fear?

It would be cool if transformed werewolves, either potioned or not, could be used to harm dementors, animagus can resist their powers, would the rage of the werewolf be enough to allow them to fight this threat.

We all drink water, and many people enjoy alcohol. But none of us can drink an ocean and 500% proof alcohol will kill you dead. That is the patronus, it is too much or the dementors to take in at one time.

I've read a few fanfics where dementors apparently feed on the emotions from negative memories, which is why people are forced to remember them when a dementor is nearby.

Well, if Dementors multiply based on the despair of a large group of people then could it be possible to kill them if everyone is happy? So, theoretically, if post-Voldemort England is a utopia would the Dementors have withered away because there are no negative feelings to feed on? Of course, universal happiness is impossible unless you're mixing Happy Potions into the water and food supply so I guess they just appear at places like Azkaban.

It's funny how some authors say that using Dementors as prison guards is inhumane, but I was wondering if it's impossible to not have them around because of the mood surrounding prison itself. You could remove them from Azkaban, but there's no guarantee that the negative emotions/magic won't make new ones.

One imagines that, while the cheering charm can produce a temporary euphoria, it can't fake the kind of deep fulfillment of genuine happiness. Like Amortentia can produce obsession, but not genuine love.

Makes me wonder if Amortentia would work on a Dementor.

I suspect it only works on humans or beings similar enough to humans (goblins, centaurs).

I've always imagined the Killing Curse as having the best shot at killing a Dementor.

Disclaimer: I'm familiar with your opinion on how the Elder Wand works Taure (lets you cast perfect spells, meaning it's useless for Dumbledore/Voldemort/Grindelwald)

    That said: AK by Deathstick.

If we accept that dementors possess some kind of immortality, only a being of equal status may kill them - so a person with a horcrux.

A goblin-forged blade which has absorbed a unicorn's blood. Will only work if the person who wants to go dementor-hunting prepares the blade, because magic. We're told in canon that killing a unicorn is an act of great evil (or something along those lines) so you must taint your very soul in trade for the ability to kill dementors.

Those were serious ideas, time for some cracky ones.

Dementors are protected from deadly solar radiation by the ozone layer, just like everything else. Expose them to that radiation and they die.

Holy water. The power of Christ compells you! THE POWAH OF CHRIST COMPELLS YOU!

While performing the Kiss, the dementor is connected to its victim. Cast an over the top Memory Charm while this connection is up and you turn the dementor into nothing and its victim into a vegetable.

They can only be harmed by physical objects traveling at high velocities. Enter guns. Silly wizards.

We know of no instance of a dementor underwater. That's because they drown.

Expose them to a packed cinema during a horror movie night.

Carve those runes into their flesh: up, up, down, down, left, right, left, right, B, A.

"There may be another, more common way of repelling a Dementor, aside from the Patronus Charm, as Harry Potter disagreed with Professor Snape on the best method for confronting one when it was the subject of a report in his sixth year.[3] This implies that there are, indeed, other methods."

Found this on the HP wikia. I don't have my copy with me right now, but they referenced HBP. Can anybody confirm this as canon?

Also, a lulz method. Feeding them chocolate. Or a Dementor vs Lethifold fight.

Yeah, it's pretty much word for word as the wiki says: Harry has completed his essay for Snape, but is expecting low marks because he disagreed with Snape. Whether Snape's favored method is "more common" seems conjecture by the authors of the wiki, the book implies that there is simply another way, that Snape thinks is better. And with the whole theme of "Snape being a dark arts loving bastard" it's probably something more violent that Harry disagrees on principle.

On the topic of killing dementors, I have no big feelings about them. Dementors, like pretty much everything else in HP, are a plot device, and everything depends on how you use them. If your story is better with Harry killing dementors with napalm, go for it. If you prefer them to be indestructible, why not.

The main problem with most stories where dementors are killed is that there is usually no reason for them to be killed; it's just another tick on the list the author seems to be going through. Harry having unhappy childhood, tick. Harry going shopping, tick. Harry getting sorted, tick. And so on and so on until the story gets abandoned because there is no point.

Most of the times more than half of the plot devices introduced in a story are useless, and the story would be better off without them altogether. That doesn't mean they are bad in themselves.

There is some indication that dark magic can give one some measure of control over dementors. Dumbledore seems to believe that the dementors will side with Voldemort not because of any kind of political gain but rather out of some natural affinity they have with each other -- which one assumes either means that they're both "dark", whatever that really means, or something to do with Voldemort's horcruxes.

Could be they felt a stronger bond to Voldemort during his second reign of terror as he was spiritually closer to them - how much of his shredded soul did he have left in his regenerated body to distinguish him from a Dementor post-Kiss?

That aside, is it possible to Transfigure a Dementor? Change its pseudo-flesh into a matter more difficult to freely maneuver-- IE wood, iron. Stuff too stiff to bend without breaking, in the case of the former, or simply too heavy and solid to move at all. Then torch it. Or continue the Transfiguration process and turn it into a chest, an anvil, and sling it into one of Gringott's vaults until the process wears off - no misery or happiness readily available to feed on for days at a time, if not weeks if you go down deep enough.

Speaking of, what about shoving it into one of those doors? Trap it until it naturally expires?
