DLP, something amazing has happened to me. A buddy of mine, upon his departure to Afghanistan, gave me an old Mac iBook. Said he couldn't even log into the thing and didn't know what to do, really DGAF and told me if I could make it work I was more than welcome to it. After some boot-up magic and reseting the admin password I created my own user account.

Here's where I'm needing help. I've never really used a Mac before (I'm a PC guy myself, run Windows and I'm getting into Linux some), and I'm wondering what steps I need to take to get it pretty well functional. It needs some major updating, but it's not Windows so I'm lost. The Mac website isn't really a help since this machine is around 8-10 years old from what I can tell. I'm not looking to replace my main machine or anything like that, just gain a bit of knowledge.

Alright, what exactly do you want? Mac OS 10.2.8 is Jaguar. At that point, you can use the internet, but most apps nowadays require Mac )s 10.4 at least. You COULD upgrade, but I'm betting it would just slow the iBook down. Honestly, just stick with what you have there. I don't see what else you want. I have a Powerbook and an iMac from the same age, which I still use. What are you asking for? Fun stuff to do with it?

Yeah, I'm looking for some fun stuff I can do with it pretty much. I've only had it for about two hours and I really do want to get some use out of it, just for experience's sake. Basically all I've done to this point is slapped an GBA emulator on it and dumped a couple of my games from the originals and put Firefox 2 on it.

Alright. My advice is to google Geneforge, and download a demo of one of the Genforge games. The graphics aren't that good, (except for in Geneforge 5, but don't even try to download it, it'll kick your computer's ass) but they are a lot of fun, and have downright amazing storylines. The demo is pretty big, and the game (to purchase the full one) is cheap. I'd say start with Genforge 4, you should be able to run it.

Now, a thing about Flash: Adobe is a bitch, so if you try to run flash 10 on an old Mac, it won't work, and Flash 9 is too outdated for pretty much everything. So you're screwed on that count.

Do try my advice, though. Geneforge burned many an hour for me.

 

1. Find a suitable flamable material i.e. Petrol.
2. Pour over failbook.
3. Ignite the flamable material using either a match or lighter.
4. ???
5. PROFIT.

In all honesty, I would try and update the OS to the latest one it could support and make it an internet machine for torrents, legal of course, browsing etc.

 

It is at the latest OS it can support without problems, trust me.

 

Ignore the peons, Jenos, they're just jealous because they will never be as hip and cool as us Mac users.

 

You can bring your Mac completely up to speed by upgrading one component. Luckily, I have just what you need.

 

This. Sticking with OSX will be a pain in the arse because nobody wants to know about 10.2 any more.
Remember that you'll need to get the PPC version of Ubuntu/Fedora/whatever.

For people on this forum, yes, yes it is.

 

Apple is notorious for not really keeping up with legacy support, and the Mac ecosystem reflects that. I doubt that you'll find much recent software that's compatible, and even if some software is compatible, it probably won't run well.

Even though I myself have a MacBook Pro and use/like OS X, I would recommend installing a Linux distro if you want to get more life out of your iBook beyond the role of an internet-browsing (plus word-processing and the like) machine. On the other hand, that may be all you need, especially if this will just be a secondary computer.
