Well, this thread is fucking awesome and shall continue.

While not the first fanfiction story I read, Wastelands of Time was the first story I came across that blew my fucking mind. I have a thing for fairytale like stories (the last unicorn by beagle, for example), and Joe's story of the king and his flowers; how he had to give them up to save his people really clicked with me. It set the scene for the incoming bone men, and the sheer uncertainty of what was going to happen. So I'd have to tip my captains hat at Joe, because when I finished wastelands, I wanted fucking more.

Then there is Matt's Incorruptible. Bill summed up the astoria scene. However, what really got me was Ron. That is a Ron to write about, a fucking boss. He loses everything, yet, keeps going to help Harry. Then when he tells harry what happened at the burrow when they are in jail. Damn, to keep that inside, unveil it at the last moment, fuck, that is a Ron I want to read about, a true friend to the very end. It didn't hit me until Harry had his wand. I was like, shit, fucking shit. Definitely my favorite character in that story.

Enembee's first chapter of forests was a masterpiece. In my opinion, the best opening of any fanfic. You can truly see reality shattering around him. You can taste his insanity, the inescapable feeling of a breakdown waiting just beneath the surface, ready to break free. A fucking piece of art.

I don't believe it...I'm unwilling to accept that it hasn't been mentioned, so I'll apologze for missing it.

But...In Light of Silver Memories was...a masterwork. When DumbleHarry breaks down just how much of a rapestomp it would be if the magical world were called upon to destroy its Muggle counterpart.

    /goes to reread.

Nicolas Flamel has a pretty fucking epic moment in Sly Goddess' A butterfly effect where he verbally bitchslaps Dumbledore like a boss.

    A couple epic moments:

Thalarian's amazing fic (you know the one) when Snape turns on Voldemort, saving Harry's ass at the last possible moment.

Jbern's amazing fic (you know the one) when he turns into a Jaguar and mauls a daimon.

IdSayWhyNot's Clock on the Face of Hell where Harry tricks Filius into going into the past with him.

Ginny stabbing Harry in the back by killing Tonks in the Power of Hogwarts by Prabal. Still memorable though I forgot most of the rest of the story. Also features a kick ass scene with Fleur as a flaming bird.

We'll All Fall After The Yule Ball when Katie gives Harry a handjob just as Parvati and Padma walk in. Yeah, self-promo.

In the end, I've read only 1,000+ stories so really, there are far too many memories to even remember. If that makes sense. I'm sure it does to some of you.

Bit awkward, got In Light of Silver Memories by Taliath and Harry Potter: Dark Memories by blueowl mixed up. One is amazing and DLP-grown and the other shitty slash. So calm down on the hate guys, simple mistake, mmkay? Mmkay.

I need to make sure, are you talking about this fic? Because that must be the first time I see someone saying it's a "piece of crap".

I just read it after seeing Celestin's earlier post, and aside from some overuse of "amusement" it wasn't a bad read at all. And considering it was published in '06... yeah.

Taliath's fics have now passed into 'unreadable' or 'generic' territory for me. It was an awesome moment at the time, namely because most of us had been exposed to Muggles curb-stomping wizards.

So it wasn't exceptional writing skill, but circumstance that made that scene stand out.

Maybe I misunderstood the purpose of this thread, but I haven't been taking anything in here as a "recommendation." We have both the Library and Almost Rec for that.

    From the OP:
So yeah. Sometimes something that you realize (later) is crappy still sticks with you as awesome because of how it struck you the first time you read it.

To use a non-fanfiction example, this book is not that good. But it will forever remain in my heart as special/awesome because it's the first book I read that I really, truly got into (I was in 7th Grade). It sticks with me like very few other things I have read and it's crap in comparison to most of what I've read since then.

I thought that was the sort of thing we were looking for here, and most of the posts here seem to reflect that. If people want to use some of the comments here as recommendations that's awesome, but it's not the point.

    So, let's see...

I don't know which story it was, but I recall a scene from somewhere that had Death Eaters going around torturing people. One thing they did was Imperious the father of a young girl and force him to rape his daughter. They released him from the curse at the very end so he was fully aware at the moment when he "finished" in his daughter. It's still one of the few torture bits from HP fic that bothers me.

Shifts by FernWithy was one of the first good fanfics that I read. I can't remember if it was in Shifts or the sequel, Shades, but there was this scene where Remus and Tonks had sex, then the next morning Remus was being his usual whiny self and going on and on about how he shouldn't have done that, Dora is too much younger than him, etc. Then Tonks gets really pissed and tells him off, explains it was her choice too, he can't be always whining about everything, it makes her feel bad having caused him this much grief over nothing, etc. I just remember the scene because it was when I realized just how sorry of a person Remus could be sometimes -- I overlooked it in canon for the most part.

Various parts of Joe's work stick with me too. Bits and pieces of awesome scenes from way back when I was reading it on his Yahoo group as he posted. ...I think. There's at least half a dozen little things.

For some reason the thing that sticks with me the most about Rosswrock's Power of Time is that Harry made Neville an amulet or something so he could go to an arcade while he was visiting. Dunno why that bit stuck with me -- it wasn't good or anything, maybe just weird?

Santi's BWL story is my favorite HP fanfic I think. Normally I'd say it's hard to pick a favorite and I need to do a Top 5, but Santi's fic is the only one I've read completely through half a dozen times. I haven't even read some of canon as much as that. So that entire story tends to stick with me apparently.

Shezza's Denarian series. Much like Joe's work, there is more than one scene in here that sticks with me. But the first one that comes vividly to mind is when Harry is chasing one of the Denarians and it's a trap, and he jumps down into this hole that ends up being full of landmines. He gets knocked around for a bit then comes out of it missing fingers. So he jams some sticks or something in to act as temporary fingers and allow him to have a better grip.

There's more I'm sure but... sort of tired of typing. :)

Really just wanted to add In Light of Silver Memories to the thread, but I'd have to second Taure on Awakening Power as one of the really great ones that helped pull me into fanfiction in the first place. Of course, it's hard to stand the test of time but in its day it was awesome.

Have to agree with you on those two but I have to add another one, well actually what I'm talking about is the collection of scenes that I have come to call "memories of the dark knight" but in particular, the memory "Black Noel" simply because it more than any of the others showed just how far gone the evil Harry was.

Way back before I joined the site and was a regular fic searcher on fictionalley: I was reading... I was like "The Scorpion King" or "The Scorpion Mage" or something. I don't remember if it was a crossover or just with lots of original content but about somewhere 30,000 words into the fic I had a sudden moment of realization:

    I wasn't enjoying it.

    Why? I asked.

So I took a look at what I was reading, and it was obvious.

Harry Potter (in that fic) was an incredibly horrible Mary Sue and he could Do No Wrong.

I dropped it then and there- and soon found DLP and began refining my tastes. But I'll always remember that moment and what it felt like, and it's served as a sort of 'subconscious mary sue detector' when I'm reading new fics- because even if I don't consciously go "yeah, this character is winning at everything too easily", I get that sensation. It's pretty reliable actually.

Anyone have a list of stories that explored this idea?

Not in detail. I allude to it in In Essence Divided, though.

Rise of the Wizards by Teufel1987 will get there eventually, I suppose, but it's still hovering around the end of HBP.

    Yeah, fuck that shit :fire

Many of the moments that stick out for me come from (unsurprisingly) the Stranger Trilogy. Pretty much the whole thing is one long crowning moment of awesome for me. If I had to pick out three, though, it'd be the assault on Lundy and the Harry/Voldemort duel in Unholy, and the Harry/Grindelwald duel in Promised. Epic stuff.

Shezza's Denarian Trilogy hold a busload of my most favorite fanfic moments, but my top pick is this scene
I remember being in line for my visa interview and being nervous as heck, then I remembered this scene (especially the bolded part) and suddenly I was grinning like a fool. I passed the interview.

In the first part of GreenGecko's triology, Resonance. When Harry kills Voldemort (before making a Muggle out of him in Revolution[?]), I don't think they even cast a spell. Harry comes down the stairs, catches Voldemort's eye, and the entire battle takes place inside their minds. Really new and interesting at that point.

Which reminds me of another fic I can't remember the name of where Occlumency takes center stage, becoming the weapon Harry uses to win, after a year or so of training from Snape. He does it by luring Voldemort totally into his mind or something like that during the fight, which is the dangerous part of Legilimency. Voldemort assumes (aided by Snape and Harry) that Harry is awful at Occlumency, and doesn't hesitate to delve fully into Harry's mind. When he's totally immersed, Harry snaps his mind shut and it kills LV, IIRC.

There was a similar occurence in a post-OotP fic where Snape and Harry have a row in the kitchen of Grimmauld Place, and Harry does this to Snape (though non-fatally; it just hurts him). This second instance wasn't as well done, but still an interesting take on Occlumency.

"Price of a Savior, Second Edition" has a scene that has always stuck with me. I don't even remember the rest of the story now.

But I do remember that Arthur is written as being a lot more into Muggle objects, and a lot less understanding of their dangers.

He got a hold of a jet engine "Furbotan" and anchored it in the backyard, then cranked it on. Ignoring what was happening around him, he pushed it to full-throttle, and garden gnomes, dirt, etc. all got sucked into the engine and shot out the other side, with the garden gnomes ending up in the next county.

A chapter later, a newsreport from the Daily Prophet reported the Auror's confusion on the raining gnomes.

I have no idea why, but the mental picture of that scene has always stuck with me.
