    >I certainly have nothing against gays and lesbians, and they have as much right to their >own brand of erotica as I do to my icky guy on gal stuff.

I don't even think this political correctness is appropriate when the material is written mostly by hormonal challenged fangirls and frustrated housewives as you mentioned.
It gets really cute when the author's profile has this chain letter about tragicly oppressed gay, colored, religion, houseelves, whatever to establish some kind of writer agenda/image.

Personally I have 4 major theories about the actual authors

    1) Lemming effect of a subculture where its members write slash to identify themselves as different from the "uncool" rest.

    2) to separate themselves from mostly male reviewer's critics about their writing abilities because their ego is too fragile to deal with these opinions.

    3) Mary Sue insertion where the author imagines herself as a girl Harry Potter or whoever without explicitly naming himself a her in the story and then live out their weird sexual phantasies with virtual characters or film actors.

From a motivation pov there's not much difference to the males who write harem crap or a certain corny harmony style(mostly a certain circle of older males or couples?).

Both groups can be identified by radaslab's style.
Dementor fics which suck any kind of fun out of the genre.

But the fundamental difference between these genres and slash is that most slash authors just don't give a damn for any kind of character definition, logic or motivation.
They have no respect or understanding of the HP universe and the consequence is the destruction of the character's substance.

    4) Just trolling out of boredom.

    >This is partially the fault of the site admins, since, with a little bit of coding on their >part, one could avoid it entirely.

I came to the conclusion that it's intentional. More page accesses to find something worthwhile in the sea of slash spam.

P.S. I think we're pretty close to the fate of the Supernatural fics where you've stopped looking because almost everything released is slash. Really sad.

I know. I know. Not only is it a double post and a bump, but it's also a necro post.

Stay the ban hammer. There is a method to this madness. Least, I think there is. If I was truly mad, would I really know it?

0-SlytherinGurl-0 has a blog that never got linked in this thread, and it's hilarious. He/She responds to reviews and ridicules slash fans.

Just thought I'd let you all know.

    (Please don't ban me *cries*)
