That sounds impossible. You'd hit a place where you need Surf and just get stuck. Unless you get lucky, I guess.

Yeah, I do. That's also a parody of the EB mascot in the background of the second panel.

Ah, EB must belong to GameStop because our used game monopolizer here definitely has the chubby bunny/princess/whatever.

I wouldn't. Look at some of that shit. Creature - Frog? Blizzard's effect?

Was this made by a five year old? You couldn't pay me to play that shit. I've made an Adaptus Astartes deck, a Space Marines deck, and an entire Bioshock expansion set, and that is not how you run a theme block.

For starters, everything needs to be Pokemon - [SUBTYPE], so that way you can run it like a tribe deck and also have things on the field that only affect Pokemon (for better or worse). Then you'd build a small collection of generic subtypes you could apply to every Pokemon, like Saurian, Avian, Amphibian, ect, so there could be further specialization in certain enchantments or card effects that only affect specific kinds of Pokemon. You could also just reuse the Egg Groups, but fifteen different subtypes is fuckoff enormous. It might not matter if we're assuming you're putting in every single Pokemon, though.

Secondly, we need to invent a new Effect specifically for Pokemon to allow them to evolve. It would probably be named "Evolution," because as far as I know there's never been an effect that was called that, and it would basically allow you to stack a Pokemon card on the field with another one (i.e. the Pokemon it evolves into) at a significantly reduced mana cost.

I would word it something like this:

And it would be listed on the card as "Evolution: [Pokemon It Evolves Into].

So you could play a Tyranitar straight from your hand to the field for it's full mana cost, which would probably be something in the six or seven-drop realm since it's a giant fuckoff Trample Intimidate stompey thing that eats mountains, or you could get it out on the field with four mana total over the course of three turns by evolving it from a Larvitar, because the difference in mana cost between a Larvitar and a Pupitar is two or three, and the difference in cost between the Pupitar and the Tyranitar is four. So you evolve Larvitar by paying two instead of dropping Pupitar directly onto the field, and you can do the same for Tyranitar, where three or four mana is the difference in cost between Pupitar and Tyranitar. The strait-into-play Tyranitar would also lack the abilities granted by Pupitar and Larvitar, which an evolved Tyranitar would retain.

So Evolution would be extremely powerful, but it's also risky, because you're putting all your eggs into a single basket. A single kill-spell or Exile would take out the entire thing, because the Larvitar-Pupitar-Tyranitar is treated as a single creature. It also takes time to set up, because each evolutionary step takes a turn to pull off, and your opponents can clearly see what you're attempting. Powerful Pokemon that are in the process of evolving into something extremely dangerous, like a Shellgon or Charmeleon would be high-priority targets.

You could also do interesting things with evolutions by giving abilities and effects to lower-evolution Pokemon that are functionally useless to them, like Deathtouch to something that has Power 0 or Annhilator 2 to something that cannot attack, but if you succeed in evolving it on the field, that ability transfers onto it's evolution, so now you've got something that's already strong to begin with that also now has some powerful abilities. But if you dropped that creature the 'normal' way, it would not have them.

Once we get the mechanics down, we could start building specific cards, like a Pokecenter spell card that lets you tap X mana for every creature you control to remove all negative counters on them, or the Sanctioned Duelest global enchantment that limits all players to six creatures (players that have more when this card is played must choose which ones to discard to the graveyard until they have six) and prevents players from being targeted directly by spells or abilities unless they have no creatures left on the field.

Then we could start having fun, like working in Evolutionary Stones (play the card, select a card of matching mana color that a creature you control Evolves into and place that card in your hand. Shuffle your deck), playing with Pokeballs allowing you to pull Pokemon cards from your deck at random into your hand, and so forth, and so on.

I would totally give Aegislash an equip cost, and allow it to be attached and detached from another creature you control like a piece of equipment.

Actually, I could probably make some pictures of a Pokemon set if anyone was interested. It might be fun to post.

It's called Evolve, not Evolution. A technicality I'll admit, but one I'm prepared to hide wildly behind, especially since precise wording is everything in M:TG.

I'm actually going to come up with some of these. Now I'm thinking about it, and I can't stop. I may end up coming up with a whole deck.

Hmm... I hate to say that Raine is right about that set, but she is. Half of that set is fucking broken - hell, I'd maindeck four Pokedexes in any control deck and it would be insane!

Also, having designed sets myself (I got really, really bored a few years ago and designed MtG expansions for the Chronicles and Legends trilogies from Dragonlance), I'd argue that Raine's version of Evolution is still overpowered in today's metagame, particularly if the deck has any good mana acceleration (also, what would happen if the evolved creature was bounced - would BOTH creature cards return to the hand?). I'd throw in the additional restriction of tapping the creature once it has evolved and maybe having artifacts like X Speed to get around that restriction.

Make evolution similar to "x offering", but instead of sacrificing the creature, you exile it, but only pay the mana difference.
