No. Even the mecha scenes are boring - if you can call that "mecha" at all. The mecha fights take place in a separate dimension, and it's more like a boxing contest.

It has nothing to do with military mecha action.

 

Oh yeah, I completely forgot: anyone else watching Panty and Stocking? I'm normally not a fan of American animation, of which this show obviously borrows heavily from, but it's actually pretty decent and surprisingly awesome and epic at times. The humor is hit or miss (more often hit for me), and some jokes get run into the ground, but this show has had me cracking up more than any other show recently.

Its not supposed to. The mecha in Star Driver are of the Super Robot variety, so less "mechanical" movements and crazy special attacks are to be expected.

But yeah, even taking that into consideration the fights aren't too spectacular or fist-pumpingly awesome. I think this has to do with how the show is more like a magical girl show than a robot show. Considering that the writer worked on Legendary Girl Utena, this comes as no surprise.

In fact, if anyone here enjoyed Utena or Princess Tutu then they should give Star Driver a shot. No guarantees that you'll like it, but there are a lot of similarities between the three shows-Utena in particular-that there's a good chance you'll enjoy it.

 

This thread is pretty awesome. I've got plenty of new stuff to watch. However, I do have one complaint. I just went through 7 pages, and I didn't see a single mention of Cardcaptor Sakura.

 

It's probably because we are (mostly) grown ass men/women, and Cardcaptor Sakura is aimed mostly at young boys/girls and pedobear.

 

If your honestly into Card Capotor Sakura, then I recommend you watch Tsubaka Chronicles. It's basically the romantic/action crap that CCS was and it's got a lot of characters from other anime the creator made. As for the second half of FMA, I don't think it went downhill. I think it just didn't go where a lot people wanted it to go. Viewers wanted Ed and Al to fix their tragic situation, but it ended up only getting worse for them. The movie didn't really help that get any better either. I second Gintama and recommend Higurashi No Naku Koro Ni. The anime was trippy as hell and I kept imagining Mion was gona kill me in my sleep. I also recommend Gantz.

 

I finished the original FMA (took me forever, but was worth it) and I was a little horrified at the ending...it was seriously messed up.

Every death in a steampunk of our world powers alchemy in the FMA world? Very eerie. And Ed and his father end up in our world because the door took them here? Poor Al, all left behind...
On the other hand, in the original Ed gives up his alchemy ability to save Al, which is a happy, satisfying ending that seems like a fair trade.

Ore No Imouto.
This was was really fun to watch. It wasn't engaging enough to be charged through all at once but it was a cute, fun 20-minute episode once a week. The main characters, Kirino and Kyousuke, are quite realistic and complete with flaws. There isn't much in terms of a plot, though.

MM!
MM got pretty repetitive and some things were just plain weird (like the pervert belt that turns odd sexual preferences into blasts of light/power? ...what.). It was quite amusing before it became dull.

Yosuga No Sora
I was attracted to this because the art is so pretty on the cover. But the animation isn't that amazing (maybe because there just aren't many opportunities for animation) and they reuse clips (not as bad as Naruto, thankfully).
Twincest is almost cute in anime...but not when the guy bangs everyone else, too. The anime is made from an eroge game (with bad ratings of its own...why, producers, why?) and set up in arcs, which is a little mind boggling. And Haruka meets each girl in the arc, and they end up having sex about 10 minutes later (okay, 10 minutes on the film, but still.) The ending was really abrupt, with an almost-drowning before the main characters moved overseas.

Togainu no Chi
It sounded super awesome and action-packed, but Keisuke acts like a lovesick puppy and the fighting scenes are short and dull. Most of the anime seems to be wandering around and talking. I'm not surprised that it used to be a BL manga :l I didn't follow this past the 4th episode, does it get any better?

So I actually gave Bakuman and whirl and it was quite good. It's nice seeing a character that has such a ridiculously lofty goal (getting an anime by the time he's 18 ) and yet approaches it in such a level-headed and thorough way. Most of the time they're just screaming, "I'm gonna be the Hokage one day!" and nothing comes of it.

It's also had me attempting to draw again. It is definitely shit, but I've always found it to be an interesting way to pass the time. As such, I plan to read more manga to get a feel for the different styles (Fakku doesn't count. lol)

 

Awesome thread is awesome. Most of the things I'd rec are already listed, but there are two that have had no mention so far-

Noir. It's not as good as some of the things already mentioned, but it's alright. The end gets a bit weird though...

Also, Juubei-Chan. I've only seen the first half or so, but it's pretty good. Cracky and ridiculous, but good.

 

Just wondering, how much of it have you read till now? I liked it in the beginning as well... but now, there's just some stuff I personally find hard to stomach.

 

Yeah, Magical Girl series in general aren't exactly the sort of thing that overlaps much with DLP's demographics. The only Magical Girl series I would really think would have much appeal to DLP is Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha, and that's because it's a character-driven Seinen that was specifically made to appeal to adults.

By the by, I would have to recommend said series to anyone who hasn't watched it. It starts off a bit slow as the first couple episodes go to establishing the basic premises and such, but once it gets going the series is substantially awesome. The characters are interesting, the fight scenes are nicely done, and the plot stays moves along at nice pace. Weep in shame as you realize that a nine-year-old girl just did something more badass than you'll ever manage in your entire life.

 

If by read you mean watched, then up to the latest one (episode 17). I actually don't read manga that often (Fakku doesn't count, lol) so I can only really comment on the anime.

I feel that it starts to go a bit down hill after they complete Money and Intelligence, though it's hard to pinpoint exactly how. Many small things, rather than big issues. Still pretty good, though, and I still get quite excited for every episode.

Magical Girl series that's good? Does not compute.

I may actually give it a try anyway. I've been pleasantly surprised by a series before, and hopefully this'll be able to also.

There's actually a new Magical Girl anime being aired this season, Madoka. It's being written by the same person who wrote Saya no Uta, for those who know what that is. It's pretty god damn dark. Also very enjoyable, if you can make it to the end of the third episode.

Yea... watched. I normally only read that stuff, because it's easier for me to find the manga scanlations on the net that subbed anime episodes. Where in the story is episode 17, actually? I know that later on, I get especially annoyed because of unnecessary, illogical, and confusing time-jumps all around.

Mashiro has just started working as an assistant for Nizuma, while Takagi has writers block.

There hasn't really been many time jumps so far, though about a year has gone by in the series, so I'm assuming that you're much farther ahead.


Also, if you're interested in watching the show and can't be fucked to try and torrent them (heathen!) then you can use animeseason. They're really decent about advertisements and have a pretty extensive library.

 

That... is pretty early in the beginning of the manga. It's like chapter 22 or so in the manga, and I'm up to chapter 117. Though thinking about it now, the time jumps could simply be a result of bad translations... Idk.

I've gotten into To Aru Majutsu no Index. The first season was pretty good, but the second season doesn't seem quite as strong.

Also, there's this new one called Infinite Stratos. As of this moment there are only four episodes out. Basically, it's a stereotypical high school/mecha/childhood friend/harem story.

Summary

The story itself is pretty weird, but the fight scenes are pretty good.

Another new one for 2011, Fractale. It's only going to be 11 episodes long, but it looks really nice so far.

So far there have been three episodes. The first two didn't really reveal to much about the story, but the latest one started to bring the story together.

Also, I don't know if anyone mentioned this one yet, but Baccano! is another good one. It's really interesting.

Wolverine is the second part of the Marvel Anime releases on Animax! Channel. It's decent, but the Iron Man story line was much better. I really dislike the character design for Wolverine in the story. It doesn't really suit him.

 

Has anyone watched Bakemonogatari? It's one of my favorites. It's about a high schooler named Araragi who encounters various mythical creatures and monsters (which are usually possessing one girl or another girl... heh but it's not a harem anime). Of course he takes it on himself to help them.

The best part about this anime is definitely the characters and their interactions. Lots of new animes these days use old boring stereotypes like "moe" or whatever. So it's refreshing to see awesome characters like Senjougahara or Kanbaru. If you don't mind listening to long dialogues, they can be really funny. There's some awesome action too, sure, but it's not really the focus of Bakemonogatari.

It also features Shaft's crazy art style which might take some time getting used to :awesome
