@Rents - Yes to both. Pureblood families perform entire rituals, when they kill their ancestors - before the birth of a new child - to ensure, that the magic stays in the family. Sometimes it doesn't work, and from there comes muggleborns.

For example - Malfoys ancestor was walking in Australia, when suddenly, a dropbear decided to eat his face and use his skull as a shitter. Malfoy ancestor dies painfully, without the ritual being performed. His magic goes AWOL, and finds a new body to inhabit - and because fate is a bitch, that someone turns out to be Hermione Granger ;)

And, in the example above, it turns into a legal battle, about what to do with Hermione. Is she a part of the Malfoy family or a beggining of a new one?

@T3t - I was aiming for something completly different. There isn't a limit on how much magic one person can cast, etc. There is a limit on how many magic users there can be. I.e. there can be ten of Dumbledores duelling ten of Voldemorts, and it isn't a problem. But it would be immpossible for the eleventh Dumbledore or Voldemort to exist.

It may be more interesting with requirement that sacrificed individual is truly willing to participate. Society with something like this would be more interesting than completely unstable mess where everybody is trying to murder others.

I would include something similar to the Roman concept of Pater Familias. A head of an entire family that can decide who can have children and who have to die, for that child to be magical.

In this world, muggleborns are a rare occurance, mostly happening when a wizard or witch dies in a accident, and their magic goes AWOL. That also means, that muggleborns are a very sought after prize: if a muggleborn marries into the pureblood family - and the family to which muggleborns magic belonged previously does not find him - than that pureblood family gains a completly free new magic to add to their own.

Jibril, that makes me wonder about places like St. Mungo's and Azkaban. Would Neville's parents be kept alive? Would Harry go looking for the two muggleborns who received magic from his parents? And with the Voldemort war, I imagine there would be an influx of muggleborn. Gah, now I want to read this.

    How about
xxxx- In a world where Muggles supposedly rule the magical population. A slightly ruthless Harry grows up on the streets with a desire to rule over all. However no one realizes that Grindlewald, Dumbledore and their student Voldemort are behind the scenes. Dead Lily, and Marauders.

This list is great and it has got me working on an idea I had posted in one of the old bunny threads.

Basically 0001 Harry in 5th year meets 0220, 0221, and 0222 versions of himself and at Taure's suggestion only he can see them... at least at first.

    Great work everybody!

@BitMyFinger - Azkaban would be the same. Magic isn't tied to soul but to life, and so long as the Kissed individual lives, his magic stays with him.

Nevilles' parents are a very special case. Because they are insane, then Frank can't performe his duties as Pater Familias. Therfore that title goes to Neville, who must wait untill his of age to do anything with it. And he will have to euthanize his parents or kill his grandmother when he decides to prolong the Longbottom family.

As for St.Mungo's I have a very disturbing idea. What about witches and wizards who are poor and don't have any relatives (very unlikely in this world, but it can happen)? Well, they are euthanized by speciall staff at St.Mungo's, and their magic is sold at a special auction, to the highest bidder - usually a wealthy pureblood family, that thanks to that, increases it's magical potential and amount of progeny.

As for Harry seeking magic of his parents - "Well, Mister Potter. As there wasn't anybody to preserve their magic, it probably went to some muggleborns. If they are in United Kingdom, they are probably at Hogwarts, a little younger then yourself. Have a nice day."

xxx - Another contestant wins the Triwizard Tournament and does not return. No one is certain what happened but the character is assumed dead. Harry still knows Voldemort is alive because he can see through the Dark Lord's eyes and feel his emotions. Leading to:

A: He informs Dumbledore, but they make plans to reveal Voldemort without Cornelius' knowledge rather than look like fools in front of the Wizarding World.

B: He neglects to inform Dumbledore, as he's not sure what is going on. He realizes how serious the situation is after Arthur is killed at Nagini's hands.

xxx - After Harry tells Dumbledore the truth about the link between his mind and Voldemort's, Dumbledore decides to inform Harry of the prophecy.

xxx - Harry is made a prefect during 5th year. Ron and Harry drift apart because of Ron's continued jealousy. He seeks Hermione's help after sixth year but they do not bring Ron along.

xxx - The necklace Draco gives to Katie kills her or the mulled mead kills Ron or Slughorn. Either way, Draco is found the culprit and sentenced to Azkaban.

xxx - Draco is trapped in the Vanishing Cabinet. The resulting battle (and Dumbledore's death) does not happen.

xxx - Umbridge does not find Dumbledore's Army and has no idea that they are secretly meeting.

xxx - Fred and George don't give Harry the Marauder's Map. He does not know Sirius Black is after him or see that Peter Pettigrew is walking the halls.

xxx - Remus bites Snape during Harry's third year and he's sentenced to Azkaban or put to death. Anti-werewolf legislation passes and Snape cannot return to Hogwarts for Harry's fourth year.

xxx - Triwizard Tournament is held elsewhere. (Not sure if this has been mentioned).

xxx - Triwizard Tournament gives an extra name from Beauxbatons and Durmstrang in order to even the score.

xxx - Neville is a supremely gifted wizard at a young age.

xxx - Ron (or Ginny) is the only Weasley that doesn't land in Gryffindor.

xxx - Fenrir Greyback fights against Voldemort and the Ministry on behalf of the werewolves. Snape really is a vampire, and there are tons of them.

xxx - McGonagall sees potential in Harry and teaches him Advanced Transfiguration at a young age. He becomes an Animagus behind her back by third year.

xxx - Harry chooses Ancient Runes/Muggle Studies/Arthimancy class instead of Divination.

xxx - Griphook kills Hagrid and takes Harry hostage as soon as he enters Gringotts before first year. Goblin rebellion starts. Dumbledore and Flitwick team up to infiltrate Gringotts in search of Harry.

xxx - Romilda ensnares Harry with a love potion and only Ginny Weasley knows the truth.

xxx - Everyone is an Animagus after a little training, and some develop the ability before Hogwarts.

xxx - Harry can speak to all reptiles, not just snakes. (Might have been mentioned)

xxx - Wizards can control the weather.

xxx - Magic incantations, wands, potions, etc. are forbidden, though wizards exist and are capable of wandless magic, which can be improved through practice. Dumbledore wants to liberate the magic world without hurting Muggles; Voldemort wants magic for himself and his followers so that he can control the world. The Ministry of Magic is only dedicated to keeping the Statute of Secrecy intact, controlling and removing Muggleborns from their parents, and stopping the spread of magical words.

xxx - There are no Muggles. Everyone is capable of magic.

xxx - Squibs actually do have magic, they just can't use wands.

Few from my old plot bunny. I could miss them on the list because it's very, very long. :)

XXXX - Albus "Al" Dumbledore becomes an adventurer that travels around the world, or rather is running away from his home, to forget how he failed his sister.

XXXX - Bellatrix Black obsesses over a different powerful wizard and wants to become Bellatrix Dumbledore.

XXXX - Headmaster Riddle loses his job after his affair with a student, seventeen years old Lily Evans, is discovered. Years later he meets Harry Potter and suspect that he may be his son.

XXXX - Draco Malfoy is the best friend of Harry Potter. That decision costs him his family (he is disowned) and his wand hand.

XXXX - Serial killer Tonks. She uses her power to impersonate her victims and lives their lives till she gets bored with it.

XXXX - Luna Lovegood is a magical Carrie. She snaps at the Yule Ball and kills dozens of students before Dumbledore manages to contain her wild magic.

XXXX - A dark wizard Alastor Moody. Being evil actually works for him much better than being good. He has no scars or other injures. Very rich, good looking and popular with women fellow. Paranoid as ever.

XXXX - Magic is slowly disappearing from the world and only Dumbledore and Voldemort can discover why and how to stop it. All they need is to start working together.

XXXX - Harry Potter is just an actor who plays this role to fool the society. The truth is that Voldemort won and rules the world from behind the scenes.

XXXX - It takes two people to cast a spell. Witches have magic, but only wizards can use it.

I can already see a scene from that world: Voldemort sips tea with Dumbledore, when Harry barges in and demand more money for his role, all because of all that shit he has to deal with ;)

xxxx - Magical golems replaced house-elves as the predominant servants in wizarding culture several centuries ago. Most wizarding children learn to craft small-scale golem's at home, Hogwarts teaches classes on advanced golem-crafting and enchantment for the everyday life.

xxxx - Golem-battling replaces quidditch as the national sport; on-the-fly transfiguration, carving fresh runes to repair/replace damaged ones, change the field to your favor etcetera. Whoever's is still functional at the end wins.

xxxx - Magic is a very recent thing and Dumbledore and Grindelwald were among the first wizards in history.

xxx - In the Second war Voldemort transformed Europe into a warzone. Muggles fed up evacuated the non magical people and nuked it. However the wizards are immune to radiation and because the muggles didn't really want to destroy the continent a lot of the died, but for the muggles it was inhabitable. So Harry and his friends started a new country they cleaned the air, water with druidic rituals, had the goblins and dwarfs destroy all the underground stuff. Demolished the big cities and stuff. Harry becomes something like King(immortal because MoD or PS). A few decades later somebody develops something that cleans radiation. Muggles began to move back. A few hundreds of years later Harry is still the King, the country has a standing magical army the wizards and muggles lead different part of the society. All around I think about this as an Utopian dimension.

And cue 001 Harry falling in to an inconvenient dimensional rip.

xxxx - There is a spell that allows Wizards and Witches to switch bodies. Some do it for fun, some do it to escape old age. Voldemort used it to terrorize Magical Britain. Your magic comes along with your mind, so if you switched a body with a muggle, you would still have magic but the muggle would not.

xxxx - Ariana lives instead of Aberforth. Albus spends much of his life trying to find a cure for her chaotic magic and finally succeeds, revolutionizing magical treatment at St. Mungo's.

xxxx - Albus discovers dimension-hopping in his youth, and uses it to fix all of the mistakes his older counterparts had committed after returning home.

xxxx - Instead of fixing his would-be mistakes, DI-hopping Albus uses the foreknowledge to create a one-wizard empire on his home world.

xxxx- Accidental magic is far more dangerous and it takes longer to settle down. The most common reason of death is raising children and hogwarts is considered one of the most dangerous places on earth.

xxxx- Wizards are extremely melodramatic. Muggleborns are frowned upon because they don't play along.

xxxx- There are four great Britain wizard clans, based on the four houses. A wizard's family is chosen by the sorting hat.

xxxx- Wizards never formed an united goverment or school. They are organized in aquelarres, alliances of thirteen individuals/families that keep the fact they are magical secret from anyone outside of them. Magic is taught by the family and spells and potions are highly guarded secrets.

xxxx- Wizards actually admire muggles and try to emulate their society. Too bad electronics don't work in places with magic and they never get quite right how things work (think of an Arthur Weasley situation)

xxxx- Wizards are expected to reproduce with magical creatures. The more dangerous the creature, the more respected is the wizard.

xxxx- Wizards are considered saints by muggles. Magical schools are branches from different religions and wizards are trained as members of the church. Voldemort was an heretic.

xxxx- Student's are rotated among houses every year, with special courses depending on the one they are in.

xxxx- Gryffindor left the school instead of Slytherin.

xxxx- The founder's ghosts still teach at Hogwarts.

xxxx- A wizard's soul is bonded to their wand.

xxxx- Squibs have their own secret society. They call themselves adventurers.

xxxx- Dark magic is the most common branch of magic. Necromancy, blood magic, curses, etc
