It's different in one v one: if you try to rush with Zerglings, you'll be torn apart by a Terran player who walls off the ramp with a Barracks and two Supply Depots. By the time you start getting Roaches in a threatening number, he'll of either spammed Hellions or gone straight for a Medivac/Marine drop on your Drones.

One Thor/Dropship would also screw you over.

If he even gets one Siege Tank deployed behind his defence, your Roaches would be useless.

With Protoss, they'll either go straight for Void Rays, or Zealot/Stalker spams. (Oh, how I loathe Stalkers/Zealots!)

I haven't really worked out the Zerg yet, since I'm mostly a Terran player: upgraded Hydralisks are a pretty good Stalker/Marine counter: with a Queen and a good Vespene stockpile, you can crank out Hydralisks and Zerglings fairly rapidly. If you get Banelings, too, Zealots would be pretty much screwed.

    Here's some general help:

Scout early to see if he is going to be walling of his main. If he is building something, then attack the worker that is building the supply depot/barracks. It is pretty hard for noobish players to deal with it properly.

If he walled in, make a fast expansion.

If not, bypass his choke/entrance with speedlings and ruin his mineral line (scv's, probes). It's important for you to be multitasking at this point. You need to kill off his workers while macro'ing inside your own base to keep your advantage.

In higher level play, you might want to sacrifice an overlord and dive it into his main base at around 20-30 supply to see what he is teching to.

Is there any reason for a terran NOT to wall off? It doesn't hurt him in any way economically and strength wise, and protects his base from any ground attack. So... why would a Terran player not build his supply/rax at his entrance?

It may not occur to some players that don't follow strategies, and some of the levels have very wide ramps that are hard to block off.

There's also this feeling that when you put your barracks/supplies near the ramp, you're making them vulnerable, even if there's really no difference. I know a couple people who found it hard to set up that way because it felt dangerous.

Actually there's a very good reason for not walling against Terran and Protoss. You generally always want to wall against Zerg, lest the open ramp be too tempting and he spam 'lings. However, all Terran units are ranged, so walling against them is basically always a no-no. Add to that the fact that reaper harass can really fuck you up if you aren't situated near your workers, so you can easily get marines to help them. Against Protoss, it's a little more of a gray area. Zealot rushes are really annoying, but you can outmicro them with marauders and marines. So yeah.

tl;dr: Only wall all the time against Zerg, and sometimes against Protoss. Never, against Terran.

Most of the top players I watch (streams at teamliquid) don't wall off, but then again they're pretty crazy with over 200 actions/minute clicking everywere and moving around so fast you get motionsickness

Walling off is very map and race dependant. I'm a diamond zerg/protoss player, and while i dont wall often with toss, I find that I can beat a terran who doesn't wall a lot more easily than one that does. If you are playing TvZ I suggest not walling with a depot unless you early scout and see that he hasn't taken a fast gas. When I scout a Depot wall playing as zerg I will baneling bust it 8/10 times, the other 2 would only be because I scout something else that could be scary like an early factory and the rax building a reactor.

That happened to me earlier: guy massed about 60 Zerglings and 40 or so Banelings and attacked, smashed through my wall and then rushed in.

Unfortunately for him, I lifted my buildings off of the ground whilst I Banshee/Viking raped his base.

    Fun times.

I am so... BAD at this game. My big problem is I cant seem to find the balance between economy and army. If I focus on economy, I get rapestomped by their initial rush, but if I focus on army, I never have enough resources. ._.

If the zerg makes roaches, spam marauders and autowin.

As a Zerg you need to be reactionary, always building so that the terran is forced to get a large diversity in his army and then steamroll him with ultralisks:p

Let me fix that for you.

There we go. HD and Husky might have some useful videos, but their casting is awful and has no substance (at least when they're together. Maybe they're better separate, somehow I doubt it). Day9 is always good, at least.

If you play Terran, check out Trump. He's a top player who really goes into good analysis throughout and after his games, and he never rages or loses his cool. It's very refreshing.

Wat. Husky and HD are awesome. They don't explain as much stuff as Day9tv but they're still good, atleast if you know the termonology

They explain virtually nothing. When they try, they're wrong half the time. They go off about how they've "never seen this before" when the player is playing standard.

    They're awful.

Just played a game where I Barrack pressured a Protoss player, first with Marines. Got beaten back, but I built up again and countered. Eventually, I had three Barracks cranking out Marauders and Marines left right and centre and thus, butchered his base. But, then he attacked my main. Lost my main base, he lost his, and he rebuilt at my old base, while I rebuilt at his expansion: we basically traded areas.

He tried to eliminate me with his Stalker force, but the Marauders I had mixed with Marines basically murdered him. Was a fun game, very nail biting.

Oh, and Marauders are rapidly becoming my fav' unit. :)

Don't get too used to them. The winds of change are a'blowin', and I foresee some Terran nerfs in the future. Even as a Terran player, I can acknowledge that they're really overpowered against Zerg. So I guess a Zerg buff is also feasible in the future.

I hope they nerf Marauders. They're the only unit I can really think of offhand that's legitimately overpowered.

Yeah, I've seen terran players mass about 14 Marauders before, and butcher god knows how many units in a heartbeat...even supposed 'counter units'...

Also, I've developed a love for Hellions and Reapers, too: I must of butchered about 6 Zealots with 3 Reapers, just by micro'ing 'em around, and a group of 4 Hellions with the Igniter upgrade can wreck an economy in about three seconds flat, if you move them around both sides of the main building.

One of the funniest games that I've played was where a Protoss player tried to Prism rush me. Fun times.
