Challenge #1:Harry Potter & The Cylon

    Summary:

All right, here's the challenge. a Harry Potter & Battlestar Galactica crossover.

How Harry get's to the 12 colonies is up to you, how he continues is up to you.

But he has to A) not have a problem with cylon's based on their species (what they've done he can hate) and B) he has to (unknowingly) convince both Cylon and 12 colonies that Earth is populated by super-people like himself or better... They don't have to _keep_ believing that of course.

He does have to survive the Holocaust if he arrives beforehand.

HP-verse magic works on the Centurions, they & the Cylons themselves are 'close enough' for the magic to work just like it would on a normal wizard or muggle. IE, a confundus would disorientate a centurion as it would a normal person, a full body bind would stop commands being sent to everything except the eye, etc etc.

That said.. No highly advanced magical versions that can destroy entire base-ships with a few spells.

How old HP is when he arrives is up to you, as long as he know's he has magic, he has a wand and he has some resource of continuing to learn some further spells (so your not forced into writing the same 4 spells used again and again.)

    Rules:
    A) Not 12 colonies arrive at earth for a minimum of 30k words.
    B) Unknowingly convince everyone (Cylons/Colonials) earthlings are all like him
    C) Magic works on 'humanoids'
    D) No super-magic wankery.
    E) If there is slash, it has to be with a character who is slash orientated in canon (for both series). It _must not_ be the focus of the story.
    F) Harry must find some ways of learning new magic, be it something that the twelve colonies once had (lost or not?) or something he brought with him.

If your curious, yes, I _am_ going to be writing a response to this, though I rarely post non-one-shots with less than 5k words so don't expect one for a couple of weeks.

    A very nice challenge.
I would be interested in this even though I have never watched battlestar galatica.

I want to see this. Hopefully the italics convey how much I want to see this. Battlestar Galactica is one of my favourite T.V. shows, and the time is ripe for an H.P. crossover methinks.

Just one addition: no post season 2 spoilers. I still haven't seen season 3!

Wow. I don't think there's ever been a HP/BSG-2003 crossover. It'd be a first of its kind. I didn't watch a lot of BSG, cause it was only shown in Australia for half a season or so before they booted in from Victoria. Still, I know enough of the plot to understand it

    Not a bad challenge

You can download the rest of the season's Shezza, it's what I've been doing. Although BSG is still airing in NSW, it's way too slow for me XD.

I've gotten a plotline for a first two chapters down. going to get that to about five and decide on where I want the story to go before I get to writing seriously.

lol. Okay, I want a definition for super-magic wankery. You know, so people can avoid it when necessary. ;)

    Interesting challenge.

I missed the most recent set of episodes so I've got some catching up to do.

by Super Magic wankery, I mean high level stuff such as protecting an entire ship by making in impervious to physical harm or something along the lines. It's fine if it's not affecting more than five people pretty much, after that your talking about chunks of infantry vanishing and getting a bit beyond demonstrated HP stuff.

Ah. My question was partially in jest but that was a very interesting answer.

By the usual definition, one could still have a 'Super!Harry' (magic animagus form, wandless magic, huge battle spell repertoire, etc.) in this challenge and still not be able to say... disillusion an entire battlestar or cast the Fidelius charm on a planet.

So spells that affect whole armies or planets, anything larger than a modest fighter or shuttlecraft = super-magic wankery.

A phoenix animagus form, wandless magic, mage-sight, etc. = mere super-magic jiggery pokery. ;)

In all seriousness though, I did find your answer intriguing. Chapter one of your take on the story was interesting as well. I thought Harry's observation that the spell he found seemed like something a muggle engineer would come up with, rather than the wizards he's familiar with was somewhat fascinating. When you think about it, it stands to reason that the wizards living amongst such a technologically advanced society would think and design their spells using methods that are more grounded in muggle science or, at the least, inspired by it.

Agreed. Harry's a wizard who's been raised by Muggles and has at least adopted a portion of their methods, Hermione mentioned in the first book that Wizard's didn't tend to have common sense or deductive ability (one or the the other, I forget).

Wizards from the Twelve Colonies have had a very long time with advanced technology right on their doorstep, they owe their very existance to that advanced technology (the flight from Kobol) and are completely incapable of assuming that the non-magical cannot be just as inventive and powerful as they are... although less so in smaller numbers.

This mean's they've been forced to acknowledge the 'Maddin' or Muggle race's equality (through more of a case of Numbers rather than individual though) and thus adapated portions of their society, Backpacks so they don't have unwieldy trunks, different methods of spell design, more advanced stealth techniques to protect from thermal, noise and electromagnetic and other assorted scanning technologies.
